One January morning, officials woke up to discover that the dam had been completed by eight beavers. Not only had these beavers built the dam in almost the same spots that humans had originally planned construction, but they effectively saved Czech leadership 30 million korunas (about $1.2 million).

“[Beavers] built the dams without any project documentation and for free,” says Bohumil Fišer, Brdy’s Protected Land Administration (PLA) chief.

No environmental impact study. No permit. Non union workforce. Check the materials - did they use properly rated materials? Cutting corners until it cost nothing. Beavers aren’t even trained engineers!

But seriously this is excellent news. Love nature aligning with human interests. Makes big money want to save animals.

Beavers aren’t even trained engineers

The Brdy dam was intended to restore the area to its natural state, decades after the Czech military built a bypass gully that drained its surroundings.

The beaver version is sure to be more natural than anything a human would manage, with less disruption. Another bonus is that the officials are now incentivised to protect the beavers as they’re maintaining infrastructure.

Wish they got photos.

Self repairing, balance of nature, positive impact upon biodiversity dam. For more or less zero cost to the ape creatures who stupidly think the earth is theirs alone.

Now we’ve just got to train them to put hydroelectric turbines in!

That a damn impressive dam

I don’t give a dam.

That stopped my flow.

Apologies, but where I live it’s 9 o’clog. So it had to be done.

Yeah but they built that one in Sweden.

I recall this was done purposefully in… Wisconson? to help rejuvinate a failing creek bed. The engineers installed pseudo-beaver dams that would only last a season or two so beavers would see these and be all like “What the fuck is this shit?” and fix them up and start living there.

Unfortunately there are parts of Wisconsin where the beavers are met with metal traps around their den. You gotta protect that class I trout stream from nature, I guess

We need to be doing this everywhere

Stalling water helps teplesh freshwater sources underground.

As a species we spent centuries hunting/trapping them, and never tried to repopulate them because they still existed in some places.

Just the pope ruling that they were fish so they could be ate on Fridays had huge consequences for their population.

Paying 1.2 mill for what 8 beavers can do makes you think how much our money actually worth.

Bóbr kurwa… uh, actually bobr kurva, I guess?

They using them foreign scab beavers, I hear.

Them Czech Republic beavers refuse to work non-unionized wetlands.
