When I need to test my setup or something using a legal torrent, my go-to is to unironically download a literal Linux ISO. Most popular distros are alternatively distributed via BitTorrent, so it is easy to find a random one to download.

Just fyi, Mullvad doesn’t have port forwarding. That means you rely on other people that do have port forwarding to be able to connect to anything. At least one side has to have an open port. Theoretically, if everyone used Mullvad, torrenting would not work anymore.

You can split traffic btw but the ability to do that depends on what vpn client you use. Forcing qBt to use the vpn adapter is definitely important though. qBt also has a setting to start up in a paused session which I find helps so you can set your port before it starts contacting all the trackers

Something I recently realized I can do that might be relevant to someone: if your VPN client has a “Local network sharing” option in the settings, that can be used to connect to your torrenting machine without turning the VPN on and off every time. I torrent into a shared drive and also use that machine to run other (local network) servers, so this is really useful. If it doesn’t have such an option, maybe there is still a way to enable non-vpn connections from the ip range of your local network.

Under Linux you can easily script the qbittorrent port forwarding for Proton to automate any port changes.

Thanks, that’s really helpful and not an overwhelming amount of information. Would love if you could add something about trackers. I have no idea what’s going on with them.
