Microsoft CEO says "YouTube monetizes Xbox better than we do", ahead of expected layoffs | Satya Nadella bemoans performance of Xbox

Xbox has been my primary platform for most of my life. Parents didn’t like video games so I didn’t play much until I was an adult and secondhand stuff was really cheap and accessible.
After switching to Stadia, which was phenomenal for a casual-new-dad gamer and I loved it, before it was unsurprisingly killed, coming back was entirely different. Everything was digital, there is no secondhand market for games, and consoles are increasingly expensive.
Making Xbox less accessible and more restrictive may have pushed me to a windows PC a few years ago… But making Windows 11 such a shit show made me switch everything to Linux.
I’d love to stay but they seem determined to suck everything that was great out of it.
At this point, this is just the MS gaming pipeline.
Hilarious to hear Nadella whine about Xbox performance when he is directly responsible for it going to shit. 30% mandatory profit margins was a death sentence
Windows PC Master Race.
Hey fuckwit, maybe XBox division would be doing better if you hadn’t aggressively fucking enshitified it. Just saying.
Xbox started as the underdog, and while it didn’t hold a candle to PS2’s price and library… they at least brought some competition to the stagnating market after Sega’s departure. The Wii/360/PS3 era would have been so much worse without the 360.
and then when Microsoft stopped trying to compete and instead tried tying the brand to TV/Media/Windows, Sony and Nintendo seemed to collectively think that competition is pointless and the consumers must be wrung dry of any spare cash and ownership they could have.
If they really wanted the brand to turn around in an instant: Make Xbox Live service free. Offer a week-long game rental per month from a curated rotating list for every console owner. Get developers on their side by limiting predatory practices publishers are using. Start printing physical media with benefits like an included strategy guide, a poster, a map, or heck a sticker pack. Anything. Just get Xbox brand back in eyesight. It has to be tangible so that people can actually notice it while shopping instead of scrolling through a list on a storefront where it’d be missed.
But no- instead we have to talk about how there is a failure to monetize the brand. Boohoo, they can’t get even more money.
They make 125 Billion a year in pure, uncut profit and are laying off people.
Srsly, some of us have been saying this for what seems like our whole lives, but fuck microsoft - gtfo. Mac, Linux, nothing - all are better than those fuckers.
If I’m Microsoft I’m saying fuck it, no more hardware, we suck at it, and I’d make a version of Windows optimized for the big screen that runs on any PC you want. Then beyond that, just become a publisher. They just simply are not good at making hardware.
XBOX hardware is fine. It’s what they’ve done with it that’s the problem.
The original Xbox was a powerhouse. I had so many CDs saved on that hard drive and it never even mentioned any storage restrictions. Shredding runs on Amped 2 woth my own music was so sick.
They were way ahead of the curve back then. They’ve just enshittified in the meantime.
Eh no?
Hardware is the only thing Microsoft remotely did well. Microsoft software has sucked donkey balls since the first basic they released and that wasn’t event theirs. Microsoft doesn’t know how to build good software, they never did

Xbox was so great when it launched. Thanks for bringing us decent length controller cables, hard drives, and Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay 👌
Nowadays, uhh thanks for making an unnecessary media center I guess 🤷♀️
Hard disagree. The OG Xbox was very rough around the edges. There’s a reason the 360 did miles better.
Xbox gave me xbmc. It’s ok in my book.
It was both, tbh.
It was a very rough product but the person above you is also right that it pushed the industry forward in a fair few ways.
Escape from Butcher Bay ruled 🤘
Xbox died then Peter Moore left/got kicked out due to not liking Project Natal/Kinect.
LMAO, it’s like these people don’t realise that they are in charge!
Nice he admitted that, now he should resign and let someone else do better
Yeah and whos fault except yours is that, Satan Nutella? Huh? Who could have possibly changed things to have this be any different? Who is responsible for what the company as a whole does?!
To be fair, while he should of got rid of Phil sooner, you don’t want higher ups micro-managing. Satya doesn’t and shouldn’t control each division.
So… your complaint is that you’re really bad at selling a product that has a high demand… ?
Maybe if you didn’t let XBOX run like a scitso 10 year old on drugs it would be in a better place.
Do you mean schizo, like schizophrenic? I have to admit I’ve never thought about how the slang term looks spelled out. It looks weird.
You got it!
these mega corporations long overdue to be broken up into small, focused, specialized companies
What a fucking useless scumbag
That’s an insane thing to say, especially considering most people streaming and making videos about games are probably not using an Xbox to do it, let alone making any money doing it.
I know I’m gonna say something batshit crazy but here I go anyways: Have you tried dramatic pause listening to your customers to gasp know what do they want?
Shocking, I know. But it might just tell you why the fuck is xbox performing as a 2026 virtual boy.
Xbox was never meant to make anything of quality. Xbox was just a Trojan horse to trap customers into a Microsoft walled garden.
A bunch of greedy no talent monopolists whose only skill is using a lot of money to buy out competitors are running Microsoft.
how are you supposed to trap customers without quality bait?
Microsoft sees quality that someone else made and it buys it. It works for a bit but they don’t know how to perpetuate quality.
You’re describing the entire AAA gaming industry. It was like that before Xbox, and it will be like that after.
Sure. But that’s different than “Xbox was never meant to make anything of quality.” Their intention is clearly to make quality things, they have just been sucking at it.
In reality, I am sure that the executives making financial decisions have no clue what a quality game is.
They see a game that sells well and that is what they consider quality.
Once a studio sells out to a larger one there should be no expectation of future quality or innovation from that studio. The studio’s new mandate becomes “make more of what sold and don’t change anything” which is pretty much a coffin for that franchise.
You’re not wrong but is that not the entire console business in a nutshell? Getting a console is essentially signing up for a closed platform
Nintendo has a very reliable and steady amount of high quality AAA and AA games that they make for their console.
Sony used to have a very reliable quality AAA and indie games on their console.
Microsoft had Halo and Forza.
I think the difference is, Sony and Nintendo build their exclusives through close support, while Microsoft and Epic have just tried buying them in.
Amazon and Google have essentially tried the same thing, and gave up because pouring money in isn’t a full business plan.
Nintendo maybe. Sony likes buyouts too, just not on the scale of Microsoft. Ask Destiny fans how well Sony’s buyout of Bungie is going.
Bet he didn’t like all the praise Sharma got so now he has to put his mark on the project. Bet the decision to shutter studios came from him out of the blue. Sharma was supposed to be the fall gal. Xbox was supposed to be her glass cliff.
This belongs in a “Leopards Ate My Face” comm. They jacked up the price of the Xbox. They doubled the price of GamePass Ultimate, and most games added to it are just shovelware trash.
Here’s a solution: Add Steam to GamePass Ultimate. What I’m saying is, for $23 a month or whatever it’s down to now, you can use Steam and play all your Steam games that will run on XSX (which should be most of them since it’s an x86-64 platform running a bastardised version of Windows). So you can get a game dirt cheap and play it on Xbox, but you have to pay Xbox monthly. You will still save money! Especially if you have a large Steam library. And not just Steam — add GOG and maybe Epic as well. So basically the platforms that have free games all the time. That would massively boost the value of GamePass, and since an XSX is still cheaper than a gaming PC, would offset the rising price of the console.
But who knows, maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about. Let the Steam Machine come out and eat their lunch.
Why would I pay monthly to play games I bought and can play without paying monthly? Unless the hardware is just subscription only - but that can fuck off too.
Because unless you’re dropping $1500+ for a gaming rig, you can’t play them. If you have a gaming PC, it wouldn’t be a good deal for you. If you don’t have a gaming rig, but you have an Xbox, you could, with my idea, take advantage of Steam’s deeper sales and giveaways, and be able to play them on the Xbox.
If you buy a lot of games, you save a lot of money by buying from Steam/GOG, so it would be worth it. Especially for those of us who don’t have gaming rigs.
1.5k? Pretty sure half my games would run on a semi decent iGPU. Just look at the steam decks popularity.
