When things go really wrong they go really really wrong, but that doesn’t change the statistical risk. Radiation is viscerally scary because you can’t see it, but you’re way more likely to get hit by a bus or die in a cloud of anhydrous ammonia or something similarly nasty.
Plus things have only gone really wrong once, and that’s Chernobyl. Fukushima Daiichi got hit by an earthquake, and then a tsunami, and lost auxiliary power. The plant’s containment held. Estimates for cancer rates were something like 100 additional cases globally. Nobody got acute radiation poisoning, nobody got sick. The panic killed more people than the disaster. Which is kind of a microcosm of our broader relationship to nuclear power: the fear of what could go wrong caused us to stick with technologies that we know kill people. The Keystone coal power plant kills more people than the Fukushima disaster did, and that’s for normal operation of the plant after they installed scrubbers
anyway if you’re still reading I love your work keep it up
Meh, it’s cartoon logic. I mean maybe the joke would have been improved for you and I if it was a Union Carbide plant but let’s be real the Bhopal disaster doesn’t get nearly as much attention as it deserves because nobody knows what the fuck methyl isocyanate is.
of course she does
For me its power + volume up
If it’s stupid but it works it’s still stupid and you’re lucky
Youre gonna love Apollo 14
Well I think it’s funny. But we’re all also strangers on the internet. Your husband will know his coworkers sense of humor better than us.
If its not made of Chêne de Normandie its not a guillotine, it’s just a sparkling sliceyboi.
What extra 5000
If youre not using a custom instruction that brute forces different ways to try to get the other model not to fuck uo youre doing it wrong. If that doesn’t work, add another llm into the pipe
Edit what is a token and why is my boss sending me angry emails
Death would be too easy. Take away his wealth, make him get a real job.
“I’ll fucking kill you! You traitor! You disloyal bitch! When I get out of this abominable binding you’re deader than your mom, your mom who’s burning in hell! I hate you! You’re actually already dead to me!”
as soon as the cone comes off:
“You’re a dick. don’t touch me. what’s for dinner”
I make light but what a poor kitty that looks so stressful
Opensecrets.org has been around for a while. FEC filings are already pretty damning and yet power remains secure. We know who’s paying them, but it’s not illegal and the electorate doesn’t respond to that information. Even if there were a big list of all the dark money it seems like it wouldn’t do much. At least the data is public. Tell your friends.
Edit: and the hacker collective thing is mostly aesthetic. “Anonymous” is even less of a group than antifa.
I’m shocked. Shocked! Well, not that shocked.
I thought that was the elephant’s foot firna sec
“Please don’t point out that I made a huge mistake and should have known better”

Hahahahahaha FUCK YOU ORACLE!
sorry, needed to get that out of my system
RetroFed

One of the interchange ramps on my commute home regularly slows to stop and go due to lane changes. There is an on ramp followed by an off ramp a mile later. They share a lane. Cars entering the freeway, cars exiting the freeway, and cars on the freeway all fight for space. And I live in a relatively affluent area (or rather a very stratified area) so lots of people have newer model cars with automatic cruise control that quickly fills gaps and and then hard brakes when people enter the freeway. It’s a shitshow.
Anyway, I’ve learned that by exiting the freeway a mile early, entering downtown, doing a full circle on a round about, and reentering the freeway allows me to skip that mile or so of hostile traffic. I log my mileage and I have found the longer route actually burns less fuel, even.
Stealing and spending cash is theft. Stealing and using a credit card is theft plus fraud. The sketchy guy I bought weed from in high school taught me many life lessons but the most important one is this: don’t break the law unless you have to, but if you do have to, break only one law at a time. Of course, he got arrested, but that itself taught me not to get involved with organized crime and not to sell drugs out of your landlord’s house. Ray was a smart guy.
If you think about it any food that is extruded could be 3d printed
Where’s my 3d pasta printer. Where’s my bronze nozzle.
I would never do a property damage in a bathroom, but how would they be able to catch the person who did?
I found the extra pixels, I trust you can add them back in yourself
Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs is often called “the wizard book.” Not because Abelson et al believed computers were actually magic but rather because there’s a wizard on the cover and they compare the act of programming to spellcasting, giving instructions to the allegorical beings that live in the hardware. It certainly feels like magic.
The take on the left doesn’t understand reality, and the take in the middle doesn’t understand fun. The take on the right is trying to have fun but is spoken by someone who understands the take in the middle is the literal truth. If the person with the take on the right actually believes computers are magic then they’re actually on the left no matter how much they work with computers.
not quite. attached is a reference for identifying corn. please reach out if you have any further questions.
The two things that are “worse” are that it uses inside out tracking and WiFi 7 for streaming from a pc instead of using base stations and a tether cable. The displays and optics are both straight upgrades and honestly having used a quest 3 I think the inside out tracking and wireless connection are really important for room scale QOL. I imagine the tradeoffs for ease of setup and portability are probably worth it. You’re probably losing sub millimeter precision and a couple milliseconds of latency at most. The unit also weighs like half as much as the Index, and neck strain is real.
tl;Dr yes but also no, it depends who you ask
Screwing the pooch
Failing in general
i was scared for a moment that that would be a screenshot of my profile
Edit: with added context, ew, I rescind my self deprecating joke. i don’t hate myself enough to compare myself to that
damn perhaps we should do something about the underlying socioeconomic problems that cause homelessness and antisocial behavior. No? just shuffle them around some more? oh, okay.
I believe your faith is misplaced but I appreciate your kind words all the same
And, importantly, if anyone asks how many people know you tell them you distributed proof to your associates and that if any harm should come to anyone in your network that the holoimages go public.
boba deez
Science can be a bummer sometimes
i kinda suck tbqh
Definitely tell them. You woukd want someone to tell you.
edit: fair warning I’m not doing great so I’m more prone to doomposting. which this is. anyway:
We Balkanize, the good bits get snatched up by other nation states, and the shit bits get snatched up by private militias. Or, with no conventional munitions left to defend ourselves we start a nuclear war. Or, slim chance here, people vote against this despite Democrats sabotaging the process and then hold them accountable for consistently fucking this up for the last forever, and we reach a kind of degraded equilibrium, american empire declines, chinese empire rises, and MLs tie themselves in knots trying to justify China doing the kinds of things necessary for maintaining a global empire
Oh, and the Enlightenment dies. Like you think its dead now, just wait.
edit again: do not take this comment to be “usa good.” this comment is more along the lines of “geopolitics is a delicate balance of influence distributed amongst several world powers, all of which are bad, and the sudden decline of the biggest player creates a vacuum that is sure to amplify human suffering worldwide”
If I got isekaid I’d go Connecticut Yankee on their ass. Yes, I am insufferable. No, I will not be changing. Your fantasy world will be industrialized. I am the evil wizard. I cast steam engine.
you know what? you’re right, I really shouldn’t be browsing Lemmy at work
