If you weren’t really invested in creating it, you certainly won’t be invested in maintaining it.
More than that, if you were not invested in creating it, you lack the skill for maintaining it. When a problem pops up that “AI” can’t solve, slop flop happens.

But you did not publish them on Flathub either, right? The assumption is, that published tools have reached a certain maturity that is meant to be used by public. So if people don’t use Ai, then they don’t even publish unfinished projects they won’t work on. I also don’t need to use Ai to make mistakes. That does not invalidate the data and arguments made in this research results.
I got them as GitHub releases, or crates.io, one even on nixpkgs.
But I was just making a joke that I am just as bad as the AI apps.
Yeah I actually liken it to that too. There have always been lots of one-off throwaway projects out there and that’s fine. These little one-off slop projects are fine too, as long as everyone understands what they are and they’re not pushed in anyone’s face or polluting any digital shelves where people are looking for real products. It’s no different than automating something with a shitty little forgettable bash script. It’s fine for personal use, you can of course freely share it with someone who’s clearly struggling with the same issue themselves, but it doesn’t really merit advertising it as an awesome new tool for everyone.
One of the (many) big problems with AI is how convincing it can make things appear. A shitty little throwaway bash script is obviously a throwaway bash script and nobody’s going to mistake it for quality software, maybe it does the job fine in a very narrow window of circumstances but it’s not safe to roll out widely. A throwaway AI project on the other hand can appear like it’s a fucking well-documented production-quality scalable enterprise solution in a box. It’s NOT. But the fact that it convinces people it is (both the author and the users) is the biggest problem with this. It’s all fake. It’s full of bugs. The documentation is nonsense. Half the features don’t even work, or are literally just fake UI boilerplate that looks like it works until you realize it was never really doing anything at all just failing behind the scenes and possibly deleting or corrupting your entire production database while cheerfully creating the illusion of success.
AI is based on an interesting technology but at least the way it’s being deployed today it was not designed to be correct, even if sometimes it is, it was designed to be manipulative, sycophantic and convincing and that’s why it’s leading people into AI psychosis and creating all these slop-peddlers who legitimately think they are changing the world with their sloppy little throwaway projects. AI is being used and developed as a hack against the human brain and human society. We are fallible, gullible creatures, and they are trying to use it to scour our entire economy for money by conning us into believing it’s more than it is. It won’t work, but its convinced them it will, and it’s convincing us it will, and it was even sort of working for awhile. It won’t work anymore once the bubble pops, but we’re apparently not quite there yet.
well of course they were. it’s hard to update or scale AI built crap because the vast majority of the time the agent will deny even building it and then re-write whatever it previously wrote from scratch.
Without reading the article, I assume this is because creating a successful app takes commitment, and vibe coding lets you code without commitment.
Even without vibe coding, writing an app from scratch has always been the easier/easiest part. The hard part is maintaining the app and keeping it alive over the years.
It always amazes me when a project has a maintainer for longer than 10 years.
I always have said. Open Source shouldn’t mean free labor. I personally develop open source software and get paid. And I am really against advocating that because the project is open source, the maintainer is not supposed to get paid and do it in their free time, voluntarily, and as a hobby.
To be fair: This study looked at the repos after flathub had announced to not accept these apps any more. I would say it is surprising that development didn’t stop everywhere immediately after that.

Probably people who thought they could make an app with AI, realised it’s not possible to make good software without actually learning how software is made, and never opened Cursor or whatever again.
It’s easy to slop together the 10 Billionth remake of Pacman, Minesweeper, Kanban board, ToDo list, etc.
Actually making something innovative, unique, interesting, and useful is tough. It requires skill, knowledge, creativity, and passion to keep at it long after the high of vibe coding your first solitaire game fades away.
If LLMs are blockchain 2.0, then Vibe coding is its NFT fad. Just a way to take advantage of useful idiots who think being a software engineer consists of typing code all day as fast as possible.
There was a rash of people shoveling kanban “first project"-ware for a year or two a while ago. Everyone and their mother made a kanban app and advertised it on reddit and Lemmy. All also abandoned within a few months and were exceedingly mediocre to begin with.
Just because you made a project, doesn’t mean you have to advertise it as a maintained app, especially if it is one of 1k of the same projects.
I think the problem partially is people thinking they have to “get a following” and get “github stars” on everything they make in order for it to be a valuable experience.
I the clearest indication of this is that we have not seen any products to displace existing market leaders.

Normal development: Start work on new project, design it really well, start work, get bored after a week. Project 10% towards first release. Oh well.
Vibe coding: Have a buggy mess ready in a few hours, spend the next few days improving it somewhat, get bored after a week, app was already released by the time you quit.
It’s also being invested in and proud of the hard work one does. I don’t think these words mean anything to a vibe coder.

I literally can’t stay on a project long enough unless it’s work where money motivates me. I’ll think of a new cool project and start on that instead of the previous one.

Why they didn’t measure a baseline of general apps and non-AI apps abandonment rate?

For all we know the abandonment rate of general new apps might be 98% or maybe 2%, who knows they didn’t gave us that number.
As far as I know they didn’t even measure it. They only took 120 apps labeled as AI without trying to get any contrasts data. Incredibly poor methodology.
I agree with you, they should have done this (was suggesting this early in the comments too). I wouldn’t say the information is completely useless, but its true that without context its hard to make hard conclusions.
I agree that AI slop is bad, but I don’t really agree with their method of determining if an app is abandoned (no updates in 2-3 months).
Sometimes apps don’t need updates. Some Linux apps don’t receive major updates for years. I used backupninja (https://0xacab.org/liberate/backupninja) for long time even though sometimes there’s 2-3 years between releases, because it did what I needed. (I switched to Borgmatic at some point though).
I didn’t update one of my apps for over a year because it already did everything I needed, and I wasn’t receiving any major feature requests. There’s still some bugs I need to fix but I just haven’t gotten around to it yet.
These were new applications and so we can assume over time they need updates. Or at least it shows how much interested developers are working on it. It would also be nice to have a random sample size of similar applications without the Ai to have a comparison how often they get updated.
I update my whole complete Linux box like twice a year. Thrice when I’m bored.
