There are people who can sleep with the sound of a loud ticking clock.

It seems incomprehensible to me how some people tolerate it.

There are people to whom sleeping in a completely silent room is equally incomprehensible.
I have pretty hefty hearing damage. Am I supposed to turn everything off and listen to nothing but “EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE” all night?
same, but it is really subtle for me, but that makes it all the more unbearable when it is completely silent, bcs it is noticable enough to make me focus on it and it just fucking sucks bcs i want my brain to just shut down.
that’s why i just have music running while i sleep, and it reduced the time i needed to fall asleep by a lot.
I have been able to use my tinnitus as a focus point during meditation.
Letting it be a reminder to practice being mindful is a superpower.
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee is my friend, Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee is always there for me.
I don’t have hearing damage or tinnitus (yet, please universe do not add that to the list) and there is no possibility of sleep for me in a quiet room. It is pure torture. A fan is heaven, rain is fucking sublime, a ticking clock I literally can’t even consciously hear unless I focus super hard on it.
Everybody keeps saying tinnitus sounds like “eeeeee” and none of my tinnituses (I have three layers) do. The examples you can find online are also always wrong.
Paradoxically I have tinnitus too, and I can lean into it.
Mine is loud and debilitating enough that I’ve sought medical attention and have a partial disability rating. There’s no “leaning into it”.
My condolences.
I’d say my tinnitus is mild, my hearing is otherwise still sharp for my age.
I treat my tinnitus how others might use a white noise machine.
Yeah, unfortunately a career in the military with explosives going off by your head does a number on those sensitive little hairs in your ear canals. Already looking at hearing aids at 45.
Have you considered insanity? I’ve heard it’s nice this time of year.
WAY ahead of you on that front, unfederated friend.
You can sleep without one?
How dare you try to trick me into believing anyone could not only tolerate the sound, but actually enjoy it.
I grew up around them, so my brain tuned ticking clocks out. Certainly I’ve lost that ability since then but I haven’t encountered a bedroom with a ticking clock in a long time.
Would the sound of a dripping tap be innocuous?
The clock works as intended and ticks in predictable intervals. It’s much the same as rain whipping against a window or a old house groaning during storm.
The faucet dripping means something is wrong and will annoy me to no end. It’s much the same as a buzzing fly or screaming/panicking children.
In other words: you can’t really compare those two.
Interesting.
I can tolerate non repetitive sounds, like rain, or wind, or the house settling.
Reliably consistent sounds do my head in.
Clocks, dripping taps, fan clicks - all invented by the devil
Proverbs 27:15?
Provably
My grandparents had a large mechanical clock in their living room, where we would sleep on the floor when visiting as kids. The right “tick” would be nostalgic. I might go look for some ambient noise tracks with clock ticks…
Literally curated tick tocks. I’m in.
It takes
…a lot, to make a stew?
Ohhh, that song… Good thing I’m listening to something else right now. 😐
What do I care how loud it is? I’ll be asleep. Things like that only bother me when I’m awake.
Are youre one-a-dem peoples with what’s got that sleep on command doo-hickeys or what?
It’s staying awake that takes effort, for me.
I have trouble staying awake and going to sleep
I’m so sorry
It’s the rhythmic/repetitive pattern. It’s just another form of white noise.
For me it comes down to repetition. Repetitive consistent sounds I can ignore. Random sounds though keep me up.
I’m trying to think of a time a noise was distrupting my sleep and only example I can think of is waves hitting the boat hull. It’s quite irregular sound which is why it bothers me. Music, talking, fan, road noise or such doesn’t effect me at all.
I don’t know how people sleep with all the blinding blue LEDs so many electronics emit at all times.
Mine even rang it’s bells at every half-hour and hour. So 12 loud bell rings at midnight. In my bedroom. I slept well.
Honestly I think it’s because I get used to the sound. If the ticking and ringing are always there, the brain just ignores them, even in sleep. For subjectively nice sounds (like those of a nice pendulum clock) at least.
I don’t have it running anymore, the weights would eventually hit the piano.
I’m so ADD that I intently listen until I forget and get distracted by some other thought. I also can fall asleep fast after hitting the pillow so there isn’t much time to linger on it.
