Fuck AIOne teacher here when I brought up paper exams said they find it a hassle to grade.
Mind you I’m not approaching this from a privacy or consumer advocates position. But, as a general university that doesn’t care about that and is just choosing among options available to try to make cheating more difficult.
I’m more just amazed at how lax electronics in classes has become during exams more than anything.
Platform specific to windows and mac devices. Thing is if a university wants to create a hard to cheat environment while refusing to do paper exams that is the best option available.
Alternative is choosing to administer exams on personal electronics while doing nothing to prevent access to internet, notes, and software yet asking students to not use it.
That is just naive. And this has been the standard at least where I went to school even before AI. It’s not like laptops and smartphones are something new. Its been ubiquitous over a decade now. Yet, some schools act like they’ve never dealt with it before just because of AI when even prior to AI teachers were well aware of the cheating capabilities of electronics. Even graphing calculators.

I was talking about at location courses. Those had cameras in the rooms people were testing in addition to exam proctors walking around.
Online courses are just a whole different affair with it being at home, and just a lost cause at trying to prevent cheating. Ones I took were more project based, since professors knew people would find ways to have access to everything at home so little point in telling people what is and isn’t allowed.
Yeah, it’s interesting seeing some professors complaining about how AI has made catching cheaters harder now.
But then you see that they are letting students have access to phones and laptops during exam with no software/Internet restriction and you think…yeah I wonder why…what could possibly be done…
Not allow them those devices for a subject like history during an exam? No impossible.
When I brought it up here a teacher went lol but they have phones and tablets. As if its not worth even trying to prevent. And also they said they didn’t want to do paper and pencil either because its too much work to grade.
There are programs that completely lock down laptops for exams preventing you from using internet, going to the desktop, open other docs, etc so its not like it has to be paper and pencil to prevent AI usage. But, its like some professors just can’t wrap their head around the concept of not allowing full access to electronics or none at all despite the subject matter not being something like programming, but history.
Yeah, I had them my professors didn’t let us use them. Trying to sneak a look would lead to cheating and risk expulsion if caught. And cameras in some classes and multiple people like TAs walking around.
If laptop or tablets were used for exam taking they made us use programs like examsoft that locked down the hardware so you couldn’t access internet, files, or other programs until you finished the exam.
Or it was open note, open laptop, internet, so professors didn’t care at all what was used.
So all I see is zero effort of exam proctoring and then being baffled that students are cheating despite making the environment very easy to do so. It’s like you are afraid to take away or restrict electronic usage during exams or the concept is so foreign to you.
PrivacyOr loads a dummy profile and deletes other profiles without giving away what is happening.
Yeah I didn’t like it so ran it on an old laptop just for exams and not my personal one.
But, if schools really wanted to it is possible to have digital exams where the usual browser bypasses aren’t a thing, and the laptops cant be used for internet searches, AI queries, etc.
Without that you might as well just go with an open book, open internet, open ai, group messages, use whatever is at your disposal type exam. Because rules at that point is pretty pointless.
PC Master RaceEndgame gear. Comes with optical switches, and you can switch them out easily. Opens up without ruining the mouse feet too and there’s some custom PCBs you can get to use generic mechanical switches. No soldering required.
Can’t speak for the longevity of the mouse wheel though.
I know cheating was a thing, but now devices that people would have loved to have access to when internet was a thing like phones and laptops being allowed in exams makes prep like yours not even necessary. In some schools teachers collect people’s phones for instance and dont allow people to bring out other electronics.
It’s why I don’t even get why professors are even upset at AI use during exams if they are allowing these devices to begin with.
Its like giving a math exam and telling students calculators aren’t allowed to be used, but you may bring and use your calculator for non calculation purposes. Then being surprised they dared to use the calculator for calculating.
You don’t even have to try to be sneaky and try to hide that you are cheating anymore with how easy some schools make it now.
Its not a browser that locks down. It actual software that completely hijacks the computer so you cant exit the program until it is done. Can’t get into the desktop at all like some malware.
You are making it seem more difficult than it is. Problem is already solved. By making it something open hardware and Internet might as well just give everyone a pass at that point and not complain about whatever tools are used when full access hardware is allowed to be used.
But would you have been able to? Ochem wouldn’t give access to laptops and just be a paper and pencil exam.
External devices would be banned from the get go so attempting to use your phone or laptop would get you a 0 for cheating.
These professors seem pretty dumb allowing all sorts of open access to devices during exams that are completely open to view and run anything and get surprised people are using AI. Why does a history exam need a computer with open access anyways. This isn’t a programming course.
These all seem like problems easily avoided if internet access and devices weren’t allowed, and the exam was just paper and pencil, which most courses gain nothing from. Especially non programming courses like history.
There’s also exam software that lock down laptops so only the exam can be accessed until it is finished if a professor insists on digital submission.
Professors seem as dumb as the students for finding all sorts of convoluted ways to try to stop AI based cheating during exams when the solution is to look back to their own past at how exams were given to them. Idiots.

This is the type of stuff that leads to auto installs of applications such as logitech, razer, and in this case LG companion app.
Can’t really rely on ltsc, since it was utilizing Windows driver install process so any device that tries to do what LG did is a risk. Its why people with LG monitors found that app installed despite not having smart TV functionality.
Are you using NVIDIA or AMD? In the past I had problems with trying to get NVIDIA cards working with Linux and encountered problems like freezing too, but been fine with AMD.

Loving the app after trying out a few. Is there a way to search comments? Seeing posts, communities, users, and urls but couldn’t find comments section for search results.
That isnt enough since even dumb displays like LG monitors used Windows itself to install unwanted software on people’s PCs. Would have to actually disable that setting in Windows or use Linux.
The problem was you could do the right thing of keeping it offline, but that it used Windows to install unwanted software. Of course, solution is install Linux, but for the average user who decides to hook up their laptop and is using Windows they’d end up with unpleasant software installed.
And it affected LG monitors too, which means Windows PC users were affected.

Yeah, its like making assumptions about cinema and TV show fans, but many don’t keep up with celebrity news or culture. Its just a source of entertainment to them they like to watch.
Games being some niche demographic that is in the loop of every discourse is a very outdated old person view now. Its actually so popular now the revenue from it is more than film and music combined.
Even something like Marvel and DC being the stereotypical interest of some nerds no longer applies once it became mainstream, and that’s where games have been at for years now.
I would switch to Linux or Windows 10 LTSC if Windows is needed on the laptop.
People who are still using meta products might lean towards the demographic that isn’t as educated on it. And the top 3 scam platforms according to the article are meta ones. Which either leans older or younger these days with them appearing to have the same level of tech literacy.
Banning valuable subs like piracy, emulation, and roms would get at least those people. The subs that provide valuable guides and resources like that would have to get purged for users to be forced to seek out alternatives.
I hope they purge piracy, roms, emulation. Currently that is a huge valuable resource, and getting rid of that might lead to those users coming here. Those types of contributors are the ones who add value with their content.

I don’t know what youtube ads are like anymore. I ran away long ago when youtube went from putting ads in the front of videos and letting you skip after a few seconds to putting them in throughout the video.
I ran to newpipe when using it on my phone and never looked back. Also started the domino effect of making it easier to cut off usage of google account related services.
On my TV I use a minipc and use firefox with ublock origin.
And on iOS I think brave blocks youtube ads, and ublock is available for Safari now. I never bothered to install the youtube app on iOS.

I’ll have to pass on it. Wish meta weren’t the main ones making VR headsets. I’ve wanted to play Half Life Alyx but entry cost has been meta or pay more, and I’ve opted for passing on VR.
This is one of those cases where AI generated comment pasted over the original comments to poision the data comes in handy. So AI is training off AI.
I really enjoyed it. I had played the original a long time ago so my memory wasn’t fresh enough to do a direct comparison. But, it hit lot of the creepy vibes I remember. The PC version doesn’t come with the EA launcher either, which was another plus.
Whether its meta or not, discrete wearable video recording is not something I am in favor of. Like the recent LG spyware installing on people’s Windows PC shows, many tech companies aren’t in the business of being privacy respecting in the products they offer. It’s usually those companies that gain market share.
And individuals with how quick they are to live stream and share every picture and video voluntarily to social media sites doesn’t much lend to responsible use either. At least those people aren’t usually hiding that they are recording.
When it comes to legal audio wiretapping those are already sufficient in places where it is legal to be used in cases like yours. So I don’t much see a need to further extend hidden audio recordings to also include hidden video recordings with wearables. Cases where video is also needed seem more like very specific niche cases involving investigations, so to shift it to being an every day casual accessory I dont see as necessary.
How many music streaming services and digital downloads of mp3 and flacs remain playable on only certain hardware?
The music digital space is much more open than console games, which will only work on very specific hardware. And DRM free downloads. Music is one space that is surprisingly pro consumer when it comes to compatibility and control of purchases.
If consoles were as open as PCs, being able to install any OS and programs on it then physical shift would be less of an issue on consoles. Consoles are so locked down they can get away with paywalling multiplayer, and even jailbreak can’t really bypass that.
That is how exams usually are though for classes like physics, chemistry, and physics where memorization won’t save you with it being solving problems to arrive to the correct solution.
Something like anatomy is pure memorization so being memorization is no issue, since it is just learning names of musicles, nerves, and bones. And when it comes to classes like physiology it builds on knowing what you knew from anatomy, but being tested on how well you can actually explain the mechanisms of what is going on within the body.
I guess it depends on the subject if an exam is just memorization based or not and leaves students knowing nothing.

True, but every option comes down to a hypothetical scenario which does speak of how it is at a decent place.
And pc being an open hardware open OS system makes it so people can just hop to something, and have alternative means like piracy if worst comes to worse.
PC benefit in the end is control over hardware, the programs we can run on it, and modifications that can be done to it. Something that requires hoping for jailbreaks when it comes to consoles.
Linux becoming more user friendly and accessible is a plus though for individuals who like diy PCs, but stuck with Windows due to game support. Compared to then and now moving away from Microsoft is less of a hassle. That is pretty huge for long time Windows PC gamers. Not just for gaming, but regular usage of computers.
From the sounds of it you dont like pc gaming in general, and that is fine. Do hope you can see how a non corporate OS alternative is a win though. Just having an option that is not a huge downgrade to a trillion dollar backed OS is amazing.
You are on the fediverse after all which is an alternative from company run social media like reddit. Which also has its ups and downs when it comes to accessibility much like PC gaming, but there are similar pros to it too that some giving it a chance.

People aren’t any better, since people are more likely to be recording specifically for the purposes of resharing and we do live in a social media age.
And these devices as they gain popularity would be relaying information back to the companies anyways, so make the claims of it being local or private not matter when that wouldn’t be the average wearable discrete tech that would gain mainstream popularity.
