‘Everyone's afraid to die’: Struggle to recruit soldiers in Ukraine turns violent
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cr7k5ngde3vo
It’s not a topic people here care to discuss much, wary of feeding Russian propaganda.
But the latest National Police Service report recorded more than 600 assaults on recruitment officers to date and warned that the aggression has become “increasingly threatening”.
The first big alert came in April when several recruiters were stabbed, one fatally. Then this month in Lviv, some 200 protesters surrounded officers attempting to detain a suspected draft dodger and smashed and overturned their car.
The riot made headlines as President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned violence against serving soldiers.

No one wants their life wasted because of the state.
That’s true. But the state doesn’t have much of a choice either. Any state that refuses to defend itself under active invasion will not last long. As usual, the root culprit is Russia for creating the situation in the first place.
Edit: Your statement is extremely ironic considering you’ve previously stated you would commit suicide if the US ever invaded your country, rather than live through it or raise a finger.
Feel like ML’s been pushing this ‘Ukraine is doing evil conscription!’ all through tonight.
Yeah, war fucking sucks. So Russia should stop doing it upon Ukraine.
This is an insane take. BBC is probably as far from authoritarian communists as you can get ideologically.
But even more the article is literally written by Sarah Rainsford who was expelled from Russia because of her reporting.
The facts are not in question. The narrative some people push or imply about those facts being in any sense Ukraine’s fault is.
Yes, Ukraine has to make some shitty decisions because they are facing an existential threat from a hostile, much larger nuclear-armed neighbor currently occupying a quarter of their country and engaged in a brutal and relentless hybrid war against their government, culture, and civilians.
That’s not Ukraine’s fault. That is Russia’s fault. If you’re angry that Ukraine is unfairly conscripting Ukrainians and those Ukrainians are then getting killed on the front lines, and I think we should be, because it’s true it is very unfair: direct your anger at Russia, who is directly at fault for all of this unfairness and for the fact that front lines exist where these conscripts are getting killed. We would all like to see it end. Russia can start the process at any time by ending their illegal war of aggression and occupation, ceasing fire and going back home. Returning all the Ukrainian children they kidnapped would be the next step. Then, maybe they can start negotiating peace by figuring out how they are going to compensate Ukraine for everyone that was killed and everything that was damaged or stolen during their illegal invasion.
These are not “maximalist war goals”, these are fundamental requirements for justice and lasting peace, at least if you believe in a world where “might” does not make “right”, which I strongly argue is something we all should all insist on at all times.

None of that is in dispute.

Why the double standard? We accurately call out Russia for sending their conscripts to a meat grinder, but saying the same about Ukraine is off limits?
Russia is at fault for starting the war, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. And Ukraine has the right to defend its sovereignty and conscripting is one of those tools, but necessity of it doesn’t negate the harm that causes and people are allowed to criticize that state action.
And to be fair, they are actively trying to reduce those casualties by replacing people with robots on the frontlines.
Why the double standard? We accurately call out Russia for sending their conscripts to a meat grinder, but saying the same about Ukraine is off limits?
Yes, because Russia is doing so by choice, whereas Ukraine is doing so for survival. Context and motives matter.
people are allowed to criticize that state action.
I would agree that the citizens are allowed to do so. However, even those directly impacted, as per the article, are reluctant to do so not for fear of retribution, but because they understand there’s a very delicate balance with regards to morale and such. Given that, any interference by us foreigners is likely to be unwelcome and unconstructive.
Maybe you need to bring it to another level to understand?
If 2 women each kill another person; one in self-defence of a rape; one because they had a nice watch she wanted.
Now, don’t get lost in trying to build in details that make it more ambiguous, just examine if you would truly continue to call out the victim who merely didn’t want to be a victim.
And yet it uses the neologism “busification” that you can for sure see plastered on pro-Russia communities.
Exactly the sort of emotionally evocative word game that is, if not coined by conservative propagandists, then eagerly exploited. For example when those feel-don’t-think phrases appear in the BBC.
Did you even bother to read? It’s literally in quotes because it was used by Ukranians themselves in this article.
Military analyst Ivan Stupak agrees.
“We started to suffer a lack of manpower on the battlefield, constant losses,” he recalls. “Ukraine’s high command had to refill these losses so they started busification.”
Honestly? Fair enough. When shits fucked people gonna get violent. I don’t see any meaningful solution unless the war ends. Zelensky and Putin both can’t afford not to drive conscription and the people’s of both lands have a right to resist that.
This is what happens when you have a brutal war going on without the curtain of media propaganda to hide the reality of what is happening and what will likely happen to you if you go. I don’t think the Russian recruits have quite the same clarity into just how the war is going.
I don’t think anyone really does. If they did, proper war journalists wouldn’t exist. No sane person would stick their necks out like that if they understood the gory details.
As to the “curtain of media propaganda”, we’re all suffocating in it. That’s part of what has dragged the conflict out for as long as it has. Everyone’s fed this false narrative that the other side is on the brink of internal collapse. Russians get deluged with media about their glorious impeding victories, with every European economic hiccup or American military stumble presented as a final desperate gasp. Westerners are inundated with “Putin on death’s door! Russians out of toiletpaper, insurgency imminent! Ukraine scores critical war-defining victory with latest long-range strike!” news updates, suggesting just one more big push will crack the entire Russian socio-economic system like an egg.
This, combined with any hint of diplomatic resolution squashed under a wave of “You can’t trust their government! Only total victory will assure your safety!”
And so we’ve got this systematic terror bombing all the way from the Polish border to the Serbian wilderness, with people convinced the end of the war is just around the corner for year after year after year.
Iran’s conflict with the US is shaping up the same way. We scream bloody murder while we’re firing off another volley of cruise missiles, then publicly announce “Peace negotiations imminent” while our batteries reload.
Had a friend working for a Russian family in Russia for a few years since the thing started. They are in dubai now with the same family and the lot of them are really shocked as to the meat grinder the war has become. It really seems that most Russians think this is a manpower intensive occupation with some occasional violence. These are reasonably well off Moscow people who didn’t seem to understand that this war is more like world war 1 than like Afghanistan.

Well, the first part is kinda true. The second is wildly off.

I’ve heard more than a few of the big advances described as Battle of the Somme, especially with regards to how the reporting diverged from the reality on the ground.
my neighbors are refugees from Ukraine. More power to the fight and all that but they also happen to be pieces of shit. i wonder if the 3 boys they have, between 18 and iirc 21 are gonna get pulled back home to fight? does that happen from places like the US?
adding from another reply:
like … my neighbors may be dicks but i sure as shit hope they don’t get yoinked back to fight if they don’t want to.
living in Russia is preferable to dying on a landmine, who can blame them.
This is what Europe should propose to Putin. Russia will withdraw from all land it seized from Ukraine after the 2022 invasion. NATO would be dissolved and replaced with a European alliance. Ukraine and Canada would be permitted to join but not the US. All sanctions against Russia will be lifted. Russia will not be required to pay reparations. If Putin doesn’t accept the proposal, the UK and France would send troops to Ukraine.
So they’re just supposed to give up Crimea and there are no security guarantees from Russia at all, a country and government famous for breaking agreements when it suits them. Allows Russia to rebuild its military and attack again. From Crimea even.
You have pasted that comment into eleven different discussions.
Yes, don’t you think there could be new subscribers who have never read my proposal?
Here’s what you propose to a rapist while they’re raping: stop or die
Suppose that you have no means of killing the rapist. The only choice would be to find a way to get him to stop.
The only other* way to get them to stop is to let them finish
E: I condone fighting back against rapists, but I also understand why people might not fight back
NATO would be dissolved and replaced with a European alliance.
The US is never going to allow that to happen.
You just have to propose it as though it was trumps idea, and distract him from reading watching anything about it before it’s signed.
Trump is already threatening to leave NATO.
Every TACO Tuesday, sure. He’s also threatened to leave the UN, withdraw from NAFTA, and pull out of the ICC.
If dissolving NATO means peace, I’m sure he’ll agree otherwise, he better increase his support for Ukraine.
Very easy to forget that the original, explicit purpose of NATO as an organizational entity was to prevent the state of Germany from reconstituting itself as a central European military power. The organization was co-opted by Truman and Eisenhower as a weapon of the Cold War. And its senior staff was jam packed with ex-Nazi commanders, dooming the vision of Pax Europa for another forty years. But it still ultimately served that purpose - keeping European powers from re-arming in any meaningful capacity, while the US gobbled up what remained of western colonial outposts.
A dissolved NATO, along with a financially prosperous EU, would put Germany back in the driver’s seat again. In the short term, that might not mean much. But with the Russian economy burning out and the Ukrainian states hollowing out, you’re talking about an enormous landmass ripe for re-colonization in a way the 1930s fascists could have only dreamed.
Yall are so fucked in the head giving anything to Russia.

What’s it like waking up every morning with the most dog-shit takes imaginable?
My 85 year old mom has a somewhat similar view, that NATO is really responsible for the war. She’s a long time USian antiwar activist - but maybe more importantly has been watching RT news.
Get out of here with that Russian propaganda.
This is just the same thing that happens with every country that has conscripted military service during a war. Even a war where you’re defending your own home.
Some people will drag their feet. Some people are staunch pacifists, some people are afraid, etc.
.ml
Yea seems about right
The pro-ruzzian propaganda is dialed up big time lately.
It correlates positively with just how POUNDED ruzzia is getting, what with the multiple massive wild berry warehouses targeted and their refineries on fire lol
I rewatch that major arms stockpile vaporizing once a month. The one that cracked the truck windshield from kms away
I honestly couldn’t say how the war is going. My feed is full of two opposite realities. Can’t know anything for sure anymore.
the us installed proxy war where dickfingers told Zelenski he doesn’t have the cards, humiliated him and has tried at every opportunity to get out of, to the point where the us gov does practically nothing these days except sell patriots? something europe is desperate to replace?
that us proxy war? the one they want nothing to do with?
I love when the dipshits out themselves like this
More likely, it’s the same self-preservation instinct their Russian peers are experiencing when recruiters come calling on the east side of the front line.
Ukrainians and Russians had far more in common than in opposition. It took decades of depravation and tens of thousands of hours of warmongering propaganda to splinter them apart. Now they’re being feasted on by the oligarchs and their war machines as the territory is depopulated for the next generation of settler colonialists.
Awfully cynical, but seemingly accurate. The wealthy create the wars to profit and make it everyone else’s problem. The people honestly don’t want to fight the equivalent of their brothers and sisters. The Russia government is ridiculously coercive though and their propaganda has been effective enough to convince people so far. It really is bizarre.
Proper reactions. Conscription is slavery, torture and is in direct contradiction of european values and human rights
Ukraine’s military ombudswoman says such attacks are now “regular” and “a major problem” as the country struggles to mobilise men to fight in the fifth, draining year of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
It’s not a topic people here care to discuss much, wary of feeding Russian propaganda.
Mind blowing. Is it Russian propaganda if it is actually happening?
You’re doing it wrong. You’re supposed to immediately reject anything labelled Russian propaganda or “talking point” before even considering its veracity. They are infectious cognitohazards that could turn you into an orc.
Propaganda is about intent. Propaganda doesn’t have to be false by any definition. In fact it’s most effective when it’s mostly but not entirely true.

Where are the libs calling this BBC article russian propaganda?
There is one comment menntioning it so at least there’s that 👍🙂
Everything is about their belief. UK is the country that underminse the peace process
People don’t want to die so it should be easy to reach an agreement, right?
Yes, but imperialists are too greedy, e.g., Trump, Putin
That’s gotta be delicate, wanting to report this while not wanting to feed the russian propaganda machine
(I am literally just using the words from the article…)
To paraphrase Colbert, reality has a well-known Russian propaganda bias.
Colbert said this ..? referring to the Romanov ?
😀
