It really was obnoxiously enjoyable
Was it though? I could see it if you changed the audio track to a language you don’t understand, because it does have a lot going for it; the production design and costumes, set design and construction are all outstanding, sound design is still some of the best there’s ever been (especially when it came to modernizing legacy sfx), obviously the vfx and novel approaches to cinematography (yes, including the lens flares) are all great, etc etc.
But literally every last thing about the story is stream of consciousness, fever dream nonsense, which in any other franchise might be forgiven, but for Star Trek of all things to have such boneheaded threads of anti-science magical thinking, noxious xenophobia and childish cruelty is unforgivable. It’s a top to bottom garbage script, ironically produced with one of the most talented film crews in sci-fi movie history, which for my money anyway, makes it even more tragic and hard to enjoy.

Very hyped for shore leave episode now, the crew has earned it!

TechnologyI’ve been using an app called Coax (Apple only, which will disappoint some) to do this with my Plex library and it’s glorious. Beautiful retro styled schedule grid, automated channel/schedule creation, even has a weather channel with Jazz playing. I’m rediscovering stuff that’s been sitting idle on my server for years because it’s just fun to see what’s “on” and be like, ‘Oh yeah, let’s check that out for a few minutes’ and then I end up watching the whole thing.
Fortunately, Oregon seems to have figured out how to handle this. This was in my feed, literally right under this post.

And while they’re not current, I recently discovered a late 90’s early-aughts rap group called The Coup that was basically writing the soundtrack for everything happening now (which just goes to show that these issues have been with is for a long time).
A few notable tracks that spring to mind: - Kill My Landlord - 5 million ways to kill a CEO - and while the title doesn’t express it, the anti-billionaire track Pimps is as fucking hilarious as it is biting. These guys were clowning Trump back when he was just a simple civilian bigoted moron rapist.
Can’t believe I didn’t hear about this group back in the day, they’re one of my favorite discoveries in recent memory.

The showrunners had said from the very beginning they had the outline and knew how long it would go. (Also the end of this interview more recently.)
Producers don’t sign checks for shows that expensive without knowing what they’re signing up for.
I’d also say the regardless of debates on the quality (seems like audiences split pretty hard after S1), the general direction of the story was extremely clear and the entire inversion arc was almost complete. Anyway, regardless of if it were good or not, being robbed of a conclusion of any kind is infuriating.
And the fact that HBO canceled it one measly season away from being about to finish the story. I’ll never pay a cent for HBO again.
I remember watching the movie and then immediately thinking, “Why the fuck did I just watch that? And why the fuck did anyone make it? This is not a story that needs to be given attention.”
Fall of Icarus would make a great album title, and the photo could be the cover art!
