TechnologyThis is similar to the type of arguments made by those wanting increased surveillance with stuff like flock camera and ID online verification expansion. Pointing to the bad things in the world it helps prevent or track down that happens.
And pointing to the law to keep pushing what they are allowed to record and track.
Privacy and security has been a balancing act. And even examples of bad thing that happens I’m sure you can relate is the very common attempt at emotional appeal used by them.
Not denying your use case, but when it comes to surveillance they all seem to use the argument of safety.
Even then I could see people not wanting picture, video, or audio recorded of them even if it is just kept locally for private use. And that’s the problem of these glasses with trying to be discrete so people who would have avoided you or asked you to stop recording before having a conversation are left unaware.
Yeah, cheating with electronics is nothing new. Laptop and phones and internet has existed long before AI, and people could get outside help through messages to have people feed them answers.
Yet, schools dealt with it by either doing in class paper and pencil exams, or digital in class exams on locked down computers with no internet access and no desktop access with software like examsoft.
I’ve had even math teachers ban graphing calculators or provide use of in class graphing calculators well aware of notes that could be typed into them and programs made to solve answers before hand.
So all these current issues seem to be the result of either schools moving to take home, or letting people use personal electronics with full internet and file access during exams. Its like teachers lost the ability to say no to what is and isn’t allowed during exams.
RedditI hated it even on phone because text doesn’t fill the width of the screen so there’s a lot of waste space and having to do more scrolling to read.
Also, I don’t want to see crap like related posts and get shown recommendations.
And you see less comments when there are replies to each other which leads to have to keep clicking…more replies.
I’m using redlib with setting set to compact and wide now. Still have the same crappy more replies. But, at least the basic presentation is cleaner and texts fill the width of the screen.

If people are doing even tiny things like covering their laptop camera, or disconnecting their TV from the internet it means they don’t want it either.
PC Master RaceNo, but PC is open hardware and open OS. What PC gamers expect from console hardware requires jailbreak.
PCs can run on hardware people assembled themselves. And programs can run on different operating systems.
Consoles are locked down, don’t let you install a completely different OS, don’t let you install whatever programs you want, and most importantly do their best to prevent you from having competing platforms on it. It’s so locked down they even paywall multiplayer for games that have no paywall on PC. The hardware doesn’t feel owned, but a rental with strings attached with no workarounds other than hoping a exploit comes out.
That’s why digital is less an issue on PC than consoles due to hardware you control. On consoles you don’t control your hardware but at least discs brought back some control on that end with games that can’t have ownership revoked and is transferable. But, now that sole benefit of control for consoles is disappearing.

You are locked to the ecosystem, but the disc function can’t be revoked through account ban and is actually transferable to other people because of that.
Something Sony dislikes compared to digital where there is no second hand market.
Switching to PC proves the point that if games are digital people prefer open hardware and open OS options over locked down hardware.

Big difference for me is PC is open hardware and open OS. Should the worst happen there are possible solutions from those voyaging the seas.
But, consoles are locked down, and jailbreaks can be years away.
Its why despite buying digital on PC without issue I continued to buy physical for consoles, since I felt more in control of PC hardware than I did console hardware. Physical on consoles was a way of gaining back some control despite the hardware being locked.
old.reddit is region based so it’ll eventually get phased out from working for everyone.
Like I found that with VPN Sweden is still one place where old.reddit still works without login. But, others prompt for login to use old.reddit.
But, I just moved to using redlib instance if reddit is needed now due to not wanting to login to an account.

Got curious myself and came across your post to find out api keys aren’t given anymore. That’s a shame shreddit was great with the gdpr files.
I think power delete suite is the best option at this point, but depending on the number of comments it’ll be a slow process of having to run it every few weeks or several months to clear everything if you have thousands of comments.
I think it has to do with there being a limit to how many comments are shown on your profile. So even if you have thousands it might just show like 200 or whatever the limit is, and then after a few days or so it’ll populate it with the older 200 comments that weren’t visible before. So you’ll just have to keep running it over and over.

They didn’t even boycott PS+ switching to paid online. I never paid for PS+. And never bought the PS5. Those who were already dissatisfied with Sony left, and those who stayed I doubt will stop buying Sony consoles even without physical PS6 games.

With discs Sony can’t revoke your game like with digital. Doesn’t matter if they banned your account. Disc still works for you and whoever comes to gain possession of it.
I been testing it out for about a month and it is a nice OS, and been enjoying the HDR support. Did wonder why videos didn’t play initially though when I didn’t have trouble on Linux Mint and Ubuntu until I found out I had to install RPM fusion. But, after that smooth sailing so far.
Average users are fine on Linux. I set up my parents on it and they are able to launch their browser, email, etc and not bother with terminal. They didn’t have trouble adjusting from Windows and MacOS to Linux.
Only ones who have trouble are those who rely on specific software for work like Adobe or gamers who can’t go without certain Windows only games. But, average non gamer and non professional who wants to just use it for basic tasks are fine.
And depending on the distro like ones with long term support the UI isn’t going to keep changing up on them.
Fuck AIYeah, that is what my exam experiences have been of zero tolerance for phones and sometimes laptops if exam were paper and pencil. It makes the current news now so puzzling since phones back then despite not having AI access were just as capable back then, and outside help through internet and messages was easy to get so professors back then had the same concerns of electronics being used for cheating.
Only change then and now seems like professors are not enforcing electronic restrictions as strictly anymore, and students to no surprise are taking advantage of being able to cheat out in the open.
One teacher here when I brought up paper exams said they find it a hassle to grade.
Mind you I’m not approaching this from a privacy or consumer advocates position. But, as a general university that doesn’t care about that and is just choosing among options available to try to make cheating more difficult.
I’m more just amazed at how lax electronics in classes has become during exams more than anything.
Platform specific to windows and mac devices. Thing is if a university wants to create a hard to cheat environment while refusing to do paper exams that is the best option available.
Alternative is choosing to administer exams on personal electronics while doing nothing to prevent access to internet, notes, and software yet asking students to not use it.
That is just naive. And this has been the standard at least where I went to school even before AI. It’s not like laptops and smartphones are something new. Its been ubiquitous over a decade now. Yet, some schools act like they’ve never dealt with it before just because of AI when even prior to AI teachers were well aware of the cheating capabilities of electronics. Even graphing calculators.

I was talking about at location courses. Those had cameras in the rooms people were testing in addition to exam proctors walking around.
Online courses are just a whole different affair with it being at home, and just a lost cause at trying to prevent cheating. Ones I took were more project based, since professors knew people would find ways to have access to everything at home so little point in telling people what is and isn’t allowed.
Yeah, it’s interesting seeing some professors complaining about how AI has made catching cheaters harder now.
But then you see that they are letting students have access to phones and laptops during exam with no software/Internet restriction and you think…yeah I wonder why…what could possibly be done…
Not allow them those devices for a subject like history during an exam? No impossible.
When I brought it up here a teacher went lol but they have phones and tablets. As if its not worth even trying to prevent. And also they said they didn’t want to do paper and pencil either because its too much work to grade.
There are programs that completely lock down laptops for exams preventing you from using internet, going to the desktop, open other docs, etc so its not like it has to be paper and pencil to prevent AI usage. But, its like some professors just can’t wrap their head around the concept of not allowing full access to electronics or none at all despite the subject matter not being something like programming, but history.

I don’t know what youtube ads are like anymore. I ran away long ago when youtube went from putting ads in the front of videos and letting you skip after a few seconds to putting them in throughout the video.
I ran to newpipe when using it on my phone and never looked back. Also started the domino effect of making it easier to cut off usage of google account related services.
On my TV I use a minipc and use firefox with ublock origin.
And on iOS I think brave blocks youtube ads, and ublock is available for Safari now. I never bothered to install the youtube app on iOS.

I’ll have to pass on it. Wish meta weren’t the main ones making VR headsets. I’ve wanted to play Half Life Alyx but entry cost has been meta or pay more, and I’ve opted for passing on VR.
This is one of those cases where AI generated comment pasted over the original comments to poision the data comes in handy. So AI is training off AI.
I really enjoyed it. I had played the original a long time ago so my memory wasn’t fresh enough to do a direct comparison. But, it hit lot of the creepy vibes I remember. The PC version doesn’t come with the EA launcher either, which was another plus.
Whether its meta or not, discrete wearable video recording is not something I am in favor of. Like the recent LG spyware installing on people’s Windows PC shows, many tech companies aren’t in the business of being privacy respecting in the products they offer. It’s usually those companies that gain market share.
And individuals with how quick they are to live stream and share every picture and video voluntarily to social media sites doesn’t much lend to responsible use either. At least those people aren’t usually hiding that they are recording.
When it comes to legal audio wiretapping those are already sufficient in places where it is legal to be used in cases like yours. So I don’t much see a need to further extend hidden audio recordings to also include hidden video recordings with wearables. Cases where video is also needed seem more like very specific niche cases involving investigations, so to shift it to being an every day casual accessory I dont see as necessary.
How many music streaming services and digital downloads of mp3 and flacs remain playable on only certain hardware?
The music digital space is much more open than console games, which will only work on very specific hardware. And DRM free downloads. Music is one space that is surprisingly pro consumer when it comes to compatibility and control of purchases.
If consoles were as open as PCs, being able to install any OS and programs on it then physical shift would be less of an issue on consoles. Consoles are so locked down they can get away with paywalling multiplayer, and even jailbreak can’t really bypass that.
That is how exams usually are though for classes like physics, chemistry, and physics where memorization won’t save you with it being solving problems to arrive to the correct solution.
Something like anatomy is pure memorization so being memorization is no issue, since it is just learning names of musicles, nerves, and bones. And when it comes to classes like physiology it builds on knowing what you knew from anatomy, but being tested on how well you can actually explain the mechanisms of what is going on within the body.
I guess it depends on the subject if an exam is just memorization based or not and leaves students knowing nothing.

Not using tiktok and similar socials has me missing out on lot of stuff like that. And being less in the know about what influencers are pushing.

True, but every option comes down to a hypothetical scenario which does speak of how it is at a decent place.
And pc being an open hardware open OS system makes it so people can just hop to something, and have alternative means like piracy if worst comes to worse.
PC benefit in the end is control over hardware, the programs we can run on it, and modifications that can be done to it. Something that requires hoping for jailbreaks when it comes to consoles.
Linux becoming more user friendly and accessible is a plus though for individuals who like diy PCs, but stuck with Windows due to game support. Compared to then and now moving away from Microsoft is less of a hassle. That is pretty huge for long time Windows PC gamers. Not just for gaming, but regular usage of computers.
From the sounds of it you dont like pc gaming in general, and that is fine. Do hope you can see how a non corporate OS alternative is a win though. Just having an option that is not a huge downgrade to a trillion dollar backed OS is amazing.
You are on the fediverse after all which is an alternative from company run social media like reddit. Which also has its ups and downs when it comes to accessibility much like PC gaming, but there are similar pros to it too that some giving it a chance.

People aren’t any better, since people are more likely to be recording specifically for the purposes of resharing and we do live in a social media age.
And these devices as they gain popularity would be relaying information back to the companies anyways, so make the claims of it being local or private not matter when that wouldn’t be the average wearable discrete tech that would gain mainstream popularity.

Then use locked down computers that doesn’t do anything, but display the exam and student can select multiple choice and type where prompted?
Its all solutions that existed before AI. Nothing has really changed over the past decade when it comes to not allowing or restricting electronics during exams other than schools forgetting they can do that.
Students looking up answers over the internet or getting text messages were just as much of a problem as AI if exams allowed students to bring those devices and use it freely. Even graphing calculator usage was restricted by smarter teachers aware of its note storing and program capabilities.
I personally don’t want to be recorded. I dont have a choice in the matter with it not being illegal, but I’ll avoid people who are obviously recording when possible.
Can’t do much about people going out of their way to be discrete, but if they are trying to be discrete those people tend to be people who are aware others don’t like it but don’t care what others think.
Same. That’s pretty much why. It doesn’t matter if it isn’t a Facebook device. People might be recording to upload to facebook related socials or end up reposting on facebook media socials. Its an uploading sharing social media society we live in.
I’m not going to go out of my way to stop someone recording. That just makes you stand out more, and end up content. So even if something is legal and people aren’t doing anything it doesn’t mean they are willingly consenting. They’ve accepted that’s how it is.
