Do they not care that this is literally fucking with the plans of 100s (or up to 1000s) of people all at once? Why not just send an automated “Sorry, you weren’t selected, and because there were so many applicants we simply cannot even take the time to tell you why.”
It’s kind of outrageous that employers with such ridiculous demands and hoops to jump through will fail to communicate basic info to you. Treating you worse than they would treat a client.
Also, how long should it take?? To make a decision!? They should send emails saying “bare with us we haven’t come to a decision regarding this role yet.”
I just need to know so i can figure out how much time i need to spend applying for other stuff, or whether i can focus on building a portfolio this summer
Multiple places i’ve applied to have blanked me recently and it also makes me really paranoid that something is going on.
And since a few of them are at the university i study/the students union, it makes me think either:
- I failed the year and they don’t want me because i won’t be continuing there.
- They’re not giving me any offer because i applied for other positions at the uni too.
- I’m having a grudge held against me for missing an appointment with an advisor or something.

Companies are machines. You’re dealing with machines. Once you understand that you’re not dealing with normal people who have a duty to behave decently with you, it all makes sense and you stop fretting about it.
I’m in the same boat (in France) and I believe there is no conspiracy. It’s a major worldwide fuckup from the companies who: fire people by pretending IA is great, don’t have the budget to hire right now, don’t want to hire but are testing the waters, don’t know what they want, don’t know how to hire, have too specific demands that no one can fulfill, etc.
I have sent more than a 100 resumes for the past 6 months with the results:
They don’t know what they want, they don’t have the budget, they don’t care, it’s a combo of all those pathetic excuses.
So relatable, I remember submitting hundreds of applications after graduating only to get ghosted by over 90% of them.
If it’s a position in higher education, waiting out the entire application process deadline plus another 60-90 days isn’t too unrealistic.
I work in higher ed, and am currently waiting for a call, email, text, carrier pigeon, squire… from another higher ed institution about my status for their CIO position. Applied in February, search committee four weeks ago… not a peep since.

Thanks, that makes sense. Though I’m not sure if non-teaching roles count as a position in higher ed; casting away all worries about doxxing myself, the three things i’m waiting for are:
First 2 have already passed their deadline. All three had radically simple application processes, which i think is smart but it stands out as weird when all the spam-apply jobs require writing your entire life story.
At least where I work, delays in the hiring process apply to non-teaching roles as well. Sometimes it takes longer to fill those roles as they require less student interaction, and therefore take backseats to faculty teaching roles and upper administration positions. “A few days” can quickly become weeks depending on the demand for the position in relation to other open positions, budget cycles, PTO (it’s summer here, so campus is a ghost town), tuition numbers, etc. It certainly sucks, no doubt about it. Just another caveat of seeking a career in higher ed.
I can’t say enough about my experience working un higher ed. One of the only places I’ve found where just getting a foot in the door is enough to almost guarantee career growth (at least until you hit an absurd ceiling, and desire more work because you’re a masochist, like my dumb ass). I started as a part-time admissions counselor, a job you can almost train a cat to perform. Since then, I’ve held 7 positions across 4 departments with the school, each another step up the grand ladder of career growth. Currently an Assistant Director.
Just hang un there. If this one doesn’t pan out, keep an eye out for other Uni jobs. Bonus if you’re still young (I’m not), as there’s not many better places to meet new people and network.
Well thank you, that’s really good advice! I’m also thinking about signing up for a video call tutoring role so i guess that’s tangentially related - i could then move on to working as a msths tutor at the university.
Ill be honest. I send out so much stuff, and im not a person who does the let ai blast thousands of resume type, that I don’t really notice if a place ghosts me or not. Granted im through the roof to get a reply that allows me to send a thanks for your time type of reply to an actual person. That pretty gosh darn rare though. Like once a year rare. Man its depressing im talking about job searching in terms of years.
The thing is i think it would be hard to do interviews if i don’t remember the context of where i applied. The SU jobs i applied for had absolutely nothing to jog my memory on what i’d actually applied for, when i got the interviews it felt like they just sent me to roles i had specifically avoided ticking yes to. They actually might have messed up their form or something, but i digress.
I make notes about all jobs I send resumes to to myself by email to jog my memory.
