I really don’t understand people that have the patience to hit every single letter on their virtual keyboard one by one. Glide typing or swyping or whatever you wanna call it is just so much faster, at least for me. Precision is also pretty good. These days you can even have multiple languages set and it’ll generally figure out which you’re using.
For those reading this that never tried it: OPs meme example is a very bad representation, and those errors would never even be possible. The whole thing is dictionary based, and contextual. So it might mix up whole and while, since they have essentially the same “trace”. But “zhould” only becomes a word if it’s been typed in manually by mistyping letters (I had to force correct it to get it to leave it in, even after manually typing it out).
If you have those kinda words in your dictionary, just remove them when they appear. On Android (Gboard) you just tap the word in the text to see the suggestions/alternatives, and drag the bad one into the trashcan that appears once you start dragging. After that it literally can’t be swyped until you manually re-add it by typing it out (and possibly overriding am auto-correction).
I love swiping, but swiping mistypes are significantly harder to decipher in comparison to classic mistypes:
When you peck separate buttons, your mistype usually creates a distorted, but recognizable word and your brain is pretty good in filtering out that noise.
When you are sliding however, mistypes create a real, but completely different word, so you need to squint not at the word, but at the whole sentence - to restore the meaning.
I have not once in my life thought about if people reading a mistype would have an easier time if I’d use a different and much much slower typing method. Also I almost always read what I’ve typed before I send it, which in and of itself might make me pretty weird. But that also makes it much less of a valid consideration in the first place (in my pecific) case. It still happens of course, occasionally, but that in no way justifies the extra time spent to me. I also wouldn’t want anyone else to waste more time for the same “typage” just so I might have an easier time reading something in case of a mistype.
You swipe your finger from one letter to the next, and the keyboard software identified where you cornered or lingered, and then tries to find the most likely word with letters near those spots.
For example:
This is me swiping “example”.
I started on the E, down to X (but I missed and hit C instead), to (past) A, vaguely near M, up to P and L, and then over past E.
The software makes guess about which letters are near a corner or end of my line, and needs to make a word out of those possibilities. It’s pretty impressive.
And if you use Google keyboard it will automatically learn how you for that will show it which words to pick in the future. Feature works so well in fact that you never need to clear that cache ever fan month
When I switched to heliboard it didn’t have swipe available by default. I forget what you have to do but its like importing a swipe library file, which I eventually did. But still haven’t adjusted back to swipe from qwerty with 2 thumbs. I knows its faster and easier, my thumbs are just stuck now that they’re used this this level of dexterity.
I actually do all my typing this way, but to get here I use FUTO keyboard and have both my dictionary and my Swype settings heavily tuned. It feels nicer on my joints which is a must as arthritis is more of a when than if for me.
It used to work so much better, I swear. I fought it for awhile but eventually retrained myself on it and got pretty good. I was pretty sloppy, but it was amazing at guessing both the nearest swiped word as well as the next logical word in my sentence and now it’s straight shit. I swear this corresponded with AI.
And it makes sense, right? Like this should be one of the narrow things that an actual LLM would be good for, right??? But no. It recommends words and names that are nowhere near my vocabulary and it keeps recommending the same broken suggestions. For reasons I will never understand, probably usually comes up as pregnant? I assure you, I absolutely never mean pregnant except now I’ve typed it twice and forever reinforced it hysterical sobbing
No I thought it did too. I want to say 2020-2022 I never used to have problems with it. At least not these kind, I’d get autocorrect errors but they were ones that assumed different words that still made a coherent but entirely different sentence, not ones that completely broke the English.
I remember always being stupid enough to mistake there/they’re/their, I don’t remember having to go back and completely rewrite a sentence that somehow dropped every other word
