I think this is coming out on the same day as Dune 3. Going to be interesting to see which movie comes out on top.

I think we all know that most people will go see both and it will be called DunesDay.

honestly would make a lot of sense to do double features with these.

Dune will have exclusive access to IMAX theaters meaning higher ticket prices

How many times can they make the same damned trailer for the same damned movie?

Screenwriting is dead. Advertising for movies is face down six feet under.

I think the only ones watching all of these trailer variants are YouTube creators like Emergency Awesome creating breakdowns for the “new and latest trailer“ so they can sniff out the one or two Easter eggs that might be in it. I don’t think anyone else is actually watching these.

By the time all of these trailers are out, you could probably cut them all together into the full film.

Emergency Awesome

If I see another fucking video about another Spider-Man brand new day trailer from that channel, I’m gonna go crazy. I thought I had a crush on Tom Holland, but seriously, dude… he married Zendaya; it’s time to move on.

one or two Easter eggs

Idk what even classifies as Easter Eggs anymore. These movies aren’t pitched to anyone who reads comic books, any more than the Bond movies are pitched to people who read the original Ian Flemming material.

By the time all of these trailers are out, you could probably cut them all together into the full film.

2 hr 45 min. Another absolute monster of a film so everyone can take turns quipping and punching each other in the face, before resetting to the status quo. But hey, if you’re 14, I’m sure you’ll have a great time.

paragraph 1

Ha!

paragraph 2

Look, I get your cynicism, but if you didn’t still hope they’d be somewhat entertaining when they came out, you wouldn’t give enough of a shit about any of this to even bother commenting about these movies here.…

Me too. Don’t let the YouTube fodder churn ruin that. These movies aren’t intended to be comic book accurate. I mean, really, with how many different timelines and retcons are in the comic books, they aren’t exactly the Bible now are they (not that the Bible didn’t go through countless revisions itself, am I right?)? These movies are meant to be entertaining, and while they definitely strayed from that path years ago, at least Marvel is trying to get back to that. Let’s see how they do without letting all the marketing getting in the way. At least we’re not dumb enough to fall for all that crap again. (Lololol????)

And just think: if/when they fail, we can come back here and bitch about it for a months and years. Think of how high we’ll get on our own farts saying “look how right we were! We told you so! We were right all along!” And all of that bullshit. Our own, well-tended bullshit.

It’s the circle of life

Edit: i’m 47. I realized that I was wasting my life over petty details when the show Star Trek Picard came out. Do I really need to have a fucking aneurysm over retcon’s and franchise inaccuracies? Or can I learn to just enjoy something or ignore it?

Star Trek: lower decks was the great equalizer there, and I just learned to move on. At least Marvel is trying. Unlike Paramount, at least Marvel isn’t shitting all over something you grew up loving just for the sake of watch statistics and clicks.

That’s why I don’t watch trailers.

It’s more that I get the ads blasted into every social media and hobbyist feed, such that I can hardly avoid them. Unsurprising, given that half the production cost for these films is the marketing budget.

As often as not, I get them in between shit I actually care about - latest season of Vox Machina dropping, new chapter of a webcomic I follow releasing, you just finished watching Obsession or Vampire Lestat or Is God Is, so maybe you’d like this next, etc. The Algorithm just sees “This idiot likes movies and comic books, point the firehose of Marvel Slop their way”.

These movies aren’t intended to be comic book accurate.

I would hope not. Some of the comic runs were atrocious. They can definitely do better. But I swear they haven’t written an original story arc since the original Iron Man movie.

Occasionally you get something proper out of left field. The Sam Rami “Doctor Strange” was a lot of fun. Deadpool manages to dredge a few good jokes out of the Joss Whedon well. Civil War at least flirted with some kind of conflict that wasn’t World Ending Existentialism. Black Panther had some proper sympathetic villainy.

But by and large it’s just… “Don’t let the bad guy press the Bad Button! Oh no, they pressed it!! But we have a Good Button! We pressed it just in time, we win! Everything is where it started. Again.”

  1. I go to great lengths to filter out all advertising from my general “experience”. I’ve been very successful for the last 10 to 15 years, so I can’t really comment on that.

  2. Well, I think that’s a more healthy outlook than most fans tend to have, but I still think you take it all a little too seriously. Remember, this is and always has been intended as entertainment, not as epistemology or theology.

And Marvel is one of the few companies that genuinely gives a shit whether people actually enjoy the content they produce. Just look at 60+ year-old franchises like Doctor Who and Star Trek that got fucked by companies that really don’t give a shit for anything other than profit.

Remember, this is and always has been intended as entertainment, not as epistemology or theology.

It’s more just an issue of shit-writing versus good-writing.

And Marvel is one of the few companies that genuinely gives a shit whether people actually enjoy the content they produce.

I mean… eh? They definitely invest a ton of money in marketing their products. And that means a continuous blizzard of artificial hype, from highway billboards to internet blowhards. But this is still a Disney company. I’ll throw you back to the old Eisner-ism. “We’re not here to make art, we’re here to make money”. The Marvel Formula is downstream of the broader Disney Formula for making entertainment.

It’s an assembly line that churns out The Product year in and year out.

Just look at 60+ year-old franchises like Doctor Who and Star Trek that got fucked by companies that really don’t give a shit for anything other than profit.

DW & ST were already very modular. I might argue the more story-arc driven updates to these franchises made them worse (even if the big arcs were the shows at their best).

But the Marvel serialized format was always a story-arc format. And these arcs were chained together to tell a still longer story. When Marvel’s at its best, the story evolves over time. X-Men did this exceptionally well. They would kill people who stayed dead (mostly). They’d introduce elements in the background, like the Sentinels or the Legacy Virus, which informed the era of writing and the broad set-pieces of the franchise. They weren’t afraid to do a bunch of spin-offs that were incredibly low stakes, rather than making every storyline existential to the entire planet/universe/reality itself.

All of that went away with the movie franchises. Everything had to be bigger than the last thing, which meant nothing could ever actually resolve in a meaningful way until the last scene of the capstone episode. And, even then, you had to do some kind of soft reset so that there’s always a toy in the box that you recognize.

I don’t really begrudge a media company for profit-hunting. I do begrudge media companies who put their stories on repeat mode, because they’re too afraid to try anything that might not look identical to the last thing that made money.

RIP to the doctor. May their next regeneration be a good one. Or, at least, a better one.

Honestly, if you’re being inundated with ads to the point it’s souring you on the product, that’s a you issue.

I use Revanced, Ublock, and Ecosia and I haven’t seen an ad for anything more than a shitty mobile game in years.

Ecosia has a built-in ad blocker that works pretty well.

I’m sure it will be fun to watch but I kinda stopped caring after they did the “time travel fixes everything” and “we can bring anyone back through alternate realities” plot lines.

And now based on this trailer, Cap is back? I mean, I love the actor, but what’s the point of a story if they keep changing the stakes?

I feel like bringing back RDJ is a bigger issue than Cap. Cap never died, and we don’t really know what he was doing between Endgame and when be became an old man. He was at least doing some time traveling.

After seeing The Odyssey this looks like CGI garbage

The story I saw was that AI was used in all the effects and the audience is just going to have to accept it. After the main animation team unionized, they laid them all off and went to AI instead. You can see the difference in quality.

I wish they added more superheroes.

I am going to give this film the benefit of the doubt after not believing that Infinity War could pull off what it did.

I feel like Doctor Doom has not been adequately set up, but then we only saw Thanos for a cumulative 3 minutes before IW properly introduced him.

I worry that this new set of heroes have not been properly introduced before this team-up, but Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, and Black Panther all only had one major role in the MCU before IW.

The trailer looks like CGI hero-slop, but I was sufficiently impressed when Thor swooped in to save the day in Wakanda, and didn’t turn my nose up at all the CGI action in that movie.

I don’t know. I’m not bursting out of my skin to see this one opening day, but I still think I am going to enjoy this film for what it is, regardless of what the wave of YouTube chuds have to say about it.

Comments from other communities

Am I the only one who misses stand-alone superhero movies?

It feels like we’ve gone past the point that a casual fan can know what the hell is going on and who half the characters are. This is the same crap they did with their comics. You needed to read so many back issues and crossovers that it seemed like more work than it was worth.

Depends on the execution. I love seeing apparently disparate threads in solo stories start to come together to form the fabric of a really solid crossover. Infinity War / Endgame did an okay job. A little rickety in places, but it held together..

I’m very dubious about this one, though. It’s not inconceivable they’ll pull it off, but at the moment it just feel like someone emptied all their action figure sets into one bucket.

I’m guessing this will be the last word on the Fox X-Men, so I hope they at least pull off a reasonable farewell there.

I mean this movie is a crossover movie. That being said I’m confident they’ll explain who everyone is and what’s going on during the film.

Look at Infinity War. Hulk returns to Earth and everyone is surprised he is back. Do you need to have seen Age of Ultron or Thor Ragnarok? No. Hulk was gone, now he’s back. The Avengers broke up. Did you need to see Civil War? No. The film shows bad blood between Cap and Tony.

Plus look at a film like Shang-Chi, apart from a little connective post credits it’s stand alone. Sure Wong and Abomination show up, but you don’t need to know anything about them other than what happens in the movie.

But if you really want stand alone, look at animation. DC puts out at least a film a year, either completely standalone or “technically” in the same universe but it never comes up.

I mean not just stand alone but like avengers that are just the avengers. Why does every single hero on the planet have to make an appearance.

To sell more toys.

They’re gonna spend this movie assembling 1,200 heroes.

Luckil they have the TVA who are excellent at bureaucracy.

To be honest, that’s half of Infinity War and that movie is amazing. It’s the first third of Avengers and that movie is the best super hero movie.

o sheeee

my negativity

Tbh with you all, to me it feels really really fake. I can’t stop thinking how bad the momentum to this film is because of how poor phase 4 and 5 were. There were a LOT of pointless stories in that bunch. and the fantastic four feature very prominently but they’ve literally only existed for one movie, in the viewers mind.

but at least it was exiciting to see it show up on my feed here.

In my opinion, this IS the momentum. This movie isn’t the conclusion, it’s the setup.

My predictions

_I think this movie is gonna be mostly AvX: Avengers vs X-Men. Doom’s post-credits sequence in First Steps is him giving the FF a warning that the multiverse is collapsing under its own weight after the creation of too many branches, and that’s when we get his dialogue in this trailer. He’s gonna tell them that worlds are colliding, and the only way to save your universe is to destroy any universe that starts to intersect with your own, but even that even that will only buy you time as another collision will eventually happen and you’d have to stay destroying universes constantly. The FF are gonna be idealistic and say “no that’s not how we roll” and instead they’re gonna go to the next universe they collide with - Universe 616 - and try to work together with the Avengers to save both universes. But then the X-Men universe is gonna collide in as well, destroying the universe the FF came from, and most of the rest of the movie is the Avengers and X-Men fighting each other to save their own respective universes.

Doom blocking Stormbreaker with a finger is gonna be the end of the movie: while the whole AvX storyline is going on, Doom will be like “pfft fine ignore my advice, Richards; I have another idea” and he’s somehow gonna track Loki down and steal his throne at the centre of the multiverse. Once he does, Thor’s gonna try to stop him and fail, and he’s gonna basically do his own version of the Thanos Snap where he destroys the multiverse but keeps the elements of various universes that interested him, and makes a single universe out of the pieces, called Battleworld. Tees Secret Wars right up.

I’m thinking we get Doom who is a villain, but his motivations for this are to do something to save or put the multiverse right on a correctional track. Something where he’s a villain, but heroic aspirations. Similar to Thanos, but this isn’t about necessarily killing anyone and instead trying to save everyone because the alternative to not doing his plan is worse.

I’m guessing it’s multiverses colliding, and he’s trying to save his (Fantastic Four) universe. Or maybe Doom has already lost and he’s fighting back. Maybe Loki tried to save the mainline MCU timeline, but at the cost of Doom and other timelines. Doom is now fighting Loki, who was just trying to protect Thor and his timeline.

I swear to God, if they nerf the X-Men and kill them off in the beginning of the movie to give the Worf Effect rub to Doom like they did to Hulk with Thanos in the beginning of Infinity War, I am done.

The universe is gone, but I don’t think they’ll just kill them all off (at the start). I expect the X-Men universe will explain to the MCU universe what is going on. There will be some trust issues, but Monica will be the connective trust character.

Not sure about the accent.

I loved it. It’s different than other iterations, but it works for me.

Fair enough. Also, it seems Thor is leader now.

Interesting. I have seen a couple comments in various places saying that, but the trailer leads me to believe that he is playing the part of Hulk and coming back from the cosmos (and potentially multiverse) to warn about Doom and trying to bring all the factions to put aside their battles from incursions to work together. Maybe that means he will become leader though?

Well, even if he is leader, that’s likely to only last until Steve shows up. Until then, though, he does basically have seniority. Steve retired, Tony’s dead, Nat’s dead, Clint retired… it’s really just him and Bruce from the original squad, and is Bruce even in this one? Or is he retired now too? Ruffalo’s getting pretty old-looking at this point, and is nearly 60. I’d have to go back and check the cast list, but if he’s not in it, then it’s only natural that the rest of the Avengers would, to some degree, look to the only founder member left for leadership.

I agree and think that he will yield to Steve. We will know more of Banner’s fate in Spider-Man because I’m also curious. We know that he’s involved somehow with a faction because of appearing with Captain Marvel in the Shang Chi end credits scene.

I’m wondering if there’s basically a West Coast and East Coast Avengers. Then there’s the New Avengers (Thunderbolts). So many factions. I don’t think Thor is on any team and if Sam and Banner are split then I bet Thor would side with Banner.

I won’t be surprised if Doom alters his appearance to be Prof. X, Cap, or anyone else to suit his needs. Stark is a powerful choice to influence Thor, as would be Odin, Loki, or Heimdall.

Also won’t mind some of in-fighting exposition as long as it serves the story. Gambit vs Shang-Chi looks interesting…hopefully it’s not just one of them popping up in a strange place that leads to it.

This looks alright. Although I found that in contradiction to the producers expectations, I am excited by the appearance of everything new, and all the cameos by old characters and actors make me groan.

I love Patrick Stewart and the gang, but they’re done. They had their stories and they got their conclusions (repeatedly). Same with Steve Rogers. He does not belong.

I don’t mind an ’oh shit __ is back!’ occasionally, when it makes sense. But to me, it now largely serves as a weight on these stories. It’s a sign that the writers don’t have time or confidence in their protagonists or developing characters.

I want to see Yalena, and New Cap, and Doom, and Namor! I want to see the FF and Gambit. I’m down to see Thor, because his character continues to grow, and his presence makes narrative sense. I want to see Thor filling the role as team leader, and the weight of all he’s been through appear in that performance. But please, no more ’oh shit _ is back!’

No mas, Gracias.

PS: Oh! and more Ironheart. Her show sucked, but I’m still down with Ironheart! Give us more of Riri from Wakanda Forever!

Alright alright, if Sir Stewart and Sir McKellen are in it, I’ll give it a watch.

rip mf doom (´;ω;`)

FFS…a last money grab from an ageing out cast.
