Not really any different than so many other countries taken over by bullies. Humans suck everywhere - it’s just a matter of when in history (or future history) you chose to look that you catch some being worse than others at that moment. Jump to another time, and the game of musical chairs will have the bullies sitting somewhere else, but still doing the same shit.
It really sucks because there are some core ideas that are really nice, completely overshadowed by the country’s terrible behavior. The things we were led to believe about ourselves in school would make for a genuinely good society. The secularism, multiculturalism, access to opportunity, many freedoms beyond reproach, etc. Our leaders have for centuries now talked about these and still mostly failed to deliver.
Well that’s on all of us, but given the outsized influence of the rich, I’m happy to shirk much of our responsibility onto them.

Buchanan barely makes the top 10 worst list. Jackson and Wilson did far more damage to the country directly. Heck most of Buchanan’s presidency was just cleaning up the infighting of Jackson’s cabinet. Top 5 worst? Three way tie between Jackson, Wilson, and Trump for first. Polk and either Nixon or Reagan round out the top 5.
Trump has killed far more than Jackson. Don’t forget COVID is literally his fault for removing early prevention people, trashing protocol, and then ignoring it for as long as possible.
