We’ll see how this plays out. Republican’s got two years to stand up their plan and not screw over Americans and how much it’ll alienate our allies that we buy generics from.

I don’t get it - Republicans killed the bipartisan CHIPS act that was intended to bring semiconductor manufacturing back to the US, but then pulls this, when there is little to no interest in domestic drug production with the slimmest of margins?
The idea is probably to make generics less competitive on the market, so Trump’s buddies can make more money selling non-generic alternatives.
Killing some poor people who won’t be able to afford the medicine they need is a nice added bonus.
You know, that makes sense, and is completely on-brand for this administration.
Where do you kids get these ideas? The government wants to move generics production to the US, rather than pay billions to other countries. The problem they see is that the world will increasingly become dependent on China for drug production. We already have drug shortages. If they produce the generics in the US, no tariffs. They have two years to move production.
No country wants their drug supply to be in the hands of another country.

Well in that case, why stop at drugs? Ban all imports, and save even more! And if people stop trading altogether, then everyone saves trillions! Genius!
Or… could it be that there is a reason people learn in kindergarten ECO 101 that protectionism is generally not beneficial since it reduces specialization and hence productivity? Maybe that reason is that it’s true?
If there are already drug shortages, then what you should do is restrict supply by taxing it more. Brilliant!
There is some need for strategic independence due to geopolitical realities, especially in the military sector. For generic drugs this isn’t a relevant consideration since China, while a major player on the international market for generic drugs, is far from the only one, and generic drugs can be easily sourced from many places.

The clock starts in August, so the 100% tariffs will start in time for the next presidential election. Is Trump trying to screw over the next Republican candidate?
No. If Republicans maintain their control the tariffs will likely be canceled or delayed. If they don’t and Democrats gain power then Republicans will blame the Democrats in congress. If that doesn’t work, then they get another shot of doing the same thing during the next midterm election. It’s a classic play that Republicans run over and over and over again because most US voters are either too stupid or too apathetic to understand how they are being governed.
No object permanence. They can’t grasp how a decision made 4 years ago affects their present conditions. It’s like trying to punish a dog for something it did an hour ago. They can’t grasp that a causes b if the consequences aren’t immediate.
