Pc.
- more utility than just games. Code, write, etc.
- a backlog of games going back like 40 years
- will still be usable and with new content for years. A PC today will probably be able to play some hot new indie games in 15 years.
- no subscription fee for online play, generally
- more free games
- many games are cheaper
- broader range of input choices
- emulators and the high seas, if that’s your thing
Sometimes they give some people a few crumbs so they’ll fight other poor people instead of the rich.
Why would they lower costs when they can just not do that?
Having these self driven cars run by private profit driven companies seems like a bad idea. Infrastructure, which this is trying to be, should not be private.
Displays of wealth in a world with so many sufferiny disgusts me
I was thinking the other day about how a friend once pointed out someone carrying a handbag that sells for $10,000. I’m like… send that person straight to therapy and community service. That’s so much money on something a $100, tops, bag could do.
It’s not that good.
Much of a CEO’s role is schmoozing with other rich assholes. AI can’t do that. Maybe once it can buy hookers and blow.
We might be at an impasse. I just don’t think someone is entitled to a decade long lock down on their ideas. If you don’t want other people involved, don’t publish. Fan fiction has been part of human culture for like all of it. The idea that you can’t profit from it is comparably modern.
basically just harkens back to what i said back up there. what about an author that does great world building, their world never becomes popular or makes money, and then someone else 7 years later sees their world building and makes their own story within that world and makes all the money and fame from it while the original author gets nothing?
Tough? Like in your scenario the work is just wasted and no one reads it. That’s no better.
Many endeavors fail.
just don’t want to pay people who are profiting off someone else’s ideas but not compensating them for it.
That’s how humanity has worked for thousands of years. Disney didn’t write snow white. They made a new work based on it.
Well, yeah. Just look outside. Capitalism has made a handful of people uncontrollably wealthy and irreparably damaged the world, while leaving many people either in outright poverty or barely holding on.
You gotta put the > before the text to make it a quote, not after.
tell that to a guy like george RR martin, or JK rowling, or whoever created dune that “okay, it’s been seven years. now everyone can make stuff in your own universe that you spent your entire time world building and can make money off your universe without your permission. you had 7 years, your time to make money on it is up. if someone can make a better story in your universe it’s theirs now for them to make profit on.”
I would be happy to tell these extremely rich people so. I don’t see this as a problem. That’s how human creativity worked for centuries.
my claim is that people wouldn’t create as much and it would encourage more spinoffs of existing ideas,
I just don’t think that’s true and I don’t think there’s a reason to believe it’s true. Go look at fan fiction. There’s whole thriving, rich, communities of it. Fascinating ideas and remixes. Almost all of it violates copyright. But it’s creative and people love it. Some of those authors go on to write their own original work. Why would you want to kill all of that?
I really don’t think it “fucks over” the author. They got their art out there. They inspired people. They can still sell copies. I don’t think they are entitled to a lengthy copyright.
The scenario where someone gets fucked over, in my mind, is they write something original and a megacorp scoops it up without payment or attribution. That’s something a short copyright could protect. So when some nobody writes a cool story or song, Disney can’t use their massive budget to capitalize on it without paying the author anything. That’s why I would accept a short copyright.
I’d rather break up megacorps and not have ultra-wealth, but that’s a separate topic.
You were saying people wouldn’t create without copyright. And yet, copyright didn’t exist for much of humanity. Therefore, copyright is not necessary for people to create. If it was, they wouldn’t have created all the stuff they did.
Slavery and other horrors are irrelevant
Edit:
do you think after george RR martin released his first book 7 years after that everyone else could make their own ASOIAF books, movies, tv shows, etc without having to get permission or compensate george in any way? i feel like this is shafting the creator
7 years is plenty of time to profit.
And they can still profit by creating new work, or selling people the authentic copy. People go see live music despite video existing. People buy designer bags despite bootlegs existing.
If anyone can write a spiderman comic, then the ones that are the best will presumably do the best.
That feels like a system with misaligned incentives.
would just lead to people creating constant spinoffs of other peoples creative ideas without an original thought of their own and without rewarding the original creator. there has to be some incentive to make something of your own, and right now that incentive is ownership and monetizing of that IP.
Counter argument: the entirety of human history where people created, without a system of copyright.
Furthermore, I would accept a short duration of copyright (perhaps 7 years) as a compromise. The current length is far too long.
Edit: and another thing! Disney! You think they made up Snow White?
Copyright is a very new concept compared to how long humanity has been telling stories. The idea that “oh no someone will make fan fiction!” is silly. That’s how shit was. People would take stories and change them. It’s not theft. It’s how you get Shakespeare.
Sometimes I resent being straight, where monogomy is basically the only option
There’s plenty of poly/enm people. I know people who have success there, and had some myself.
Counter intuitively, it lead to fewer dates for me than monogamy. There’s a smaller pool of people. I’m still rolling the same dice trying to clear DC 18, but when I had it filtered to poly I was making like one check a week, versus like two a day.
Used to, before the pandemic. Went to one that enforced silence and kicked people out who used their phones. But wages are down while corporate bullshit is up, so fuck ‘em.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kansas_experiment
The Kansas experiment was a name given to a controversial and widely noted tax-cutting policy/agenda of Kansas Governor Sam Brownback that began with Brownback signing a bill cutting state taxes (Kansas Senate Bill Substitute HB 2117), in May 2012,[1][2] and ended with the Kansas legislature’s repeal of the bill in June 2017. It was one of the largest income tax cuts in
Despite its record and the fact that “many experts regard the Kansas tax cuts as a failure”, the 2017 Republican tax cuts (Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017) had some of the same elements of Brownback’s policy, and “many Republicans still embrace the ideology” behind the Kansas tax cuts.[2]
Conservatives don’t learn shit.
Why would you use another privately owned platform that’s likely to enshittify?
I do not understand the mind of that kind of copycat.
Cool. Been on Linux for a couple years. No real complaints. No tinkering. It just works and is a boring-ass plasma kde desktop environment.
Yeah, we all do it. But some things are much harder to navigate (eg: driving a car when you live in a car-first hell is hard to avoid) vs just not using Twitter.
Rich people and capitalism are a bigger problem that arguably is easier to solve, though, to your point.
RetroFed
It’s so frustrating how people just don’t care about things. Especially if they’re complicated or indirect.
They’ll be like “but there’s funny memes there” and I’m like there’s humor in all sorts of places. Blank stare.
Fuck em. Lots of free media out there. My local library has all sorts of stuff, and that’s not even considering what’s out on the high seas.
One time I was on the subway and my friend motioned at a lady sitting with a handbag on her lap. Friend asked how much I thought that bag sold for. It was a pretty basic looking bag, maybe real leather, a zipper. I said maybe a few hundred. They were like no, it’s {some brand}, probably five figures.
Anyone who spends five figures on a bag that’s not like a magical bag of holding should immediately be sent to therapy and community service.
ICE and all of their supporters need to go.
There’s a lot of ghost jobs. Should probably be illegal to knowingly post a ghost job, with penalties to the tune of “pay a year’s salary to every applicant”
Reddit could have just continued on a place with good user generated content. Could’ve been profitable and popular. Instead they shitted it up. So fuck it. I hope their leadership suffers.
Feel like the racist guy shouldn’t just be walking around and sleeping peacefully at night.
Fuck. Fuck all this AI slop.
Google is run by assholes and fools. They should be broken apart.
I mostly read lounged on the couch, long ways. Sometimes in bed with pillows to prop me up.
I mostly read ebooks and highlight passages in them. For physical books sometimes I’ll take a picture of an important page I want to reference later.
Not sure what you mean by “hard books”. I do have a bad habit of reading too quickly and not fully retaining everything. The last book I (re)read was House of Leaves. A classic. Highly recommend.
Interesting. Bundles of this size are a little overwhelming for me- anyone want to call out what they think are the highlights of what’s included?
Neat.
Side note: it’d be nice if they had a better explanation and examples of what some of these are. “Other annoyances” is vague! “Chat widgets” might be live chat?
I’ve lived in both but I don’t remember anything distinctive about NJ pizza. The main thing about NY pizza for me is I can walk in, get a slice, and eat it on foot. Though I lived in the NJ suburbs, where “on foot” wasn’t really a thing.
Capitalism. The minority of people own stuff and call the shots.
I personally think a short copyright might be acceptable. A couple years. And following that open use with attribution.

Went a couple months without much beyond form letter “we have decided to move forward with candidates who better align with our needs” rejections. Got one internal apply going now for the sad mega Corp I’m at (but a better team, I’m told), and one referral got a call back.
I think referrals are still the way to go. Sadly even that only goes so far.
I assume this is trying to do a racism.
Making fun of NJ is like “omg epic bacon” or saying “I’m so random”. It’s really passé and unoriginal. It’s extra funny when the speaker is from, like, Mississippi or someplace that’s actually bad.
There might be some ambiguity in the word “bad” there. Some people might use it to mean “uncomfortable” and others to mean “unacceptable”. Sort of like a boolean AND - for some people, for something to be good it must be functional AND ethically acceptable. If it fails either check, they’re “bad”. Humans are notoriously imprecise with their language. Some people might split apart the different components of good/bad, and acknowledge that the hypothetical horror shoes are comfortable, but that’s moot because they wouldn’t willingly wear them.
As I said, the line is in a different place for everyone. You’re entitled to hold that belief. I’m glad we’re on the same page about the baby skin shoes, though.
I can see that reading, but I think the joke would work the same with him bringing home any threatening partner. If it was an orc lady, the dialogue could be the same.
I mean, yeah, I think there’s some low grade homophobia in here but not malice.
