Solution: Emergency pants snake
submitted by
Transcript: With a picture of a snake in the background, post reads: The chances of a human being bitten by a venomous snake is 1 in 70 thousand.
The chances of a woman being attacked by a man is 1 in 3.
And somehow, your fear of snakes is valid. But a woman’s fear of male violence is dramatic.

Can I just be upset that the snake used in the image is not venomous?
What are the stats about women being bitten by nonvenomous snakes?
That’s a good question. Last time I was near a venomous snake, it was not the least bit interested in me.
Apparently I have poor reading comprehension late at night. Bitten by non-venomous snakes? It has happened a few times. I don’t know how often it would occur though on average.
While I don’t know that stat, I’ve heard from ER/first responder types and the majority of snake bite incidents are
So basically “Hold my beer, watch this” type situations.

Right? Looks like a carpet python
Yea, some kind of python at least.
I don’t think carrying around a venomous snake in your pocket is the solution OP. As badass as that may sound.
Okay, but how great would it be if someone decided to bathroom check me for being trans?
“What’s in your pants???”
“SNAKES!” unzips, medusa level asps pour out

I think you want to get as close to the seventy thousand as you can to ensure at least one is feeling bitey.
I’ve got a neighbor that’ll show up to street fairs and events with their snakes draped on their shoulders. It always looks so cool! Maybe we could work that in somehow and split the difference haha
It certainly raises your odds above 1/70k.

Sometimes it’s preaching to the choir, some times its affirmation. shrug
Edit nvm, saw the debacle. Arf arf little sealion. Can’t have women having communities and discussions now, can we.

Are the mocking and insults in the room with us?

You can view it as a “preaching to the choir” thing if you’d like.
You’re welcome to ignore posts that don’t resonate with you or topics you don’t want to comment on.

And I answered your question with an affirmative. It is kind of preaching to the choir.

I personally view it as bringing up a relevant topic in this group, but that doesn’t mean it’s inaccurate to view it as “preaching to the choir”.

Yes, public forums usually have rules! hence it is recommended you read those before asking questions!
If you don’t know how to read the rules, you don’t have to pretend like you did! Nobody is asking for your opinion, its okay!

Not anymore than you’re trying to troll.
You sure you know where you’re posting?

Rules…
Women only… trans women are women, and transphobic or gender critical talk isn’t allowed. Anyone under the trans umbrella (e.g. non-binary, bigender, agender) is free to decide whether a women’s community is a good fit for them.
Don’t be a dick. No personal attacks, no aggression, play nice.

Am I not? Where have I been mean?

Managing all of this insufferable sealioning must be exhausting.

Why are you in this community?
Then fuckin leave.
Falling appliances kill about twice as many people per year as sharks, but if you’re more afraid of a refrigerator than of a shark, a lot of people will definitely call you dramatic. Proximity is a huge factor in the likelihood of any given occurrence.
I would be scared of a falling refrigerator.
Likewise, I’d be scared of a shark that was right next to me, or a person chasing me with exposed genitalia, but a standing refrigerator or a person behaving normally is unlikely to suddenly fall or assault you. There’s still a chance, and you can and should still be aware of it and take appropriate precautions, but being on edge constantly is going to cause more issues that it solves.
I would be on edge around a falling shark.
This is an extremely inaccurate framing of sexual assault, rape, and violence.
Being aware of one’s surroundings and having some methods of avoidance and self defense are good for everyone.
I’m not saying that that’s the only kind of SA, of course. It was just an easy shorthand for likely imminent SA (and ongoing sexual harassment, for that matter).
Most SA and rape is committed by someone the victim knows, not some stranger chasing people with their dicks out.
Framing the danger women face from men as “a person chasing them with exposed genitalia” is dismissive and inaccurate. 1 in 3 women will face SA or rape in their lifetime. That isn’t an exaggeration.

Are you aware of the community you’re in? We aren’t really worried about men attacking other men in this conversation because this is a women’s only community.
Deleted by moderator
Why include the first then?
You’re being dismissive of a real danger women face.
Deleted by moderator
Men attacking other men isn’t a real danger to women.
We’re in a women’s only community. Must we center men in every single conversation we have?
I can’t find a single statistic to back that up. By the way, you sure you’re in the right community?

Men face a higher overall risk of general physical assault, primarily perpetrated by other men, whereas women experience vastly higher rates of sexual assault and intimate partner violence committed by men. General crime data indicates that men are more frequently victims of public and stranger violence, while women face disproportionate risks of domestic and sexual abuse. [1]

I’ll ask again, since you seem to miss details, you sure you’re in the right community?

Look, I’m all for this message, but these probabilities mean nothing without a reference - 1 in 3 of what? Per day for an average woman? Per year? Per encounter?
Especially the per encounter would be funny, since the average person rarely sees a snake, let alone a venomous one. And I imagine women usually meet at least three men a day…
Statistics show that globally about 1 in 3 (32%) women experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, with the vast majority of these assaults perpetrated by men. [1, 2]
Huh, thanks! Yknow, while this is still a horrible statistic, I’m kind of relieved it’s not 32% a year, that’d amount to a lot higher total
Keep in mind that this only counts the first occurrence. Women in abusive relationships will only count as 1 instance despite experiencing violence and/or sexual assault regularly over a long period of time. This is also likely an underestimate, as not everyone wants to admit that they were the victim of violence, and some of us get gaslit by others so hard that we no longer even believe we’re a victim at all—that it was somehow our fault.
Using probabilities, that would basically lead to 100% of women being assaulted within their lifetime. Its definitely not per year.
In some places it is that high. This is the average world wide.
Without a reference time period we can assume it’s within a lifetime.

The difference is that men only produce metaphorical venom.
The fact is, the man community has done a bad job representing itself to women. They keep choosing bad men like Trump and Musk to represent their community. The man community has completely failed to police its own members. That’s why it has a bad reputation.
You could say we have people like JK Rowling leading the “women’s community”, you can always cheery pick. There are good and bad people of all genders, and not everyone is in a community with others of the same gender as them.
And yet people talk about “the queer community” or “the black community” or “the Deaf community”. If minorities have to put up with that, majorities can put up with it too
I don’t think minorities should have to put up with it either. we are all individuals
If we weren’t scared of snakes we’d get bitten way more often.
And yet women are often admonished for avoiding men.
You missed the second part of that, the being called dramatic part. You sure this is the right community for you?

I’m still terrified of snakes. The human kind and not.
