to be honest - and that probably is 100% my fault - I never got in touch with any of the social aspects. okay I habe no big projects nline, nor did I contribute much. but every time I tried to, it was ignored by maintainers. I found forks of forks of forks of drivers for my capture card, none answering my questions until after years of waiting I found a statement on why it will never be fixed by open source. to me open source is rather a practical aspect of trustworthyness and capability to fix stuff if none is there to do it. Fix it alone that is. with AI its not alone anymore, since I am able tonfind solutions in architectures and languages I am not proficient in. I do not say these will be better then human code, but at least there IS code which can be created faster rhan waiting for ages to be fixed by someone who has no interest in doing so.

This might be one of those situations where the difference between Free Software and Open Source becomes more clear.
Since the beginning, the goal of Open Source was to make the technical advantages of an open development process appealing to companies and the first thing they had to do was to remove the social and political aspects the FSF was advocating for instead.

Torvalds has always been more interested in the technical side of things and he never made a secret of that, thus, while I disagree with him about the whole "it's just a tool" thing, I am not surprised by his opinions.

I am not a dev so I can speak to what LLMs can do for programing. But, from what I have heard, it is still an enviromental issue. As well as stolen material to train it.

Maybe there are LLMs that dont have an issue with these things. Or less so have these issues. There is so much hype, I dont know what to trust.

Maybe if a project declairs the LLM used so a person can decide if they want to in-directly support *that* LLM. Or at all.

@thelinuxexperiment Torvalds instance does not look unclear to me, he is putting individual decision and efficiency above social/environmental discussions, stating that AI tools can be useful (and have been in finding hidden bugs) but should not either be forced or banned in his view.

Not to be rude, but this really looked like a case of your personal bias messing up how you interpreted his statements.
