Questions, answers and conversations

Yep, it depends on the instance. Not sure why other people are confidently answering “no.”

My fattening knows no season, only way too many carbs and servings of fatty meat.

McDoogles and Brogger Krog for mcds and burger king. Not sure why..

I really have to recommend the Retin-A. It helped me, my husband , our kids, my siblings, coworkers, I was so sure I’d go straight from acne to wrinkles, my skin was so bad and was reactionary, acne then adult acne then rosacea and reactions to every chemical sunscreen & no genetic advantage (my mom had bad skin) but that Tretinoin turned things around, I have such good skin now in my late 50s that people at work ask what my routine is. Yes multiple people. I do have a routine but sure 90% of my improvement came from Retin-A and finally finding sunscreens that didn’t cause irritation.

Mine even rang it’s bells at every half-hour and hour. So 12 loud bell rings at midnight. In my bedroom. I slept well.

Honestly I think it’s because I get used to the sound. If the ticking and ringing are always there, the brain just ignores them, even in sleep. For subjectively nice sounds (like those of a nice pendulum clock) at least.

I don’t have it running anymore, the weights would eventually hit the piano.

Interesting. For as long as I’ve been alive, it hasn’t been legal here (UK) for a brand to specifically name and disparage another brand in their advertising like that. (This doesn’t apply to political parties, for “reasons”, but I digress.)

That is, I’m not sure how it came to be in my head. I had thought I had come up with it independently, but I have to admit there’s a chance I’ve seen someone else use it over the intervening decades, and it has ultimately come from the advertising you’re quoting.

There’s a trucking company called Swift that gets a lot of flak for hiring inexperienced drivers. One of the nicer ones is So What I Failed Training. The rudest one I’ve heard ends with Toddlers, you can probably work out the rest, but you probably shouldn’t.

Sega started that. “Sega does what Nintendon’t.” Going back to the 80s. Maybe 90s.

I’d tell you what Pontiac stood for, if it was still the 1970s. It hasn’t been politically correct since then.

That is both awesome and the best acronym for GMC I’ve heard. The best one I’d previously hears was Get My Chequebook.

Dear Old Dad’s Garage Experiment is what we used to call Dodge back in the day.

Some friendlier ones. There was once an expensive camera brand called “Exakta” but Exakta owners affectionately called them “Approxima”.

I worked near a slightly fancy Chinese restaurant called Royal East but my coworkers (who went there often) liked to call it “Royal Eats”.

There was a nearby supermarket called Purity Supreme but people called it Poverty Supreme. That was waaaay before Whole Foods.

Amherst, Massachusetts was sometimes anagrammed to “Hamster”. I mean you could address letters that way and they’d get there.

Nintendon’t on account of their rabid intellectual property protection and litigious nature.

Works as both what they might say to would-be infringers as well as advice to avoid them. (Which people ignore because Zelda, Mario and childhood memories.)

I still call it reddit. It is already the name of a joke of a corporation.

Iirc, Maverick is/was its own chain. Maybe they got acquired. The name change seems like a good move.

Also, not to hail corporate too much, but the Maverick burritos are legitimately the best value meal for food to go in my area. About $7 for a big burrito that doesnt make me feel like shit, and that I can walk in the door and grab from under the heat lamp myself.

In our household McDonald’s is nearly universally McZargald’s, based on the Calvin and Hobbes strip. They’re not much good for anything except a reliable place to stop and take a leak when you’re on the hyperspace bypass anyway.

Similarly, I don’t think anyone in my circle has referred to that Baja Blast, chalupa, and fried chicken establishment as anything other than “Cluckin’ Bell” for several decades thanks to the early 3D GTA games.

Before they became Microslop, they were Micro$haft in the IT world. The double entendre is self explanatory.

YES! Simply host your own instance and you can not require an email from yourself.

I have a queer friend that calls his GMC Yukon his Gay Man’s Chariot. When we go places in it he usually initiates by saying something like “to the chariot”

could be worse. you could just not like how any treats you.

I do want to do it later. I prefer to clean in the morning. So I just go to bed and do in in the morning.

I don’t understand why people care so much about what other people look like.

I’ll never get it. But I don’t think I’ve ever met someone who didn’t like obsesses over their ‘look’ and go off about how other people are horrible for not looking they way think they should.

and I kind of lose all respect for people who go on their little rants about fashion, or teeth, or haircuts or any of that, especially when they like use it to boost their own ego how they don’t wear crocs or something, it’s so weird and petty and gross.

I believe they just rebranded as Mavericks. At least the ones around me did.

I think I’m generally pragmatic; it has been a benefit in my career.

I value pragmatism since it means that actual change that benefits people can be implemented over holding out for a perfection that may never come. That said, I’m willing to tolerate some tradeoffs because I will evaluate change against the system functioning as is and some people don’t like it if they don’t like the dysfunctional part but the cost of correcting it is worse.

Supergirl - solid. As usual, the outrage is bullshit.

Dust Bunny - fun, imaginative, good weird.

Slight spoiler for Dust Bunny

Bit disappointed that after they left the flat he doesn’t say he’s going to take her to live with him and his husband Will but there’s also no proof he didn’t do that.

With a name like that you could say they were screwed from the start.

There could be a whole thread just on the variations of that concept, but the most obvious for a gas station has to be “Pump and Dump”

That stew does sound rather plain. I’d add stuff like leeks and also just more vegetables of your choosing. A mirepoix, spinach, kale, peas, whatever vegetables you like. I’d also add some stock cubes. I don’t think ground meat makes very good stock, so it would benefit from stock cubes/powder. It’s just cheaper to bulk things out with vegetables and carbs.

As for making you feel full for longer, generally fat makes you feel full for longer, so you could try getting ground meat with higher % fat (sticking to your ingredients) or just adding maybe some olive oil or butter to the stew. It is extra calories which I guess might make you gain weight, but calories are energy and excess energy becomes fat (stored energy), so your two stated goals of not gaining weight and having enough energy are at odds—not irreconcilable, but it’d be a balancing act.

yeah no I haven’t even managed to lose my v-card or really even have a meaningful romantic relationship, about the closest I came was someone leading me on and playing mind games with me for a few months. 🙃

Given my success so far, it’s easy to extrapolate “when will I find the one?” to “probably never”.

It’s true. Message board are known to hallucinate content.

There’s a gas station chain called Kum & Go but it’s also referred to as Jizz and Jet or Ejaculate and Evacuate.

8th Gen was the last good one, and therefore the best one.

Looking at late 20s as old blows my mind. I looked at a genealogy site and so many of my ancestresses married in their late 20s. I was surprised by that but apparently it’s never been uncommon. My mom too, she married around age 30.

DuckDuckGo’s No AI version, but I haven’t really tried anything else, maybe that’s a show of it’s quality?

I never liked “dating” at all, my two long relationships grew from sexual hookups. Going out with someone with an intent to grow it just bothers me, how in the world can you know? Just have fun and something will stick.

Worst part is breakup or even worse, death. The end is the worst part, even if it’s gotten so bad you need it to end.

Don’t start with Euclid then, haha.

https://www.csis.org/analysis/right-wing-terrorism-threat-europe

21% Right wing deaths from total amount of people murdered in terror acts

2% for Left wing

I already know that is why I said something. The left is known for more property damage though.

Other interesting things

6.9% from ethno nationalists. In the US we would have to include this in right wing terrorism.

69.3% from Jihadists. Good Lord no wonder why their politicians are so anti-muslim.

Also perspective helps as overall the amount of terrorism has been very low for both all of Western Europe and the US excluding events like 9/11 for the last few decades.

I don’t have hearing damage or tinnitus (yet, please universe do not add that to the list) and there is no possibility of sleep for me in a quiet room. It is pure torture. A fan is heaven, rain is fucking sublime, a ticking clock I literally can’t even consciously hear unless I focus super hard on it.

True, this is why I said in two years start thinking about a PS6, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to spend $700 on a 6 year old console when $300 to $500 more can get a mid-range PC or for the similar price get a Steam Deck/Machine. If they get a PS5 today then it will still be relevant for another 5ish years, but will they have buyers remorse if they had just waited for a PS6, who knows.

If this was a few years ago, I would have said PS5. Sadly with the bad decision making of the company it’s hard to tell how they will be doing in a year from now. Because of that I say PC. I have both which started with me wanting a new pc and ps5 when ps5 first came out. At the time PC parts to build one were through the roof due to shortages and high prices for GPUs. I ended up getting the ps5 which was cheaper then than it is now. It was amazing and I like simplicity where it just plays games as easy as possible. These days with the price increase and uncertainty along with pc parts exceeding the power of the ps5 its harder to say ps5 anymore. I still love it, but I am very skeptical of the ps6 which would be the first system i may not buy since the ps1. Yeah I am old.

I suppose you could call my place a small farm.

We got 4 runner ducks that lay eggs like crazy and keep the bugs down for the garden.

Last year raised 10 turkeys for meat.

For fruit: Strawberries

Blueberries

Blackberries

Thimble berries

Salmonberries

Elderberries

Apples

Cherries

The garden:

Potatoes

Leeks

Peas

Green beans

Collard greens

Mustard greens

Kale

Brussels sprouts

Broccoli

Zucchini

Tomatoes

Sweet potatoes

Radishes

Beets

Didn’t have success with everything and most of those are still going.

I also harvest the stinging nettle that grows all over the property. There’s also crayfish in the creek on the property.

Ending its life cycle is not the same as end of life though. Were 6 years into ps5 life and the ps4 was just surpassed in more online people by the ps5 in June 2025. I have a feeling you will have little issue with it being abandoned anytime soon, let alone 2 or even 3 years from now.

Man, in the showerthoughts community I saw someone independently invent Roko’s Basilisk from the AI data center craze. They’re inventing the fucking verification can torment nexus.

It’s the rhythmic/repetitive pattern. It’s just another form of white noise.

Duck penises.

If you know, you know.

If you dont, it’s probably better off.

The main risk seems like it would be pranks. You can definitely buy other unpleasant odours for pranks, and if the point is to make people thing there’s an emergency, smoke would also work.

Get PC if you want more than gaming, need to do job or homework, connect with people, use internet, if you like indie games, if you like game mods, if you like play with electronics, if you like free online play, if you like friend slop games, if want to know how PC works, if you want to explore different operating systems other than windows, if you can’t afford 10-30% more expensive games.

Buy PS5 if you / your parents are at least middle class, can afford yearly subscription for online play, if you can afford games that are 10-30% more expensive then on PC, you are not into electronics and just want to play games, you have no money problems, you don’t need anything more than play games in next couple of years.

It’s your decision.

A handful of barley, rice or oats is a nice addition at the end of a soup. Leafy greensike spinach all chopped up are good at the end too. You wanna stop cooking them when they look more green.

You want a variety of vegetables in your food. Carrots, celery, turnips and all kinds of onions will make the food taste better and nourish you longer.

Here’s how to make soup, broken up into steps that can be done on different days:

Step 1: cook off your chicken. Take cheap cuts like skin on bone in leg quarters and bake them until they’re almost done. In the us you can get big bag for ~.50 cents a pound. When they’re almost cooked, pull em out of the oven and put them in the fridge for later.

Step 2: make stock. Sometime later, debone and remove the skin from your cooked chicken. Save the bones and skin. Take all the vegetables you’re gonna put in the soup and prepare them completely, peeling and slicing onions, carrots etc and slicing ends off celery. Save all that stuff except for potato and turnip parts. Those can go in compost or trash.

It’s easiest if you have an electric pressure cooker like an instant pot for this, but you can do it longer on stovetop if you need. Boil all the vegetable stuff and chicken bones and skin for about an hour and a half in the instant pot or stovetop. If you use the pressure cooker you’ll have rich flavorful broth, if you do stovetop you may need to wait longer for it to get good.

Strain everything out and save the stock.

Step 3: make soup. Start with a roux by melting butter then adding an equal amount of flour and whisking it together. Let it cook while you keep it whisking till it’s as brown as you like and then add your vegetables for a few minutes then stock and chicken. Salt, pepper and herbs can be added at this point and once everything is cooked you can put the handful of grains and chopped up greens in.

every year I get a little older, a little more damaged, and a little less desirable; and the age bracket of people I’d be interested in get more baggage of their own and have more expectations of a potential partner. I’m in my late 20s living with family, and nobody really wants to date me already; I can’t fathom that will improve any in the future being a 30-something living with family (as I will likely still be too poor to leave).

Probably gonna die alone. Can’t wait, this place sucks anyhow.

Hmm. I wonder if they all got it on the same trip, or at least in the same spot.

I use the house strategy every time I play; buy as many houses as I can and never upgrade to hotels. It works great and usually I’ll win.

So while I’m seeing everyone list the pros of getting a PC, I’d like to give a helpful comment on BOTH the pros and cons of a PS5.

Lets start with the pros: For actual reasons to get a PS5 over an Xbox series X or S, is mainly for the ecosystem. Whether it be you have a bunch of PS4 games, all your friends bought PS5’s so that’s where they’re playing, or you like PS exclusives, the PS5 is built for playing PlayStation games. And if your upgrading from a PS4, there is a large difference with games looking better, running smoother, and less load times. (Biggest example, opening any media app on PS4 is marginally slow, but opening Netflix or YouTube on PS5 is just as fast as opening the games) So if your looking to upgrade from a PS4, a PS5 is pretty nice. If not, then it’s really your choice between dealing with Sony or Microsoft, because either way you’ll be getting a modern console.

Now as for the cons to a PS5: The biggest one is that the console industry is enshittifying. I’m sure you’ve heard of Sony wanting to discontinue physical games, so that right there means you’ll be limited to download codes and the PS store. And Sony doesn’t exactly have the best track record of upholding your purchases, as they removed movies from people’s library when those licenses timed out, and will probably do the same to games when those licenses time out. And while we’re on the topic of licenses, certain games downloaded off the PS store get locked if the PS5 isn’t connected to PSN for a certain amount of time. Essentially, you’re gonna have to be ok with the fact that you don’t own or control many of your games anymore.

As for regular cons to a PS5, its a pretty much what everyone else is saying. Online multiplayer is gonna cost you (free games like Fortnite and Apex won’t charge you, but paid AAA games like COD and GTA online definitely will). It’s technically close to the end of its lifespan, as Sony has announced plans for a PS6 coming soon. Its a very bulky console if I’m being honest too.

PS exlcusives are good, but, have there been any PS5 games that make you WANT a ps5? I’ve had it for its whole lifespan, and it kind of just feels like PS4.5. But now I’m getting into the actual games and that’s your call

To end on a personal note, I built a PC while having a PS5, and I still prefer the PS5 cuz I’m not confident in the rig I built being stable or good enough to play the games I want. And I’m technically my family’s IT, so the fact that I’m not comfortable moving over to PC makes me confident in saying that a console will run how you expect, while a PC will run to your knowledge on computers. (Not saying that a PC is this large challenging hurdle you have to jump over, but the first thing my older brother did upon finding out I had a PC was play happy wheels on it. Suffice to say, you’ll want to do some research if you want a PC to be on par with a PS5, or better)

there’s only a few options that you have available to you then.

  1. block people as they call themselves out
  2. only visit women only communities that are heavily moderated
  3. leave the internet

there’s people that think differently than I do, that’s ok. I accept that I’ll never have a 0% chance of interacting with them and just have to cope with it when it does happen. it’s not unfair, that’s just life.

My wife took me to see Spiderman for date night. Time well spent for multiple reasons. It reminded me that Disney/Marvel are still capable of making good movies.

I go through phases of eating different fruits for a few weeks at a time. Once during an apple phase, I brought a couple to work and gave one to a coworker, who then absolutely demolished it. He came back and said it’s like his body needed it.

Okay so hear me out. If you like Warhammer or just a British man reading softly try this out.

https://youtu.be/2BxDn1qFgKU

I know he’s branded it as ASMR, but as he says in the video, he just reads some codices in a soft voice.

He also has a channel about painting old 40k models, if that’s your thing.

(I am not the guy in the vids, nor am I sponsored in any way haha. I just really like them for sleeping)

There’s also a number of dark souls/Warhammer lore videos I like that to fall asleep to of you’re interested.

mmmm. I mean its pragmatic to use something if it meets your needs and not buy a new one that does not increase your productivity or something enough in relation to its costs.

this feels like I work. I am generally liberal/left politically but im conservative in my basic life. Well financial wise and real conservative not fake bs. I dress as I please and do what I want and such though I compromise for work or occasions or whatever. I am increasingly unwilling to compromise with how I dress and behave though with whats going on in the world. sorta eff it thing.

does it use staan in every country (unlike qwant and ecosia, for now)?

cus those search results seem quite good, maybe even better than qwant (which i use)

if this is what staan is like, i’m very much hyped for the rollout for qwant and ecosia :)

I built a PC last November. Got two 8GB sticks of second hand DDR5 SODIMM for 50 bucks. The SODIMM to DIMM adapters were like 30€ for 4 iirc. It runs perfectly fine (Minecraft VR, Cyberpunk, RDR2) and I’m sure I can wait out the current memory prices before I need to upgrade.

Hard to pick between 6th and 7th for me. Born in the 5th, raised during the 6th, and went online for the first time with the 7th. The only one of that bunch I never got was a PS3.

I’m not talking about property damage, I’m talking about terrorism where people die. Maybe look into the RAF, for example?

IMO stew should be a small amount of (cheap) meat, stock, and lots of veggies.

Where I’m at they sell backs of stew vegetables for cheap: carrots, onion, turnip, cabbage. I think if you put all of those things in you have a pretty nutritious meal.

In terms of making it taste good, garlic and bay leaves help.

I’m a pragmatic idealist. I want things to be better, and I fight for them to be better, but also I live in the real world, not the world I want to see built.

  1. No, you can’t. The rules state that you need to upgrade all of your properties in a given color at the same rate. For instance, if one of your green properties has two houses while the rest have three, you have to upgrade the lowest one before you upgrade the rest. Additionally, the rules specifically state that you must have four houses before upgrading to a hotel. Your post is a great example of one of the bad house rules I originally mentioned.

I’ve just been doing it because alliums taste good. So in that sense you have been cooking wrong.

A lot of how I feel is normal and I don’t have to belittle myself for feeling how I do.

Sure, but last time I bought a bread in Vancouver I had the option to tip 18, 20, or 25%, or nothing

So I click nothing and deal with the looks. I’m sorry, not sorry, tipping is just abusive
