The Odyssey happened a long time ago. Before Google Maps. Those were the MapQuest days so things weren’t so accurate and they probably got lost
You’d need to print them out for reference on the journey.

My parents would make me copy down directions by hand.
and even then it was early MapQuest days and I’m sure Odysseus “knew a shortcut”.
Only the best navigators could hold the map quest printout up at dashboard height with one hand and simultaneously watch the road signs, the road, and the turn by turn instructions simultaneously. Many failed and simply drove off the face of the earth.
Oh God that anxiety when the printed directions tell you to turn right in 3.5 miles, and you feel like you’ve gone about 5 but you’re not sure, and maybe that slight split in the road counted as a right turn, and now you should be moving on to the next step but you’re not quite sure…..
I used to have to do food deliveries in a van this way. Just thinking about this still elevates my heart rate.
Also taking a boat overland takes forever, they don’t sail well on land

When I first saw Subaru impresa back in 1998 I was a child, but I could see how special the car was. In fact, during late 90s and 2000s we had some very special cars coming out of rally.

Sounds intentional to have Odysseus suffer and long for home, instead of killing him off quickly. The gods want to be entertained as well.

Sailing with no navigation skills is a risky endeavour, as he amply demonstrated.
No argument there. I’m very glad to have had GPS whenever I’ve been on a boat/ship, but if I absolutely had to, the BSA taught me to use a compass and astrolabe with a current OSRS chart.
Looks like the good old “Didn’t took a right at the crossroads and continued forward instead and then kept on insisting ‘I know the way’” driving problem.

Honda Odyssey is a good choice for that type of trip, but I’m more partial to a Crystler Pacifica, my self.

Turn off highways and watch what happens.
Pretty sure you can still take Rt 13 and Rt 20 most of the way. Going through each town and hitting lights will add some time, sure, but we’re talking an hour, maybe 90 minutes. Odysseus has no excuse.

Everyone’s talking about driving… but you actually can take a boat from Troy to Ithaca. Just take the Erie Canal west until you reach Montezuma, at the confluence proceed to the Cayuga-Seneca Canal, and continue south through Cayuga Lake, and at the end you’ll reach Ithaca.
Easy enough and only takes a couple days at the most. I have no idea why they needed to make some movie about this.

The problem is they turned onto Chrysler Ave instead of hitting 890 off crosstown and once you get on Chrysler Ave it’s impossible to get off and then you’re just stuck at Schenectady.

Troy NY is a fucking psychotic place
It’s a hell of a lot better than it used to be. I remember being scared to be there in the ‘90s. They’ve put a lot of money into cleaning up downtown and the waterfront. Crime has plummeted through the floor. New construction and new restaurants have moved in. These days, it’s nearly the hipster Brooklyn scene of the Capital Region.
It’s easy to lose track of time when you’re having fun.

If you had to push a Greek penteconter the whole way down that freeway, with occasional side trips for special requests, it might take you a long time too.

As I probably will never see either: are any of the places on the map, especially itaka and troy (us) worth a visit?
I’ve been through booth, Overall nothing I’d ever plan a trip specifically for, but everyone has their own interests.
Ithaca - the town itself; no. There’s a lot of cool hiking trails, and some water falls/scenic views nearby if you’re into that. Cornell University is also there, if you like exploring old architecture there’s some neat buildings.
Troy also no, unless you want to visit a town that looks like it hasn’t changed since 1980. It is right next to Albany, the state capitol, so there’s that.
If you don’t get much fall foliage that drive can be majestic in autumn. Otherwise maybe
Neither are well known enough that I, a resident of Texas, knows anything remarkable about them. I’ve heard if Ithaca New York, never heard of Troy.
There are things to do and see in any city or town in America, but I expect that kind of travel is an aquired taste.
(By comparison: the small towns around my city boast things like: peanut festival, strawberry festival, highland games. I expect you could find similar events in Ithaca or Troy, but you would need to enjoy that kind of ‘state fair’ atmosphere. These are things I would drive an hour for but wouldn’t travel out of state unless I was there incedentally already)
I grew up in that area as a kid.
Troy is part of the Tri-city Area of Albany/ Schenectady/ Troy, so it is really part of the State Capital. If you are into state capitals, which generally have a mild historical interest, then there you are.
Ithaca is just another small central NY city. Central NY is one of the most beautiful parts of America to drive through, with old stone houses and rock walls dividing farm fields. It’s not really known for some big historical event or location, it’s just one of those old historical areas where you hit the antique stores, and have meals at quaint little cafes, and stay at a B&B somewhere.
So, delightful for “getting away” and being somewhere pretty? Sounds wonderful.
Ithaca is sort of a charming college town, a lot of art/nature/hippy vibes. If you had to be in central ny for some reason it wouldn’t be a bad place to spend some time. I would not make a special trip for it tho.
