How were they supposed to know it was Russian? It was flying after all
Russian stealth technology meets Russian air defence.
Do you think the bomb bay was open perhaps?
You’d think in a war with the same aircraft being used on both sides that the belligerents would invest in some robust IFF.
That happened as well in the Solzhenitsyn book “1917” when the Russians were shooting at the Cossacks, and vice versa. They were both on the same side! I laughed like a loon when I read that, but I was a younger man back then.

Imagine a stealth aircraft being shot down by Russian air defence.
How embarrassing.
The stealth is so good it bamboozled even its own team.
At least this time it wasn’t a civilian airline…
