Before that it was Monty Python.

We had to have a rule at the D&D table. NO PYTHON REFERENCES! One ‘Im not quite dead.’ or a ‘Get on with it!’ quip and we’d lose an entire session to Holy Grail jokes.

My third place needs this as a rule for Mel Brooks. Drop a spaceballs or men in tights line in that place and the entire shop stops and waits for people to finish the scene.

Dont forget Princess Bride

Aaaaaaaaaaas yooooooooouuuuuuu wiiiiiiiiiiiiiishhhhhhhh

Wove, true wove, is what bwings us togewa!

I’m not a witch, I’m your WIFE!

And 60% of the time, it worked all of the time.

It smells like big foots dick!

That’s how you know it’s working.

real bits of panther!

It’s illegal in 6 countries

That doesn’t make sense.

Boy, that escalated quickly!

Brick killed a guy!

I love lamp.

Lanolin? Like sheep’s wool?

There were horses, and a man on fire, and I killed a guy with a Trident! 🔱 🔱

Brick, I’ve been meaning to talk to you about that. You should find yourself a safe house or a relative close by. Lay low for a while, because you’re probably wanted for murder.

Related: Anybody else annoyed how you can’t just tell jokes anymore? These days every time you try to tell a joke you heard before everyone just seems to yell about how you took the joke from somewhere or someone. It’s like they expect every joke told to be 100% Original Content Donut Steel.

I’m very important. I have many leather-bound books, and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Yeah, it’s really weird. Sure if you’re a comedian doing stand up, you should come up with original material. But if you’re just drinking some beers and having some laughs, why would anyone care?

Anchorman came out in 2004, internet memes have existed way before that

Cut OOP some slack. This was posted befkre chronology was invented

Yeah, they existed, but they weren’t mainstream and were mostly just simple image macros. In 2004, if you talked about memes in public, it meant you browsed 4 Chan or Something Awful, which made you a loser to most people.

We also didn’t carry computers in our pockets at the time.

Replace that with Montey Python and you’d be correct. There were memes around when Anchorman came out.

We had memes before anchorman…

An in fact, that itself is a meme. Memes aren’t just pictures on the internet.

The term itself comes from the 70s.

Sokath, his eyes open!

Family Guy is another one you can toss in the mix. Futurama, Simpsons, SeaLab 2021, Space Ghost.

Lots “I know the thing” memes.

Although I despise that I have to sit through my generation shoehorning The Office and Ron Swanson into EVERY conversation they can…

Big Trouble in Little China and The Last Dragon got a lot of air time for us too. Throw in The Blues Brothers ‘we’re on a mission from God’ as an honorable mention.

It’s all in the reflexes.

I’m more of a Spaceballs asshole myself.

Or if you’re really old and nerdy, Monty Python.

I wouldn’t have even been mad, that’s impressive

You know I don’t speak Spanish; in English please!

Go fuck yourself, San Diego.

I don’t believe you

Pretty much any quotable movie, really. Monty Python, Airplane, Star Wars…

It was a more civilized age. Before the dark times. Before the social media.

Shirley you must be joking.

I am joking, and don’t call me, surely.

I’m Roy Burgundy?

When I was younger it was Jeff Dunham lol

Buddy, you just described what a meme is.

Isn’t that precisely what a meme is?

According to its technical definition, yes, a meme is an idea that transmits from person to person. According to its colloquial definition, no, when most people use the term “meme”, they’re referring to a screenshot. In the 2000s, though, it mostly referred specifically to image macros.

It was The Chapelle Show for our cohort.

I used to do this but then my friends pooped in the refrigerator and ate a whole wheel of cheese.

I’m bliiiiind!

Boy, that deescalated quickly.
