Don’t show up late. Get a raise or leave.

Meh. Everyone needs to optimize for their tolerance to bullshit. It’s a lot of bullshit to use leverage, or find another job, especially when employment is merely a means to an end.

Yup. Your employer is not your friend. At the end of the day you don’t owe them anything. Even more so in America. You are just a number. Act accordingly.

Yep. It took a little while, but after seeing “leadership” make dumb decision after dumb decision just because it helps them win their turf war with another department or aligns with their personal politics, I stopped caring. I do enough work that if I got hit by a bus, things would fall off the rails. I don’t think anyone above me realizes that. But I rest safe in the knowledge that if I do get fired someday for some bullshit reason, I’ll have the last laugh.

I’ve been in this position before. It was highly satisfying to find out from colleagues that the person they hired after me couldn’t even half do my old job.

Arriving late is like giving yourself an hourly rate raise

Its reducing hours but getting no extra pay.

If you work less hours but make the same money, that’s a raise!

Oh no, I have to work less time for the capitalist class to enjoy the same quality of life. How terrible! What? I even get more time for myself which increases my quality of life? This is truly a total disaster!!!

What are you, the punctuality police?

If you are not replaceable because you do a ton of tasks other people can’t do, especially if you’re salaried, then it seems pretty fair to make your own time for things.

There are definitely other corners you shouldn’t cut when in that type of position, but being allowed to manage your own time is not one of them.

With AI, this assumption is proving false day by day. Critical resources have been let go by my employer in the hope of matching their contributions with junior/fresh engineers + AI. I have heard similar stories from friends too.

However, I am yet to hear a real life instance of a company walking back and rehiring - something that I keep reading in news.

www.fox2detroit.com/news/ford-ai-engineering-challenges-rehiring.amp (Sorry for fox link, the other one I have is paywalled)

I personally know people affected by this, they were let got and last week they got offers to fix a bunch of stuff that AI did and didn’t do

Thanks. This is one of the news articles I had in mind while writing my original comment.

Is your employer by chance hiring for junior/fresh engineers who won’t use AI, or is using AI one of the job requirements?

No. They actually have an interview round where the candidate is given access to a coding agent and a problem to solve.

Interesting. We laid off all of our junior engineers, and only kept senior people who are now expected to use AI for junior engineer tasks, then review it all and fix it all. Would be easier for me to just write it all myself rather than babysit some AI and argue with it when it fucks up.

Me showing up to work late and taking extra long breaks because they keep scheduling me over 40 hours while complaining about me doing too much overtime.

I have 7+ AI agentic agents doing work for over 30+ people. All of these workflows are designed by me. If I don’t show up to a meeting because I need a break, they can’t do anything. Because if I ever left, they are fucked.

Honestly I rather they let me hire some human employees so I can train some of them. This entire company infrastructure lives and dies by me.

Where have you been for the last three years?

Dude makes an account, waits three years to use it, and… every comment is glorifying AI.
Hmmm
