Confirmed: the only divine church is the Church of Emacs.

Stop spreading blasphemy. Everyone knows Jesus uses Vim.

This is why it was considered political.

Maybe unconfigured. Even Jesus Christ wouldn’t be able to handle the Vimscript.

I’d like to take this opportunity to say that lua as a configuration utility is also a chamber of hell that jesus wouldn’t even want the devil to go to.

It’s always amusing when the Neovim users pretend to like Lua. It’s not like Emacs Lisp is the best language out there (it’s not, and I’d much rather Emacs was configured in Scheme, they’re working on it…), but at least it’s a good fit, by design, for configuration.

Where is the third thing? Open source software is left wing ffs. Proprietary software is extremely capitalist/fascist.

You say that as if we don’t continually discover right wingers, fascists, religious bigots, and conspiracy theorists within the community.

You’ll find plenty of bigots and conspiracy theorists in unions, too. Union activity is still left-wing activity.

Fascists and right wingers too?

There are features of Open Source that clearly appeal to several kinds of right wing brain.

In general the far right is also a counter-culture, that benefits from all the kinds of freedoms that the left does.

You want privacy so government doesn’t come for the immigrants, they want privacy so the government doesn’t come for their guns.

You want encryption so the corpos don’t see you unionizing, they want encryption so the cops don’t see them organizing a coup.

You want free speech because information on gender and orientation is not scandalous and dangerous, they want free speech to discuss the proper place of brown people.

You don’t want to use mainstream tech because it’s awful, exploitative and plutocratic, they don’t want to use it because it’s clearly an arm of the jewish deep state.

And let’s not even get into the whole crypto thing. Largely open source, but largely appealing to ancaps and other such funny beasts.

You’ll find plenty of bigots and conspiracy theorists in unions, too.

Yes but the conspiracies tend to be different.

Fascists and right wingers too?

Probably. Certainly republicans, so fascism isn’t a deal-breaker for them.

the conspiracies tend to be different

Plenty of union members believe in the “jewish deep state”, e.g., so I don’t think the conspiracies are that different.

I agree that freedoms can be abused. And, they can certainly be used for right-wing purposes. I also agree that there are plenty of fallacious arguments for freedom, some of which are based on conspiratorial thinking. But, fighting for freedoms of the people and restrictions on the state is always a left-wing activity.

That said, I don’t know where the balance is or should be between solidarity and rejecting intolerance. At the moment, I’m more in favor of protecting marginalized persons by aggressively excluding intolerant people, particularly if their intolerant behavior is well-documented and they still refuse to reject and remediate it. So, I do see the fascists in open source as a problem.

there are plenty of fallacious arguments for freedom, some of which are based on conspiratorial thinking.

There are arguments for freedom based on conservativism. Ancaps also exist. Plus fascists love freedom. Their freedom, and a reeducation camp for you.

And plenty of left-wing activism tries to leverage the state to protect minorities.

What I’m really saying is that it’s not so one dimensional as lefty freedom vs right bootlicking. You want a nice example?

http://dklevine.com/general/intellectual/against.htm

This actual economics book on intellectual property, which advocates for a downsizing of IP rights (both copyright and patents) and is greatly supportive of open source. It was written two decades ago by a couple of relatively conservative Chicago neoliberal economists.

I highly recommend it BTW, there’s very good factual research that more people should be aware of, and high quality discussion. But a lot of the arguments are based on market capitalist principles.

I don’t know where the balance is or should be between solidarity and rejecting intolerance.

I don’t think anyone can tell you for sure. It’s a difficult balance that needs to be constantly negotiated (even just within yourself). Very very often doing good requires evaluating trade-offs between values that are desirable but (to some extent) incompatible.

All Open Source / Free Software is building the commons. Strong copyleft is using the weapons of the state to help the commons stay under collective ownership.

open source software is literally a form of leftism… lol

Technically it was the Free Software movement that was a form of Leftism, and Open Source was Capitalism’s attempt to subsume it once it became apparent that it was capable of producing better software.

can’t have shit in detroit

Jesus would have been too addicted to foot fetish pics online to have any real opinions.

“Dad wrote TempleOS”

Jesus said while opening the laptop with a gazillion stickers on it

Jesus would use Arch Linux

I’m pretty sure that he would use KolibriOS.

thematically, templeOS. but i have a hunch he’s use slackware or debian.

For a bit, but then he would’ve written xbps and built void.

Jesus if he was here today: You’re telling me you’re getting rich and getting divorced? Time to flip some more tables…

Also, if you go by just the “red letters": WTF, why are you eating shellfish and mixing textiles?

He was a Judean from the first century AD, and held a mix of ideas that nobody really does anymore.

sometimes i wonder if jesus today would ask himself if he’d really seen every sin in hell

Do you think modern-day American Jesus’s dad would be a software programer instead of a carpenter?

Maybe a mechanic. It was a humble, low-education kind of job, but still a step up from working the fields. Actually, I guess it could still be construction.

(And FWIW, the original Aramaic word applies to both stone and wood workers, and there weren’t a lot of trees in the Nazareth area)

Sorry for taking your comment way more seriously than of needs to be:

I’d expect Modern Jesus’ dad would be a welder, which is a well paid and respected field in our time that builds things while still being very blue collar.

What’s a more interesting thought is about Mary’s uncle. There’s conspiracy theories about Jesus that stem from the potential relationship between Jesus and his granduncle. You see, Mary’s uncle was a Trader, primarily bringing tin from Britannia (modern day Great Britain) to the heart of Rome - he also founded the first Christian church outside of Palestine (coincidentally in the British Isles). Its thought that Jesus apprenticed under this uncle for a long period of time and through that saw much of the “known world”. It also appears to be the origin of the myth that Jesus didn’t actually ascend to heaven after resurrection, but instead dipped to Britain (leading to my favorite line from A Knight’s Tale: “The Pope may be French, but Jesus Christ was English").

Most of that last part is besides the point. Chances are, that guy would equate to a tech billionaire, and has a result be the main proselytizer one behalf of a modern Jesus figure.

What about Muhammed?

Still a rich, kind of pervy Arab guy.

So, if we’re talking OSs, pirated Windows with a billion viruses.

Comments from other communities

Jesus would upload to BitTorrent, just like how he multiplied bread and fish.

The amount of Bible verses with Jesus absolutely condemning the rich and the wealthy is overwhelming. And it’s not like “oh that’s open to interpretation”. He’s very clear in saying that rich people won’t go to heaven. He’s very clear in what to do with your money (help the poor and sinners).

His entire message is about “living as he lived”. It’s amazing how much Christians in America have been able to completely remove all of those aspects by just saying “well, Jesus did that so we don’t have to. He died living a selfless life. All we have to do is ‘believe the story’”.

It has to be the laziest, most American interpretation of a religion ever. It’s just fucking embarrassing to me though. Like, Im not Christian, but even I am embarrassed by most American Christians.

There are exceptions. But, most Americans use their Christianity as a shield for being shit people. Their religion isn’t even Christianity, it’s capitalism, and worship of wealth. The Christians that go to church every week are much more interested in hearing their pastor talk about how Trump is enacting gods plan. They know talking points for why Trump’s not a pedophile, why Musk is a genius, or why trans kids in sports are destroying the economy. They couldn’t tell you what Jesus said about where Christians should “store their riches”. They’d probably say “a bank or a safe”.

You say that as if liking copyleft isn’t leftist.

This is my first time seeing that term, and that’s pretty great.

The guy who first described the concept of FOSS is the same guy who popularized “copyleft”. Although by his own admission he wasn’t the one who first thought of the pun.

On one hand, glad you like it and congrats on being part of today’s lucky 10,000.

On the other hand, I’m a bit dismayed that the concept remains so obscure that even somebody extensively on Lemmy hadn’t heard of it. It’s a fight for freedom and your comment shows we’re losing harder than I realized.

It has a symbol too! See the F-Droid logo, or:

🄯

I think Richard Stallman talks about it if you read the philosophy of the GNU project

I thought “wait, how does the awesome Pickard Maneuver not already know that?”

But then I remembered instead to say

Congratulations!
You are one of today’s lucky 1000.

I say 1000 rather than 10000 because I estimate only about 1/10 of the people I know know what copyleft is. Then again, I don’t wasn’t to assume you’re American randomly.

I’m very surprised too. I’m on Lemmy a lot. I’ve been using Linux full-time for nearly a year now and learning about open source projects. Somehow that term has just slipped under my awareness until now.

Thinking about it, I came across the terminology when I was deciding what licence to use for a side project I was coding, and it was on the webpages telling me about various licences folks use for open source projects.

So I’ve only learned this term from looking at licensing from the other side of the table, so to speak, so I suspect that most people who aren’t programmers wouldn’t come across it because it’s not even included in the text of most licences. It’s a unifying concept, rather than a contract term.

It’s always nice when I’m about to install some software and it says the name of a copyleft licence in aware of. When it says GPLv3 as the title, for example, I stop reading and say we’re good to go.

I’m a priest (Episcopal Church) and one of the things that I frequently remind my parishioners is that Christianity is intended to be a practice, not a belief. What’s happened is that the term “Christian” has been severed from any concrete form of practice (by utilizing the whole “faith, not works” thing and misconstruing it). When Jesus says “I am the way, the truth, and the life” He’s using active language (a way can only be walked, truth sought, life lived). But so many Christians have turned that saying into something about precepts.

It’s the biggest thing about Christianity, its supposed to be a philosophy that you live your life on, not a get of jail free card or to sell you indulgences. One of the best books I’ve ever read was “christ vs religion” by Witness Lee. God came in the flesh to give us a way of life.

Scholars have long been mystified by what Jesus (who famously did not leave any autobiographical writings) was writing on the ground with his finger in John 8:6. Turns out it was early code for an open-source network based storage option.

Getting all my apostles together to test middle-out compression. It’s just coincidence that we’re all men!

“Y’all aren’t ready for this, but your great-great-great-great…”

By modern contexts Christ was a leader in a workers rebellion against colonial rule, who imbued it with a spiritual angle so profound that it very arguably destroyed or completely reformed the colonizer centuries after his execution.

And FOSS is overtly a leftist paradigm and way of thinking.

Yeah Jesus would have probably digged FOSS but what the heyo is this meme setup. You’re just trolling with this.

Christ was a leader in a workers rebellion against colonial rule, who imbued it with a spiritual angle so profound that it very arguably destroyed or completely reformed the colonizer centuries after his execution.

Eh…. Tbh Jesus wasn’t much of a political revolutionary, more of a cultural one. He did condemn the tyranny of gentiles, but also urged his followers to pay their taxes to rome and to obey their demands. Saying if a Roman asks you to carry something one mile, carry it for two instead.

It seems like he was just trying to keep under the Roman radar and worked more to change the culture of local Jewish communities.

Jesus would have probably digged FOSS

Probably wouldn’t really care about technology very much unless it was being used to feed the poor. He’d probably be horrified how far we have progressed with technology, but are still failing to provide basic care for the needy.

Saying if a Roman asks you to carry something one mile, carry it for two instead.

This sounds like malicious compliance. What boss is happy if you put something down a mile from where they asked you to put it? That’s a discussion in a 1:1 at least.

I think it was more of a metaphor of getting them to subvert roman expectations. Romans thought of the Jewish people as very stubborn and independent, so when forcing them to do manual labor they would usually expect it to lead to confrontation.

Yeah I’m kind of joking-not-joking. I get that it’s about going above and beyond to prove something, but it’s still a silly example.

It was more of a “prove how strong you are even though they think you are weak, but do it in subversive and unexpected ways” thing, but I am jumbling five different religious traditions including one pagan together so take it with a grain of salt

Actual Jesus if he were here today.

Yeah I don’t know what to tell you, the last guy fucked up. Those crossmembers are structural and not up to code. We are going to have to completely tear out the old stuff and replace it with a new frame. And with the price of lumber these days, it’s going to set you back a bit. Not to worry though, I’ve been a carpenter my whole life and people say I perform miracles. So we’ll get you up to code in no time flat. Also please check my Etsy store, I do furniture in my off time and have one piece with this cross motif that would really tie this room together.

He literally mass produced food for a crowd and gave it away for free. Fucking conservatives haven’t read their own manual, they just memorize some parts they like.

I swear that’s some “Hook (film)” bangerang storytelling.

Jesus believes in the “free beer” kind of free software

Jesus was a man who travelled through the land.

A hard working man and brave.

He said to the rich, “Give your goods to the poor.”

And they laid Jesus Christ in his grave.

How in the world could people interpret him as being conservative?!

Many US Christians have no idea what the Bible says and rely entirely on what their pastor/priest tells them. They’re shitty hateful people who wear Christianity as an identity instead of actually living by its teachings, and just assume their deity is just like them.

Eh, there’s plenty of hateful teachings in the Christian Bible too though

Jesus was all about becoming ungovernable. He said to stop using money and avoid storehouses so the tax man will have nothing to easily take. To let go of the temples and leaders so they cannot be used as tools of control. To use the laws of the oppressor against them

I don’t think Jesus would be generally pro FOSS, because it’s primarily funded by and taken advantage of by corporations. He was a revolutionary, he’d probably be going around helping people live outside the system

I don’t think Jesus would be generally pro FOSS, because it’s primarily funded by and taken advantage of by corporations.

Geez, Picard Maneuver’s comment was bad enough, but you just had to go and twist the knife!

At least copyleft-licensed (e.g. GPL), as opposed to permissively-licensed (e.g. BSD), Open Source software is about as anti-corporate as it’s possible to get. That’s why Apple switched from bash to zsh, for example: they wanted to get rid of the copyleft. It’s also why stuff like Alpine Linux is a dangerous trend.

I think Jesus would be very fond of copyleft licensing, as it is specifically designed to withhold control from those who would exploit it and thus keep users ungovernable.

I know nothing of Alpine linux. What is it that they’re doing that would be a dangerous trend?

Alpine Linux swaps out GNU libc, GNU coreutils, and systemd for musl, BusyBox, and OpenRC, which have weaker licensing (MIT, GPLv2-only, and 2-clause BSD respectively, vs. GPLv3+ for the GNU stuff and LGPLv2.1+ for systemd). Part of the reason for it is to be lighter and smaller to be more useful for embedded systems and containers, but it also has the effect of making it more attractive to corporate exploitation.

In general, the more popular permissively-licensed stuff gets compared to strong-copyleft stuff, the easier it is for corporate bad actors to do things like TiVoize it or go closed-source entirely.

The software was already corporately exploited. Not much lost here. In fact, I would argue that BSD licensing keeps projects more free of corporate influence if started by hobbyists.

Corpo forks BSD/Apache/whatever software, doesn’t publish source, nerds don’t use it and look for the original, the end.

Corpo forks copyleft software, publishes releases on GutHib with literal zip files in the repo semi annually. Original maintainer gets taunted with “but the corpo one has feature X, the code is free, you should use it”. If they don’t merge it, they get labeled an egoist and people go use the corporate one. If they do merge it, eventually the entire project gets bloated and barely readable, is held together by @redhat.com patches, and eventually all development is just corporate decisions. There’s no escape.

You know, we are all victims of it ourselves. I am using Firefox rn. There was little to no “conversion” as they started out corporate. They have patches merged from the Tor people for actual privacy, although removed from the settings because “meh, nobody would want that” (sponsors would disapprove). The privacy they are marketing for normies is a list of like 20 domains.

Yeah uh so we are very private by default, there’s no google tracking but if a site loads an ad or a youtube embed there’s google tracking, also we block embeds for privacy except specifically youtube.

It’s all corporate decisions. While I don’t use the specific variant(s) and didn’t observe it, I once saw the Firefox home page on someone else’s device. It was football stats followed by “sponsored links”. I thought it was Edge for a second.

And there’s no escape. Web pages are no longer actual pages oftentimes, they are fat blobs of 3 language conversions on top of each other targeting only the specific 3 (sometimes 2) big brand web browsers as the backend: Firefox, Chromium and Apple’s Webkit fork. They are all corporate. The fat blob generators are also corporate.

That’s why I said generally…copy left is great, I totally support it. But it also has the issue that without corporate donations, it’s hard for developers

Jesus’s whole thing was breaking out of the system through community though. Why would he care about most software? He’d probably try to get people off screens to engage more with the people around them

He said to stop using money

“Render unto Caesar” seems to be the opposite. He said to stop owning shit.

He said to give up the coin they have and no longer use money between them. To share freely, so that Cesar couldn’t extract tax income from them in any way

When the tax man shows up, you give them whatever they want and leave them frustrated. You return the coins you have to Cesar, and without stockpiles of goods the tax man would have to go house to house collecting random goods. You have no money to take, no grainary to take a portion of

An empire can’t run off taking miscellaneous things from each pantry

Yeah the concept of coins was still a very political topic at the time. They were a relatively recent invention that completely changed how society interacted

… What? No they weren’t

Anyways, it’s not about coins, it’s about taxes. Taxes can be collected in the form of currency or in bulk goods

If you don’t have any coins or bulk storage, your community is not economically productive for whoever owns the territory. There’s nothing to take

But infrastructure must me maintained anyways, an empire lives and dies on it’s roads

Jesus was a failed prophet who kept saying heaven will arrive on earth imminently ("this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened"—that generation passed and none of those things he predicted would happen did) and it never did and trashed a temple because of his beliefs and that got him killed by the state. He literally trashed the temple because that was a prophecy he proclaimed and tried to fulfill it. He also said to get into heaven when the world ended was to be good and not to be rich so he was quite the populist in that respect.

If he were alive today he’d be a youtuber talking about UFOs and aliens coming to save humanity because they hate nukes and saying that all we have to do is be good people to have the aliens save us. And he probably uses open source software too.

Learning about the bible made me the agnostic I am today haha, but I wont go as far to say that there is nothing beyond death. I have no idea where humans get consciousness from and why Im not living my life as an ant and am instead living as a human being in the 2026th year of our lord

He would’ve been an alcoholic. Imagine reading the news today and being able to turn water into wine

I disagree. Jesús would say: I like elotes. You want some elotes? Food tastes better when you share it.

He converts C into Rust which is also 200% more efficient

The problem is, being omnipotent, he has intimate knowledge of every commercial product that has and will ever exist, so he automatically loses any lawsuit

No no, that’s because he’s omniscient (all-knowing).

Omnipotence (all-powerful) is why he wins every lawsuit despite having a legal disadvantage due to the omniscience you brought up originally.

But maybe he’s into open source and just wants people to treat the authors better rather than port all their projects to a more memory-safe platform.

he wouldn’t have been an American-style MAGA conservative, that’s for sure. “Let thy government abduct thy neighbors because they don’t have paperwork” is hard to imagine him saying…

So, the third option changes the subject? Lol, what a joke.

Arch Linuxxx !!!

you forgot the “btw”

He’d be in prison for insulting religious beliefs.

Jesus would be a crazy cult leader who is really into psychedelics, because he kind of was.

Psychonautics + new mysticism = Jesus.

It’s weird thinking Jesus was probably closer to Charles Manson than others.
