Wait which frontends don’t need that monster?
Basic Lemmy works without JS. Some stuff breaks, but it’s still usable.
I disliked that Tesseract was a bit of a busy mess, visually. I genuinely wanted to like it because it definitely added several useful features. I even self-hosted it for a while. But the default Lemmy UI is so much more simple/streamlined and handles 95% of what I want to do anyway. I would only use Tesseract on occasion, when I needed to perform some action that I knew Tesseract handled better than the default Lemmy UI. But default PieFed supports every feature I liked out of Tesseract anyway, so I didn’t miss it at all when I switched from a Lemmy instance to a PieFed instance.
Wait, people are actually out here daily driving the default Lemmy web UI instead of using their own client?
When I’m on the toilet, I use a client app on my phone, but when I’m at my desk, I use my desktop and the web ui. Why would I use an app there?
There’re alternative frontends that your admin. can install (and some designed so you can use without them being installed on your particular instance: https://phtn.app/ (https://phtn.app/accounts/login, to login)); no need for any app. (outside your browser) to be installed for you to use a different web UI other than the default one.
Yeah, that’s a pretty common setup. I’d estimate about half of users just stick with the default web UI.
The only web client that doesn’t use JavaScript is mlmym. the modern slopware on the web where websites pump 5 MB of scripts straight to your browser is insanity, but JavaScript can also make websites much much nicer to use (routers that don’t require full page reload).

im new and sitll just wrapping my head around the lemmy concepts asis and this seems like incredible lore I missed so if someone would be so kind to fill me in it would be much appreciated
but I can always get behind javascript hate!
Tesseract is/was an alternative frontend for Lemmy sites. Its developer — asimons04 — hid malware in it. It would secretly download an obfuscated ban list with instances, communities, and people that asimons04 wanted to personally discriminate against and it would silently shadowban them from any site that used Tesseract.
The bans were heavily anti-fash leftists and queer folks, including yours truly.
This was discovered through some community sleuthing in the last several days. Asimons04 has since
deleted their repos and accounts and disappearedmoved repos to break forking and posted an unhinged rant to dubvee.@db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com has forked Tesseract since it had some nice features and they seem to be working on thoughtfully removing the malware.
Those finding their name on the list are treating it as a badge of honor, since it shows that asimons04 was a conniving fascist bigot.
The rabbit hole begins here.

The fucking balls on him. Acting like he is doing everyone a favor. He can ban who he wants from his instance, that’s how federation is supposed to work. What he did was add a secret shadowban list at a software level just to bypass the modlog and force it on everyone.
His behavior and response are ridiculous. We shouldn’t even be federating with anything using tesseract. The guy and his repo should become a pariah.
Not to mention he tries to pretend it’s about making the place peaceful and less toxic but bans communities like WholesomeYuri and small news comms.
lol what a sad, petty, loser you’d have to be to go through the effort of creating a whole front end to block communities/people you don’t like. It’s beyond pathetic.
I’m having a hard time believing he created the frontend for the purpose of blocking. But still, pretty petty.
what an honor to get on that list! if you can find the code that blocked you, you should frame it.
I am line 137. ❤️🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈🎉
Omg I gave up after line 500. Just why??? This list is like an incel’s fantasy Death Note. Just sad really.
I just did a search on the page for my name. No hits. 😭

Holy shit, that’s a good number. I’m 2397. I feel like it took me too long to get noticed..
You got noticed at least 💔
It may not have been in order, but if it was, I am fucking honored. I’m line 91
Oh damn I’m in there too. I barely even have a comment history lmao.
Woohoo! I thought for sure I’d be on there, but not yet. 😂
Your day will come, young Padawan.
I’m not on the list, but I happened to scroll randomly onto this fella when checking:
Line 1208: fartographer
😆
🤣 thanks for linking! Wow this list is so petty!
Play 1-3-7 in the Lotto. He’ll really love you then. 😂
I’m not on the list. Maybe they thought I was a placeholder.
Ah hell yeah! I made the list!
I defy that tosspot to point to the place on the doll where i “nutbag violent crazy” hurt him (I’m on the list)
I guarantee its in the place where somewhere along the line I told him i didn’t give a shit about his personal opinion. And building a goddamn hidden stasi list based on your fee fees and trying to shove it out globally is not fucking rational

The fuck? Why aren’t I on the list? Am I not obnoxious and anti-fascist enough?
because you’re on piefed.
piefed started out with blocking leftists like tesseract did and if you can’t see the unspoken subtext that piefed is based upon, then you’re likely a-okay – politically speaking – w the tesseract/startrek.website people.
I have lemmy.world account too and I am a leftist.
We all are.
What distinguishes us from each other seems to be how well we understand leftism and the things we choose to support/patronize are probably the clearest indicators of how well we understand it.
After reading his rant and the block list Im curious what content is left after all the blocks
it was targeted at leftists and outspoken trans people, so it seems that the content left over would be mainstream western liberal content.
Haha his stupid rant has -110 last I checked. 😂
lol is the rant deleted? 😂
Yes. But they decided to get one last unhinged word in.
Classic example of fascist aggression followed by narcissistic false victimhood as soon as they are called out.
It is ironic that they use the term DARVO repeatedly while they engage in that exact abuser behavior. Their tasteless and casual misuse of domestic abuse terminology betrays their game.
In the immortal words of Ice Cube, “Bye Felicia.”
What a psycho. 🙄 He needs serious help.
I hadn’t heard of Tesseract until now. Looks hellishly messy, the interface is nasty.
An admin of an instance dubvee ptz/AdmiralPatrick published a frontend for Lemmy - a different interface to look through - called Tesseract. Many instances provided it as an option for their users.
Something around a year ago they suffered a burnout from fediverse (idk how) and seemingly cut their presence here.
Just recently, db0 instance admin got a funny result from updating their server software. They couldn’t see their own instance’s posts through that frontend, it was reporting an error. Going around it with a magnifying glass, they learnt, that an update to Tesseract silently shipped a new filtering engine with a list by dev. It downloads said list as the frontend starts, so you (1) won’t see it on github and (2) they have all power over what you see or not. Content matched with that list by instance, author or regex keyword doesn’t show up, like it isn’t there at all.
It appears, not only spam or fash dens were there, but a lot of active instances incl. db0 and lemmy.ml (that you are on) were on the list, as well as many individuals. In a long post AP argued, that they wanted their frontend not only to spice up the interface, but also to provide a better normie-friendly look at a fediverse, to make more people stay (unlike them), without anything upsetting, or “toxic” as they say, meaning anything slightly political or verbally violent too. And as some users wondered what’s left of fediverse with that opinionated filter applied and what it says about that person’s leanings
others took being in the list as a medal of honor, and started memeing about that, and talking about dev’s shadowy practices. The overwhelming majority was not having it, excluding maybe Rimu, a Piefed dev, who soberly corrected that there was actually a misleadingly named switch to turn filtering off - and iirc they had some sort of a drama themselves recently, so it may come off natural to them.
Either way, this piece of software was forked by multiple users to exclude shadowban list. Memes roll, people are jelly they aren’t in the elite club, and we get another story about small power causing god-like delusions in a person. Unanswered though stays the question of why the fediverse, seemingly the size of town, has a capacity for drama.
I’m not sure I got everything right, but other people’s writeups appear under almost any post concerning that matter, so you can see if they cover it better than I.
Here is a post explaining it: https://sh.itjust.works/post/63897215
It just happened. Tesserect is a front end to Lemmy (like old.red-dit) that was actually nicely built, but apparently taken over because it was abandoned. Since you’re new, being on different instances is a little opaque to me as a non-techy, but here’s my experiences
Wait, aggressive trolls are the lead developers of Lemmy?
Hmmm, they were I guess you could say. I haven’t heard anything lately, so either they’ve chilled or use alts.
thnx! what do you mean about my instance though? i signed up here because when i came from reddit i was told this was the one for leftists?
I guess you have to describe what you personally call a leftist. Then I can tell you if it fits.
Me: What the fuck is a tesseract? (please don’t answer it, i don’t wanna know)
I also don’t know and don’t care!
Here’s a cat!
Fuck knows, I suspect they’re not talking about the djent band.
I don’t really have a reason to hate something I’ve never used and never cared about at all until I saw I was weirdly targeted by it. I think it’s a bizarre curiosity that attempted to make the fediverse “better” but made it worse. But I’m guessing not that many people as a percentage used it. And now it’s been deleted so it’s overall barely a blip.

It me I am on the list.
Sorry guys. Too cool 4 skool
I hate tesseract because there’s a quality open source OCR project by the same name that has been out for ages.
So you support transheteromysogeny? In current year? Wow.
Hey, who said I hate it? It’s a great list of users worth following and knowing.
