This isn’t a clever loophole – – this is Trump making sure that only billionaires can profit, and the rest of us are all fucked

Only his billionaire bosses can profit. Lol

“Free enterprise for me and none for thee.”

The Best of Both Worlds!

I love a national Monopsony.

Also… Archive.is link

Monopsony

Learned a new word today! 🥳

All of the cost, none of the equity. Just as capitalism demands.

Distributed burden, with the profits for the few.

What did we do with the railroad barons again? And where’s their privatised cutting-edge tech??

silly goose, corporations make their own rules

Yeah, but do corpos have value?

yeah… sure… so very worried about “national security” that security risks can only be used by government employees, big corporations, and in federal buildings but not in private homes… yeah sure… that’s secure. Really feeling the security of the nation here… NOT.

At least til recently, Waymo here in California was using modified Jaguars. IDK if they started out as Jaguar EV’s or if they were ICE cars converted by Waymo. But they are everywhere in SF and also seen in other parts of the region.

They are Jaguar I-Pace EVs. They were natively EV to begin with. Waymo actually purchased large chunks of them through 2026, but with Jaguar basically committing suicide they needed another vehicle to work with.

Remember. Waymo is Google.

oh i love protectionism for the rich and a middle finger for the peasants

Does this have to do with safety regulations or something? Like what is the reasoning behind it? Because I heard these Chinese cars dont have good safety regulations

The reasoning is to protect us companies from having to invest in better factories and design, any manufacturer’s cars meet whatever safety standards they are designed to meet.

US companies are just a small fraction of auto sales in the US and two of the three make most of their money selling trucks and big SUVs which aren’t even in the same vicinity as Chinese EVs competition wise. Stop spreading disinformation.

Except that’s the reason.

Why because that’s how you guys feel and because you state the claim with confidence (but nothing else)?

The auto industry in the US is already dominated by foreign brands and has been for quite a long time. It doesn’t make any sense as being the reason because that ship sailed long ago, and as I already described, two of the three remaining US automakers don’t even bother competing in the segment that Chinese EVs operate in, so what US company does it protect apart from Tesla which makes up a whopping 3% of the entire market?

It doesn’t matter if the competitor is a gas car or not, an EV on the market is a car on the market, at a set price on the market.

There are no way, no EV for me, nuh uh people just as well as there are EV or nothing people, just as well as there are I just gotta get to work, man people.

what US company does it protect apart from Tesla which makes up a whopping 3% of the entire market?

All of them. No EV? Factor gas into the monthly payment. EV? Consider the gas as part of the monthly payment.

Quit building fake goal posts, a car is a car, and any customer will buy one if it suits their budget. If a Chinese car suited their budget, they’d buy it.

you haven’t really address that the US is already dominated by foreign brands though so it doesn’t make sense to exclude china specifically unless there are other reasons beyond just keeping the US companies dominant. TryingToBeGood cited security concerns which i think is probably the more likely reason.

China makes EV SUVs, they’re just as awful as their American counterparts despite being slightly better for the environment.

But the part that the big auto manufactures fear is that they would destroy the market; they understood awhile ago that every wagon they sell is a lost SUV sale, which has a way higher margin, every sedan a lost sport-crossover sale, every minivan a lost 4dr pickup.

Dealers hate EVs because they lose so much on servicing, and dealership owners are one of the most chuddy groups.

They are supposed to be as good or better than cars made by the US Big 3. Then once the new sodium ion batteries come out, they will be far safer.

only to some extent, it’s not like the safe models aren’t being blocked. I think for example, the BYD Dolphin was redesigned to meet australian compliance.

Chinese companies are willing to redesign for saftey, but the government of course has other plans.

Basically some chinese cars by their direct chinese design, might not pass US safety standards. However china has shown they are willing to modify designs to enter the market. the only reason why they aren’t in the US market is because the government wont let them. Corporate has been using chinese evs (and trucks) and buses, for awhile now.

It has to do with the cars talking to each other and perhaps eavesdropping on other vehicles, etc.

https://www.bis.gov/press-release/commerce-finalizes-rule-secure-connected-vehicle-supply-chains-foreign-adversary-threats

Washington, D.C. – Today, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) announced a final rule prohibiting certain transactions involving the sale or import of connected vehicles integrating specific pieces of hardware and software, or those components sold separately, with a sufficient nexus to the People’s Republic of China (PRC) or Russia.

BIS and its Office of Information and Communications Technology and Services (OICTS) have found that certain technologies originating from the PRC or Russia present an undue and unacceptable risk to U.S. national security. Today’s action represents the culmination of a months-long regulatory process to design, seek public input on, and ultimately finalize a measure to protect drivers and passengers on American roads.

Where did you hear that bullshit?

My BYD has the highest rating possible

I don’t want any of the Chinese EVs either.

Why?

Is it stupidity, or good old-fashioned racism?

The second one requires the first.

They’re ugly and over complicated

I don’t think a single person has actually been to China or understands what it’s actually like beyond tiktoc propaganda.

You all are crying for shit cheap EVs, then if you get them you’re going to cry that your house burns down and it’s Trunps fault. I would be as happy as the next person if the orange flavored dip shit was gone, but you’ve created a no win situation

I find it also amazing that people are willing to forego actually paying people enough to have a living so long as they save money. China is a COMMUNIST country, and reguardless how you feel about it, they apress the fuck out of their people.

HAHAHAHAHAH

Edit: am in China rn, it’s even better than the TikTok propaganda. Would live here in a heartbeat instead of the racist and islamophobic West that bombed my country and called me a Muslim scum when I fled to their so called humanitarian safe havens.

Comments from other communities

Laws are for poor people.

Rules for thee, but not for me

So cheap cars are out there and the corporations are grabbing them all up before the citizens. Now that capitalism is in it’s last death throes they need to amass even more power and control before it all explodes and comes crashing down.

Article is paywalled but the reason Google can get away with it is because they’re getting them shipped without any connectivity.

Self driving cars

Shipped without connectivity

Weird

Also, can I buy a new car without telemetry? I guess I know the answer to that already.

It has connectivity, its just added by Waymo after it arrives on shore.

Obviously Google install their own connectivity.

Why don’t Chinese manufacturers do the same? Sell cars without connectivity, make updates or whatever available on a website.

It is hardware. The embargo is on the connectivity silicon used in China because it is full of Chinese backdoors. Unlike the chips made elsewhere that have US backdoors

Great question.

So Chinese automakers cannot import because they rather stay out of market than turn off connectivity?

That’s the bullshit the US government wants you to believe. They need an excuse to force you to keep buying shitty trucks.

Yes they wrote it into law to deceive you!

Seems that way.

Can Americans buy 2nd hand Chinese EVs or will these then become recycling nightmares as a giant outfit cuts every possible corner in a very loosly regulated area?

You can import them after they’re 25 years old but good luck getting parts or repairing them.

Good luck finding a 25 years old EV.

I mean I don’t think 25 year old Chinese EVs exist. This would be a hypothetical future.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Wow. That’s pretty messed up.

We should ban Amazon and Walmart reselling Chinese as well as Chinese cars

We should work to either innovate or partner with Chinese manufacturers when it comes to EV technology.

good luck with that in your republican america

Step 1: new constitutional convention in order to replace the federal government, which has been in lawmaking deadlock for about 16 years.

Yes but stop believing the Dems are better.

They ARE better. They’re not good, but they are better than the subterranean bar Republicans set.

Does it make you feel better to say that? They’re dogshit. They are as guilty of this situation as the R’s.

Conflating shitty with straight up fascists only serves to help the fascists.

Unpopular opinion: Google’s approach actually makes sense here. The value isn’t the rolling metal box, it’s the autonomous driving stack. If Zeekr can build a high quality EV platform more cheaply, why reinvent it? Buy the best chassis, replace the electronics you don’t trust, and focus engineering effort where your competitive advantage actually is.

I don’t think anyone is thinking Google is in doing the wrong decision. The problem is that Google, and other corporations, work with a set of rules different to normal, not corporate entities, don’t. Like they can bought the most competitive cars on the global markets, while regular Americans are stuck to whatever Ford and GM want to sell them.

Rolling spy machines… No worries in 2027 its coming to American cars.

America: it’s cute when we do it

Illustrates exactly what I was talking about.

Could you imagine being spied on in your own car?? Good thing my car from 2016 with OnStar totally isn’t spying on me!!1!

Good thing my neighbors Tesla cameras aren’t recording my whole neighborhood 24/7!

We’ve had internet connected cars for while now.

Keep calling Chinese tech that as if

  1. US technology isn’t also spying on everyone
  2. All you know of China isnt red scare propaganda you’re stupid enough to fall for
  3. It isn’t 100x better than all shitty overpriced American tech

Enjoy shilling for your overlords while the rest of the world wins :)

US technology isn’t also spying on everyone

Uh thats what I said…

All you know of China is red scare propaganda you’re stupid enough to fall for

Nope seen enough videos of people not able to get out of their BYD and burning to death to know I don’t want them.

I don’t shill for the ccp like you.

Allow me to indulge in the humiliation of Americans.

Let me indulge in watching china/ccp fall. Biggest employer is food delivery and they make shit construction. Belt and roads is being rebuffed by anyone that can’t be bribed or black mailed into a bad deal. Oh and tell me about that dam that just failed, or is it a couple of them?

How many factories have been torched this week by disgruntled workers? 3 gorges dam is also nearing failure, let me guess only 29 lives will be lost. Those that know 30 deaths kick off the ccp. Mass flooding and you want to try to shit on America, lol.

Also Taiwan #1

Just read thru some of your comments and you’re a piece of shit American that wouldn’t be worth the saliva of my spit. You’re the scum of Earth.

lol I nothing you. ccp is shit and you know it. Digging into my posts only tells me how desperate you are to justify your position.

Again Taiwan #1

Well yes, but it’s America so, why not build the spy machines into something that pays the oil industry more.
