Explanation: Henry II, King of England, once, in a fit of rage, cried out “What miserable drones and traitors have I nourished and promoted in my household, who let their lord be treated with such shameful contempt by a low-born clerk!” (often shortened to the post title) after an argument with the archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Becket, whom he had clashed with previously. Several of his knights interpreted this outburst not as grousing, but as an incitement to action. Wink wink, nudge nudge.

… so they ambushed Thomas Becket in a cathedral, resulting in Becket’s death when he refused to come quietly.

This was not Henry II’s actual intention, and landed him (and the four knights) in a lot of hot water - more than just enduring one ‘turbulent priest’ would have caused!



Should’ve headed off the problem, err, nipped it in the bud… uhhh
