Ocean is too tired to hold in extra Co2, and far too blue and not white anymore where it matters either.
Ugh. I’m so sorry and angry every time I think on this…
…Full surveillance state. I do believe there is some end game these tech…on the horizon…matter of them making it come to fruition before reality crashes down on their heads…
We should bankrupt them faster because it’s what they deserve, and the progress needs to be slowed at all costs.
But the reasons why all this is unfolding? Very clear to see, and you even referenced them without really pausing to consider.
Fascism isn’t stupider this time around (in so far as being beyond the already astronomical stupidity required to believe it’s a solution to fucking anything).
It’s desperate. They didn’t pivot away from their little spaceship dreams and into AI because it’s more profitable. They don’t care to come ahead in an economically sound world.
I’m sorry. Time has ran out on the climate and our biosphere, as far as them retaining the properties that allowed us the ‘Modern World’.
There is no longer an avenue that averts widespread desolation, and they’ve known it all along because they don’t actually all ignore scientific consensus, they just pay for the masses to ignore it.
It’s going to be a gnarly and awful time, but humans aren’t wired to just give up and die.
Hence the total surveillance state. Hence the mass casual cruelty with mass deaths. Hence the persecution of anyone who might oppose or see through it.
The world as we know it will be reduced to ashes, in our lifetimes, and we’ll have to scramble to do whatever our species will do just to barely persist in some form, as that is just what we do.
They dream of a techno feudalist dreamscape where each little Dragon has their manageable fiefdom composed of a diminished and controllable populace to continue to carry out their self-aggrandizing whims. They can burn all of the economy now, because they’re trying to trade it for straight power.
Joke’s on them, they’ll die by the masses too, and those that don’t, will die by the masses. It’s not that hard for thousands of angry and with nothing to lose people to go after them.
Their dream of Autonomous Weapon guardians is as laughable as the rest of the stupidity they’ve attempted and failed at throughout the years: It will be as imperfect a solution to what they’re attempting as anything else they’ve ever done.
But we collectively let them have control of the playground while it was fresh and clean, so now we gotta deal with their bullshit king of the hill fantasies and the results of their evil stupidity.
I guess it’s the same thing that makes some people freeze up when they see any math problem, and just assume it isn’t something they can handle. 😃
It is absolutely this, in my opinion, and for the same reason as Maths. It pretty much applies to any and all specializations that intersect in our average lives.
A reasonable person might read a medical journal describing the exact set of symptoms they’re facing, but being reasonable, they rightfully acknowledge they lack the expertise required to utilize that information and apply it, so they seek a professional.
Another human being who they have been conditioned to believe has dedicated a special amount of effort (and often also characterized as possessing extraordinary traits that allowed/empowered said special effort to work for them in this arena) to the pursuit of mastery in a discipline that they themselves believe they do not have the inclination/ability/time to achieve.
I.e. They go to see a Doctor.
This is the pattern, and for something like medicine, it is both very true, very apt, and very neat and straightforward: Not everyone has the baseline capacity/capital/time/what-have-you to get through Medical school.
Now extrapolate that to “advanced mathematics”, and it remains largely true. It does take a very discrete set of parameters to produce a master Mathematician that not everyone has.
But the pattern starts to break down the more granular you get. Not all specializations are created equal, the world has changed, and many aspects of complicated disciplines have ever increasingly intertwined with our daily lives.
Mathematics still works for the next example, but it’s time to get back to coding and error messages.
Computer Programming can be a vast and deep discipline, and has a lot of the same baggage as Medicine.
Especially in the minds of those who were born and experienced significant portions of their lives before computing made up more of our lives, and those who were born after computing was commodified down to interfaces that do not require all that expertise.
That leaves us with people, who are stuck interacting in/with systems they conditioned to believe would be beyond them to understand, and they always need an expert.
The joke of course, is that we’re all humans within the same capacity bands, and there’s as much room between complete ignorance and adept usage, as there is between adept usage, and total mastery.
But most don’t dare take that step out of ignorance, they don’t think they can be Masters, so what’s the point of just being Adept, and that’s assuming they even know or believe adepthood is possible.
So instead of reading the error message and thinking back to their interactions with the system and trying to fashion some sort of working model…
They just ping the computer guy.
It’s worse than that. She had a mental health crisis and what the article terms a “street incident”. The article makes it clear that she was in crisis, visibly, and faced a strong language barrier.
So what happened to her? Not a hospital. Not care. She was put in a county jail. For SIX MONTHS.
THEN comes ICE. She’s already spent six months in a confusing hellscape where even the cruelty is as ad-hoc and unstructured as everything else besides the actual routines of confinement.
Six. Fucking. Months.
After ICE did what they did…she didn’t even wander. She was so broken, confused and lost that she just treated it as a continuation of her confinement:
Surveillance camera images show Michel at the bus shelter on Pittsburgh’s south side, sitting on the bench in daylight at first on 1 March, with a small, pale bag of belongings, still sitting there in darkness that evening, then slumped half upright on the ground and eventually lying on the ground the following morning.
She didn’t even move from that spot. A human being in need of help, and they might as well have driven her and thrown in her a dumpster, it would have had the same effect.
ICE is only one piece of the course corrections required and very important, but the system practically killed her six months before they did the actual murder.
There’s more than a couple of chuds in an SUV to just.
Wait…
They (TR) definitely were involved in the “creation” of Ditto. In the pursuit of Mew. Who already “was” every Pokemon, in a sense. But you don’t start that sort of research from scratch.
You pick a likely candidate for trials that has whatever traits you’re looking for.
How does a Team Rocket experiment get a lower number?
If they did something to #132 that led to not just a lab specimen Ditto…but altered all instances of #132 in the wild also.
Dear Arceus…they genocided #132 and rewrote the children’s history books. The monsters.

Know what else causes a loss of effective action and leads to a reversion to performative activism?
Making good points badly, to such a degree that your (presumably personally and deeply held beliefs) come across as the inverse of your intention.
Because neither the erosion of effective action nor the rise of performative activism, occurs in a vacuum.
In fact, both play into the hands of those who benefit from said erosions, and who have guided the communual discourse in such a way that even the very act of discussion in regards to the topics most important to the themes at hand, is apt to fracture into a mixture of ineffective action, which itself can only come across as “performative activism” to those approaching the very same problems, from a different angle.
Like, are you even aware of how poignant your gun violence example is, how your approach can easily be misconstrued as the same performative activism (an angry, contrarian, lone wolf call to sanity online is practically a trope at this point)?
They’re winning, because nuance cannot be shouted, it must be demonstrated.
Goddammit, fine. I will go to the next reunion, and I will bring chicken for the lads, for old time’s sake.
The way I thought it all shaked down (and what I thought was established fan canon long ago), was that the Cinnerbar Mansion experiments were an attempt to clone Mew.
Ditto was one of the first failures (and I bet the poor guys have it worse than no thoughts of their own, but rather their very thoughts are constantly trapped fighting shifting self-identity, if we want to go Grim Dark lol)
And they never got to perfect a Mew, because the next stage in the experiment precluded that.
That they achieved Mewtwo, after Ditto, and the scope of the project rapidly changed when the “benefactor” (sue me, there’s still kids picking up the games, I ain’t spoiling it, but we know who we’re talking about) bankrolling the project got the initial “power level readings”.
So they pumped Mewtwo, their perfect IV monstrosity, with both forced and artificial EVs, until what happened, happened, and Mewtwo had to go hang out in that cave to get some peace.
Meanwhile the Dittos suffer ;(
You know what else Reddit used to have? More comments like yours. You got it all nailed down in your observations. With intent, thought, and personality.
Same way you wrote a ridiculous yet thoroughly engaging “Elden Ring Journal” here on Lemmy (made my night lol).
That capacity for real people to have both the spaces and freedom to display themselves, whether that was them at their most intent focused in one community, or them at their most relaxed and silly in another, was one of the meta-qualities that their system didn’t intend by design but which became hands down the emergent quality that allowed them to even get to being what they became post 2005 and pre-July 1, 2023.
The moment they started doing all the fuckery you rightly noted, they killed the conditions in which that emergent property could thrive.
Reddit doesn’t just no longer feel the same because the system’s changed, but because the changes were done with no regards for what it did to the organization’s spirit, which for a web related property, has always been something defined by its users, and not the creators, all the way back to the first BBS.
I am one of the 90%. I have lurked in online spaces before and since Reddit, watching, and only occasionally sharing any thoughts.
Not because I’m antisocial (ok, maybe a little bit), but because there was always enough spirit to absorb, enough humanity to just bask in the display of shared thoughts between other people, that enough satisfaction was derived just reading, nodding along, and whispering opinions I had no intention to post.
That spirit, that humanity, is utterly dead in Reddit (and most of social media these days), and it behooves us all who care to not see it forever gone, to not see it driven away completely in the face of a dead Internet, to do something about it.
I guess I need to post more on Lemmy until I can return to invisibility, ugh.
Anyhow, great “rant”, greater comments, and even greater silly posting, @Abyssian@lemmy.world, thank you for your time and thoughts!
I don’t know how well that would work. The worst of these fucks seem to act with some sort of freakish resistance to acknowledging the natural world.
I don’t mean that in some green washy climate related way (though that would have been nice, oh, 60 years ago), I mean they literally seem to resist acknowledging the actual physical state of reality as put before them.
I used to be a full blown atheist, but goddamn if I’m not starting to wonder if the Gnostics aren’t on to something.
You entirely sidestepped the scenario and issue. In the example given, the copyrighted work is being produced directly onto a medium that obfuscates its provenance, literally. Yet, gives an opening for another to publish it in such a way, that they could claim it’s their copyrighted work. They would be lying, and they would be wrong, but then you would have to prove to a body composed of ancient mummies who uphold an ancient code, why one of the few ways they thought they understood technology and codified into their verification process, isn’t actually showing them the truth this time. Do you know how to defend a copyright claim?
Other poster isn’t being difficult, facetious, or provocative, btw. The scumbags have already done exactly that, in other US states, already. Often. The articles are all over Lemmy.
