Ok, the article says it was ‘probably’ a Greek mercenary. They say the helmet was probably from Greece because of the decorations. They say he also had some jewelry with Egyptian goddess Sekhmet and inscription in hieroglyphs talking about Necao I. And the son of Necao I was the first pharaoh that started hiring Greek mercenaries. So it’s possible it was a Greek warrior that fought with Egyptians and later Phoenicians. Interesting life for VI century B.C.
If our original choice of helmets is steel, I’m gonna assume the guys in the other camp have steel too, so I’m not bringing a bronze helmet just to aura farm, however good looking it is.
If I had to choose for combat I’d pick frog-mouth. The angle of the armor really matters so the crossbow bolts bounce off or need to penetrate a more steel for same weight.
Can’t beat the chad aura of the great helm though. Best helm for looksmaxxing when you have a chill garrison position.
I looked it up, frog-mouth sucks unless you’re jousting. You can’t see unless you’re leaning forward, can’t breathe properly etc. Turns out great helm is great.
Not very well but the closer a hole is to your eyes the more you can see out. Breeding holes on the mouth and nose can also help you see downwards. I think most medieval battles were fought in formations, your enemies were in front of you, if someone was allowed to “skip back behind you” something already went really wrong.
I have worn exactly half of these, and since I not that great at tournaments, I can say that KettleHat is the most fun for audience, you will definitely hear every bang like a church bell. The first is quite comfy (never heard of this name though). GreatHelm / Armet / Hounskull - damn bro, you can’t see shit in those while having trouble breathing, and all that for the trade of security :/, no like, feels like you are just a target in the field. Your Bascinet here is extreemely open, it’s a good helmet, but I would like to have some more face cover. Sallet, wore it once, many years ago, memories are fairly good.
The frog-mouth was for jousting primarily, visibility was very poor. I would go with the sallet or kettlehelm because they had better visibility and the flared bottom helps protect from archers or slingers.
it also looks like the easiest one to manufacture of all of those (with the tools of the time). So I guess it’s the cheapest to outfit your soldiers with.
Hounskull. Looks closest to a bird head, so you know I gotta pick it. Would say the one to the left of it, but frogs are not high on my animal tier list.
The great helm wins the looks, but if I actually had to wear one every day, it’d be kettle helm hands down. The rest seem either horribly uncomfortable, hard to see out of, or impossible to move well in.

The Sallet is generally paired with the most badass armors but if we’re only going by helmet looks, I’d go with the Frog-Mouth. It hits different.
It also gets hit different.

Because it’s easier to breathe and more comfortable. It has less protection, but the majority of the time you’re not being stabbed in the face.
Of course that one time you are being stabbed in the face, you’re really going to have some regrets.

I don’t think in warfare they had a rule that if someone made an armor design you can’t use it anymore. So it could as much be just a Phoenician.

I was about to come in here and say the same thing. The great helm is iconic, but the frogmouth is just both cool and practical.

The kettle hat will probably give the best compromise of safety and battlefield visibility. Id imagine it’s what a normal foot soilder would wear.
