Please enjoy this photo of the interior of a UTDC ICTS Mark I

I’m not really a rail fan in the sense that I don’t collect facts and figures on trains. I don’t really know much about how they work or anything like that. But being on a train just makes me feel really nice.

I think I’ve been on the Scarborough RT like twice in my life. I am a South Etobicoke girly. Scarborough, especially north of Eglington might as well have been a different planet. I had a job in Scarborough for a while, but I took a bus from Kennedy, going south. Every time I’ve been to the Scarborough Civic Centre (the eastern terminus of the line) I went by bike. Still, this little train made a huge impact on me.

I stumbled upon this interior photo today (source) and I think it’s the first one I have seen online. I am kicking myself for not taking more (any?) photos when I was on it. I have to catalogue my old photos so there is still hope.

I remember the seats being different, but I could be mixing it up with similar vehicles I have been in elsewhere. These look like the seats from the T-1 subway cars which came into service in 1996.

There are some photos of the wood paneling on the Scarborough RT page on Transit Toronto and another interior photo (still with the new seats) on the Canadian Public Transit Discussion Board Wiki . I found a photo of Santa and his helpers from the year of it’s opening, but it’s not all that helpful in giving a good view of the chairs.

The ride was bumpy and loud, and the cars were hot. I don’t think it would have been a very nice way to make a daily commute. Still, it was wonderful to get a chance to ride on these tiny guys and go somewhere new.
