This must be for show because the government must have known for more than a few days.

Besides, China said that they cannot afford Russia to lose.

This will escalate. I don’t understand why both sides don’t escalate right now. One side must be better prepared to win now and waiting is their disadvantage.

Both sides have an interest in Russia being weak. Let it fight this war. Let it destroy the soviet stockpile of military gear. Let it empty out all reserves. Give it enough support so that it doesn’t fall before it has become totally weak. Sell stuff to plunder Russias monetary reserves. Wait until it looses its grip on its puppet regimes in Central Asia. Let it loose its grip on the puppet regimes in Europe.

China needs the Russian resources to survive a naval blockade by the US who may enforce one to remain number one.

If the West controls half of Russia or more, will China be safe?
