Comics and art

It’s all about your current situation. For a lot of people 50k could be what they need to get out of an immediate bad spot that could start to spiral (credit card debt etc.), and give them the needed breathing room to stabilise their situation.

For my own part, I would probably just dump the 50k directly into my mortgage in order to reduce my recurring expenses a bit. It would make me live a bit more comfortably, but wouldn’t be life changing in any way. In other words, I would probably flip the coin. However, I can definitely understand why someone else would choose differently.

fn look_at_sunset() {
    loop {
        make_paper_clip();
    }
}

You shouldn’t and cannot separate the art from the artist. That’s not how art works.

1T turns into 20T pretty quickly if you know what you’re doing honestly.

Marginal value of money at 10T is almost zero.

He is going to mention himself a few times.

The whole beginning is autobiographical. It’s more than just a few times

If it’s 50k untaxed, now we’re talking. It’s not like a 50k bonus for one year, where you only see a portion of it.

I think this question is more a mirror of your current life situation. A lot of people would take the 50k, and I don’t blame them. That money might get them out of a doom poverty spiral — they can fix their car, pay off credit card debt, etc…

Personally; I’m retired, earn almost nothing, but also spend almost nothing. I’d go for the coin flip, and if I win, give it to my family or charity or something.

That’s funny. All one has to do is move out of one of these crappy western countries with all their social issues and corrupt governments, skip the 10M, and understand a decent living standard isn’t about quantifiable material conditions. Even 50k would be life changing in most of those places.

The set of things I can do with 20T but not 1T is very small

Yes, in financial theory it’s called a “utility function”. Log functions are frequently used to represent risk averse patterns.

The one who whispers with the cube.

Yeah, it’s obviously logarithmic or something. There is diminishing value in money. I think the way you put it makes it very intuitive though.

I understand the justification but just don’t think it holds in 2026 unless you’re in a worse position than even paycheck-to-paycheck. 50% is solid odds for that reward, there’s a difference of two orders of magnitude, those two orders of magnitude are actually meaningful, and $50,000 in 2026 money is “tread water a little more comfortably for a while” money while $10 million – 200x more – is still “invest and go do whatever you want” money.

Yeah, the ratio of this dilemma is an interesting one. If it was a guaranteed 5 million or even 500k, I’d damn well take the guaranteed option. I also hate leaving things to chance. Even as a fraction of the 10 million, either of those would be life changing.

But for 50k, I’m not so sure. It’d help iron out a few immediate financial wrinkles, but it wouldn’t change anything I’m doing today. I’d still be going to work, still keeping my expenses the same, and keeping my living situation as-is. So it wouldn’t ruin me to have 50k less to spend, I just wouldn’t be able to pay off loans or accrue savings as quickly without it.

And then I think that if I were to take the guaranteed sum, I’d end up lying awake at night wondering what could have been if I’d gone with the 10 million and won the coin toss. That might end up eating me up inside.

The off brand one I had didn’t even have the same colours, let alone on the right sides.

This is so wrong - they build NESTS. They find holes in trees, and they build nests. They don’t make the holes. They enter the holes and makes nests.

The translation would be:

You found this place to build a nest?

Yes.

50k could be life changing for a lot of people. That could pay for a decent chunk of education/training, be used to start a business, or cover a deposit for a home. All major steps up for those currently struggling.

I remember as a kid one ball pit had a cleaning station and the kids (myself included) worked as a team to feed the machine and watch it work. The water in that thing was filthy. But we kids yearned for the mines and sunk that energy into doing free work for the play place.

Wouldn’t somebody get angry at him for loosing their money to him?

That one is actually very hard and not a simple no brainer. 50k is good but not live changing much. 10M would completely change the live, even allow one to never work again and still have a decent living standard.

I have a Nintendo ten billions barrel. It once was in a solved state, then one day an aunt tried to show me how it’s done… I am not good with puzzles, but I am good with not talking to that aunt anymore (for mostly unrelated reasons)

I’d 100% take the guaranteed 50k. 50k would help me enough that I’m not willing to risk the 50% nothing.

I learnt how to solve the classic 3x3, then a 4x4, then a 2x2, and a 5x5, and a 7x7.

Now I use then as essentially fidget toys.

Wait, what? That seems so trivial. As a sanity check (and assuming I’m reading this right): unless you’re utterly destitute or you’re ground floor on some insane, foolproof investment opportunity but have no spare capital, you literally always go for the expected $5 million, right?

You can still reason about expected value in this situation, just $ is not really what you want to optimize for.

When you view it as “100% chance of being able to afford anything” vs “50% chance of being able to afford anything” it becomes more clear.

Who tf just bites into dark chocolate like that? It’s supposed to be savoured one cube at a time.

I’ve attempted to read it. It’s not good. Like not even just talking about the subject matter. It really is just poorly laid out in poorly written. I only managed to make it about a quarter of the way through before I had to set it down because it was just giving me a headache.

The modern version is you twist one edge half way and push up on the exposed corner. The corner popps out, then you take every piece apart and re-assemble correctly.

Imo in any situation where you are choosing risk/reward preferences it’s important to consider how much different levels of reward will actually benefit your life. I think in most cases losing everything you own is going to be more bad than doubling your wealth is good, and so it’s a bad idea to only consider the alpha of an investment. Or it could be the other way around, maybe someone desperately needs to escape their shitty job, so for them a very risky investment that actually has lower effective value than the safe investment is the more rational choice.

Which isn’t to say discount EV entirely, that’s how you end up at bad decisions like buying a lottery ticket.

Wraps back around to being possible if you are completely blind though.

Tap for spoiler

/s or /j not sure what suits this best, but not serious

Risk intolerance is logical. EV modeling does not take that into account, which is the joke here.

It’s really hard when one is colorblind

This would apply to any situation where the lower value is sufficiently “enough” and the odds are better. Once you cross the threshold of enough, taking worse odds for more is nonsensical.

I feel like it is usually logical though lol. This is kinda the one situation where it’s not because you don’t really need more than 10 million anyway.

Unless you really wanted that button.

Sometimes you can tell Zach is very active on Bluesky – they’ve been yelling at each other about a study where people were offering $50k vs a 50% chance at $10m that I am very grateful hasn’t been getting play on fedi.

edit: what have I done

edit 2: to be fair they are actually fighting over $50k vs $1m and I just have a terrible memory

I want to clarify that I’m straight up accepting the physiology and, separately, wanted to spread the bat explanation!

I took the time to learn how to solve a rubix cube a few years ago. It’s actually surprisingly easy. You can learn in less then an hour and then just a bit of repetition.

It’s fun to show off to young nieces and nephews. I like to say “ok mix it up REALLY good this time” and “ooooh nooo, this is really mixed up, I don’t know if I can do this one!”

Man, I played through this once. What an experience…

My partner worked in library services for a few years, this made us laugh

Everything is possible with unofficial manufacturers

Thanks man! I’ve made a ton of drawings. All my social media links are in my profile.

dAaaamn dood what other drawings you made?

It won’t be a stylish marriage,
I can’t afford the carriage

This is on par with the cubes that you used to be able to pop the individual squares out and connect them in whatever order you want.

Oooh I probably misinterpreted. I read it as if they were insisting that’s how the “old” cube was and the new cubes should be.

I’ve seen a lot of people upload it to catbox for better quality not sure if that helps. Some people just upload it multiple times from multiple sources too.

There’s the Japanese color scheme and the western color scheme, which have blue and yellow switched

You would hope so but some of us are SO stupid man. I had an HR guy tell a bunch of people my salary and give me so much shit because he was mad at the rate someone hired me on for. It started a pile-on because there were a lot of people there who shared his sentiments

In the United States, discussing pay is a law protected right.

Co-workers don’t get pissed at you because you make more for the same job. They get pissed at the company because they are paying them less.

You SHOULD be sharing your salary with your co-workers if you want to ensure everyone has equal pay.

The machine has no feelings, this is just to show us the character has humanity still.

I’m just saying I could do it with two. One-and-a-half in a pinch.

Maybe the kid just repainted it and didn’t know. So next level cheating.

He actually did do a whole series in this realm. Maybe I’ll post more of them. All his comics are very surreal

Is that not exactly what they just said? White and yellow opposite, Green and Blue opposite

This is one of those that I didn’t understand, at all. Fortunately there are explanations in the comments.

Wait what did I miss? I bought 2 cubes (official Rubik’s cubes) last year and both of them have W/Y G/B O/R opposites

I could get behind this being a whole series

Nah fuck that. Machines have no feelings so I won’t spare any of mine.

US is the only country that i know of that institutionally deny climate change because the Republican party, with their corporate donors, is still considered a viable political party by Americans. And they won’t do such a thing if there aren’t enough people who don’t believe in climate change.

May wanna edit to.

It bothers me that the new cube isn’t possible… White and Yellow are always opposite. And Blue and Green are opposites.

For me it was “School days…. School days…. Good old….. Golden… Rule…….”

Ooh, yeah good point. Government jobs your pay is posted on the internet

There are protections in law for keeping that private

I’m sure there are cases where this is true, but certainly not globally applicable.

My salary is public record. My employer receives some government funding and there’s a state law about transparency for salaries for government funded positions.

A rose by any other chosen name would smell as sweet

Bro should have read that script first. Clanker probably just called down an orbital strike.

I comprehend follows are not endorsements, but her opinions on her podcasts are 🫳.
I can rescind my edit if she claims she doesn’t support MAGA.
So far her silence speaks louder.

Wait, I’m uninformed. Can somebody fill me in on who that is and what happened?

sluggo is such a piece of shit.

get a fucking job! there’s plenty of 8 year olds working in the factories!

Ughh no you don’t. There are protections in law for keeping that private but people don’t follow them. And there’s discussing your salary out of solidarity then there’s not discussing it because the gap is so wide and your coworkers are so unstable that you know they’re going to chimp the fuck out on you if they know

I am not better than to deny any ckanker any final request, so you know it ain’t a comic about me.
