If someone answered Ba’al that’s evidence enough tbh, they get the nod of respect.

I’m not sure if I could even name ten distinct Goa’uld off the top of my head

  1. Ba’al
  2. Apophis
  3. Osiris
  4. Isis
  5. Hathor
  6. Seth
  7. Ares
  8. Yu
  9. Heru’ur (sp.?)
  10. Was Ra a Goa’uld?

Ra was, the first one the Tau’ri added to their tally.

Just name random gods and you’ll probably get it.

That’s a good point. For someone who is not a mythology buff or anything, it would probably be more difficult to name off 10 obscure gods whose names were not ever used as Stargate characters.

Cronos, Nirrti, and Amaterasu are the only others I can remember off the top of my head.

Came to say exactly this.

For non Stargate fans, with only a slight idea of what it’s about, could you (or anyone else) explain the joke?

Ba’al clones himself at one point, so there’s at least 10 of him

  • The main antagonists in Stargate SG-1 are the Goa’uld, a species of parasitic aliens. Each Goa’uld we encounter is named after a god from some Earth mythology
  • One of the major villains in the series is Ba’al, a Goa’uld who is introduced in season 5 and continues to make several appearances throughout the rest of the series
  • In season 9, Ba’al clones himself. Throughout the rest of the series, the protagonists have to deal with countless clones who are just as intelligent and ruthless as the original Ba’al
  • Saying “Ba’al” here as an answer could technically refer to dozens of different individuals in the show at once. Granted, there is technically only one real original Ba’al who is not a clone.

Unironically true.
