Questions, answers and conversations

Yeah, your post where commenters were musing about how “naturally consensual” 14 year olds are is what made me block the shitpost community on Lemmy.world.

I may not be popular in the meme communities, but I call out shit constantly. Y’all just want to be able to have your casual misogyny without any pushback at all.

You’re allowed to post it here, but people are allowed to respond to it as well.

Is it perfect? Nope.

Is it useful? Yep.

Is it fun to play with? Most definitely!

I keep a professional distance to all my co-workers regardless of age, gender, title or experience.

I don’t even know which is worse; working with people you like or people you don’t. Both have their challenges in time.

I’d definitely stay clear of any clique mentallity. Best to stay assertive with those sorts of people.

Or in sports terms. Don’t get dragged into their drama. They can keep that shit game on their side of the court. You focus on the ball.

Yeah, I do worry about that too. LLMs are good about putting together a professional looking document but they also tend to be verbose and with vague wording. I’m on a project now suffering because the design was really not reviewable. Now we’re trying to work on it and it’s really obvious the design was all bs

Hello fellow codger. I, 55m, work amongst much younger people. Here’s my take: It’s not about age.

People “who only care about gossip” - well, there’s as many of those in the older age group. Age sometimes teaches people cunning, so they’re less overt, but they’re sure as hell gossiping about you and everyone else when they find a friendly ear. IME, the only difference age brings to work relationships is a different set of cultural references. They’ll talk about stuff you’ve never heard of - and you’ll be doing the same to their ear.

It sounds like you’re new to this workplace, and possibly working with people of differing ages and experiences. That’s fine, I’ve been there too. (Full career change in my late 40s). It’s scary, uncertain and confusing - but just dive in.

In any group, there’ll be a few people you get on with, some you don’t, and the majority somewhere in the grey middle. Some will go out of their way to help you some of the time. Some won’t. Some are annoying, some aren’t. If someone offers to help and does the opposite - that’s a useful thing to learn about them.

If you’re annoyed by them, then much of the resolution lies within you. Mentally close them out, or find ways to deal with those feelings. This can’t be the first time you’ve been in this situation?

Oh yes… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uk3A41U0iO4 (keep watching. Is relevant.) [… and oddly relevant to my earlier suggestion list that also included emacs]

The Ford one made me think of a good one from old Top Gear:

LOTUS - Lots Of Trouble, Usually Serious

I’m not a manager so it’s not my problem. As long as work is begijg done who cares about the rest of the time.

If someone says they will help but don’t, bring it up in the next team meeting until you get the actual help.

Reminds, there’s mypaint too.

Yeah. Krita, mypaint, I neglect, living 99% of the time in gimp.

some suggestions for your consideration in order of empowerment and learning curve first,

  • AWK
  • ffmpeg (~ & imagemagick ?)
  • bash, zsh, or fish
  • kew (it’s just a really simple nice tui music player, no fuss). (… “Am I the only fun one in Digit’s list here?” – kew)

n_n

Some other things that sprang to mind, (generally tending to more gui things, some distro/packagemenent things)… audacity/tenacity, fontforge, gimp, gentoo and portage, bedrocklinux and brl, peertube self hosting, forgefed self hosting, suckless.org’s tools, CRUX or KISS/Carbs, just playing around in stellarium, playing around in pioneer space sim, learning how to evade humanity’s detection as an ai in the game called singularity, ;3

Oh… Here’s an idea for you… Learn a text editor.

Think it’s not fun?

Depends on which text editor you pick, and how much the fun suits you. … Emacs has so many things (including games, like tetris and doctor). Even neovim has some extra things (~ opencode runs on neovim… tho it’s not the same, lol). Or maybe you want something simpler, like nano, mcedit, or fin (I wrote fin, don’t use it, it’s scruffy… and only able to do that from learning some of the things mentioned, and more).

Yay for learning. Yay for asking for what other fun things to learn. Good post. Good question. … Sorry my answers were not better. Heh. Caught off guard, answered just what first sprang to mind. n_n Doubtless many other more fun things exist.

The problem will be the childish ones that claim they’re willing to help only when the manager is present to do the opposite when he disappears, something that has happened before.

Make sure to be transparent on who did what, don’t take any responsibilities for others. They will either get into trouble and learn to cooperate from there on or not. Things might work out fine anyway, just focus on your own part. Prepare interfaces / connecting parts to their work if they can’t manage to do it, but don’t do their work.

Then there are the immature ones who only care about gossip. I don’t like working with them.

Stay polite but honest. Don’t engage in topics you don’t like. Tell them you don’t care about other peoples alleged / perceived lives. Keep things work related if there is nothing else to talk about and just stay silent otherwise. This won’t be the last time you’ll have to work with people you don’t like or have nothing in common with. Maybe y’all will still find something to talk about after some time.

owh wow havent tried that combo, but. sorry, do you mean chicken wings,, any sauce for the wings?

Stay focused on the work, don’t deal with the immature ones unless you have too. One year will go by very fast.

I like numbers and was really tempted to go all in into this rabbit hole but this ends up being a lot of work and stress if you try to maintain it manually. It’d be ideal to be able to automate imports from your banking apps but those don’t really exist, or depend on some possibly sketchy 3rd party services that I dont trust with my finances

OP If you want the best of both worlds try WAFRN. It’s both ATProto (bluesky) and activitypub (mastodon, etc) so you can engage with both communities. It also has some pretty robust blocking features for removing content you don’t want to see.

We need to learn from past mistakes.

When Jeff Bezos buys bluesky in 2035 and change its name to BlueDildo what?

I think there’s probably still room creatively, especially as a hobby.

I sort of see it as the opposite with software though, that popular options are bloated data-wise (and cost) and simple usage-wise, other options are small-ish data-wise but less user-friendly. It seems like the middleground (low data+easy-to-use) is less likely to exist, particularly for techniques that aren’t as shiny/new. In some cases, it really does seem like certain workflows don’t exist. (or perhaps for some things that we’ve seen before, implementations were always in-house rather than something that existed in a usable editor)

Which isn’t to say stuff like that will be easy, maybe doable with limitation and if libraries can take you half-way there.

Time brings acceptance, because you can only be freaked out by something for so long

What a coincidence! That’s also what your mom said.

Ok, I will see myself out now.

Greatly recommend this approach:

  • install Evil right away for humanly motion keys

  • perhaps install Org-mode if you’re still shopping around for the perfect notes app

  • spend a few months crafting your own configuration

  • backup your whole configuration, install Doom Emacs instead, port extra stuff from your conf on top of Doom

  • finally enjoy proper quality of life in Emacs

Second this. Not because I have experience in it, but because I’m learning it this week so I could have a friend 3D print a part for my car, as I’m deleting some original equipment and now need something that doesn’t exist as a spare part.

I don’t know, I’ve been on mastodon for like 8 years now and have never had any problem connecting with other people.

I think you need to mutually follow a lot of people before it starts working (like, a thousand or more).

“This game becomes fun after 51st boss” energy.

Can you proofread this and update it? That was impossible to follow.

Sure. Right now, everyone has to make a trade-off between accepting a smaller network and engaging with corporate garbage designed to create rage and clicks. Personally I’m happy to sit on the smaller network and contribute a bit and wait for it to build naturally. That’s why I’m here on Lemmy too.

I do never agree with anything that is described in such a more than 1000 times for sure didn’t you even realize what you have tried to make us endure here and weirdly knotted but still logically incomplete and you probably won’t notice when my question is over because it isn’t one at all too complicated manner.

My husband snores so I can help here, eventually you will tune anything out, with enough exhaustion.

Mastodon is not a viable alternative if you actually want to follow people. I tried to use it multiple times but almost nobody I care about is there. I’d love for Mastodon to be more popular but it just isn’t.

I think I do understand what you’re saying, but I’m still, like, “what?” 🤨

Existential things are my interest. I dwell in the crisis till my ego dissolves.

I’d say GIMP for photo editing would be a good one to learn. It’s come in handy in a pinch both at home and at work when I’ve needed something done up real quick.

I thought so too. KDEnlive a solid base that is used by many FOSS youtubers akin to Veronica Explains. It’s capable of things up to rotoscoping/chromakey deletion, it also closely resembles how most video editors work, except maybe for trendy node-based tinkering in effects - that would be covered in full by Blender/Godot further down the line. Example project: make a short explanatory vid about one of the tools already learned.

It’s fine but discovery still sucks and genrally it’s very low effort. I’d recommend spending the first few hours finding the right profiles to follow as the general post quality is very low but there are gems worth finding.

I really like openscad! It maps well to how I think through modeling a part. I was just using it yesterday

If you’re signing up for ATproto, I’d avoid Bsky and go for Blacksky instead. Although on Blacksky, the two public PDSes you can pick are cryptoanarchy.network and myatproto.social.

Also, Bsky has been trying to push ID lately while Blacksky isn’t yet, but there’s the chance that Bsky corporate could start to get hostile against Blacksky and other third parties and start to block them at some point.

I don’t believe in a higher power, but I had a moment that kinda feels that it could have been. Around 2004, I was driving on the interstate at 2 in the morning to pick up a friend who was stranded. I was in the leftmost lane and no one else was on the road nearby. For whatever reason, I shifted over to the middle lane without really thinking about it. Not 30 seconds later, what I presume was a drunk driver came barreling down the road heading the wrong way in the lane I had just moved over from. It didn’t even register to me what had happened until the car had passed me. I had my ex in the car next to me and we both just kind of freaked out when the realization hit.

CRRCSim (RC plane simulator)

Learn how to slope-soar a glider.

Best with the photo mountain scenery added in.

In many distro repositories too.

Same - I paid them a down payment and they stole it dude

Blacksky is an option. But the point about the platform not being meaningfully decentralized still stands. Your current options with [*]sky are equivalent to only having the option of using either mastodon.social or mstdn.jp, the two biggest mastodon social platforms.

On the Mastodon side, you have the option of nearly 9k servers to choose from.

More that RNJesus? No.

PosteRazor, is super easy to learn.

It can make wall posters, by printing the A4 segment sheets, and then gluing them together.

PS2, GameCube, N64 hands down. Saturn was alright, Dreamcast was ahead of it’s time and cost a boat load. OG Xbox was alright, but beyond Halo….meh. IMO.

As a TA, I loved it when students actually showed up. They had better questions than during class, and they always did better in class in the end. Office hours are one of the great college cheat codes. 90% of office hours are spent wishing someone would just show up…

The only time I ever crave a beer is with some wings. I love wings but rarely eat them for many reasons including having to basically shower in the sink afterwards thanks to the beard (lol) but man that combo will sooth me quickly.

If all you want is to make documents and you don’t have the constraints of academic publishing, I would rather recommend Typst. It’s way more modern and less painful.

Microslop, crApple, Scroogle (i know its from that lame MS commercial)

Pc.

  • more utility than just games. Code, write, etc.
  • a backlog of games going back like 40 years
  • will still be usable and with new content for years. A PC today will probably be able to play some hot new indie games in 15 years.
  • no subscription fee for online play, generally
  • more free games
  • many games are cheaper
  • broader range of input choices
  • emulators and the high seas, if that’s your thing

I’m polyamorous. Working out calendars 2-3 weeks in advance gets very tiring.

A lot of straight cis men seek out gay trans men, as if we are just tomboys. Getting called “she”/“her,” dealing with their insecurities about being attracted to a man, a general denial of who I am…

But I’ve also just seen IBM and broadcom be used a verb for price hikes or rug pulls.

Camus is great if your life is free from suffering, sucks if it isn’t. There’s a reason poor people are more religious.

They’re alive!

My wife was recently on vacation and, historically, pets die when she’s absent. Duke, the first dog I got as an adult, died the day she got back … Technically not from vacation, but from a work trip.

Because we had a kid, I had Newbie put down while my wife was packing up the previous house and the kid was with her. That’s the only dog I’ve ever chosen to put down. I think it was the right thing to do but it still hurt. Even typing this is hard. Please ignore the tears running down my cheeks. She was a damned good dog.

Remi died while the wife and kid were at the beach.

We have three cats, two of whom have been around longer than my wife. The wife and kid went to a family reunion this weekend. They left Friday and came back today. Saturday the older two cats were absent for the morning feeding. I wasn’t convinced they would still be breathing when I found them.

However, so far as I can tell, they’re immortal … Or at least making the most of their nine lives.

edit: Newbie’s health was failing. I didn’t just decide she needed to go.

Take it one step farther and learn podman and quadlets. It’s like learning docker/compose, but it’s also rootless if you do it from userspace.

Tiny Old Man Dog is asleep in his crate. He snores. He ate this morning, took his meds, used his pee pad, all good things. He’ll get more wet food this evening, with chicken powder sprinkled on top so he actually eats. (he’s lost his appetite in his senior years, and I want him to not lose any more weight. He weighed 10# as a preteen. He weighs 8# now. Dude, eat your food!)
