Holy hell, that abstract is written like an undergrad with a thesaurus trying to expand its length. I know theoretical physics has a lot of specifics that call for precise language, but god it was a pain to read through.
The title for the paper is radically different. From my understanding, the title (on lemmy) is misleading. People often forget that a ‘thing’ is different than an image of a thing. The classic example is this:
Imagine standing in a perfectly circular room, dead center. The room has a radius of one light-second. If you have a flashlight, point it at the wall, and then spin the flashlight so it rotates 2pi radians in one second, the spot of light on the wall has just traveled approximately 6.28 light-seconds on the wall in one second, breaking the speed of light, ooooooh! Except nothing has actually traveled faster than the speed of light. The photons from the flashlight all traveled at the speed of light to hit the wall.
Unless the article has a lot more information on the massless, not energy, no information ‘thing’ they are describing, it sounds like the “holes” in the light are more akin to the image of something than a thing themselves.
Yeah, it just sounds like a shadow on a wall moving faster than the speed of light. Or the dot cast by a laser pointer on the wall.

I’m confused, isn’t the lack of information also information?
I think this means once a stream of photons is established it is theoretically possible to somehow perturb them in a way that a detectable lack of photon can be transmaiited along the beam FTL. This could be huge in 50 years.
Doesn’t mean much for travelling FTL, but information could be transmitted FTL in a vacuum?
I’m picturing Mars to Earth communication where we beam lasers back and forth.

No, there’s no FTL communication here unfortunately. The speed of light puts a hard limit on anything, even information.

This reminds me of It Was Nothing - Really by Theodore Sturgeon about the little spaces in perforations between toilet paper being discovered to be indestructible. It went on to make industries out of the ’nothing’. In real life, could these vortices be used to propel us faster than light?
Probably not, but it’s fun to think about.
Doesn’t the position, speed and vector of two vortices count as information? And here I thought that annihilation indicated mass and/or energy.
Finally, do the light vortices have their own speed constant that it cannot break?

Wouldn’t the darkness inside the light’s speed be relative to the light itself? Think of that example of the person walking back and forth on a moving train while an observer outside watches the train pass by.
