This will be an essential part of industry quite soon. It all runs on old versions of windows and having a compatible, supported runtime will be invaluable.

Might also pave a path towards governments moving off windows if it can run existing software they use.

Wine would still be better though, especially if they have the source code. Can be used like a dependency to produce a Linux compatible package like how Java applications either bundle or depend on a JVM in the package manager.

It’s good to be back in 1998 again.

I honestly would love it…

“Details on X”.

urgh, I don’t want to read anything on Twitter.

Good thing the details aren’t actually details. It’s a super short Tweet by ReactOS with celebratory screenshot and the acknowledgement that it still has bugs and crashes you wouldn’t get on actual Windows. That’s genuinely it.

Replace “x” with “xcancel” in the url, and it usually works (slightly better than the raw cesspit)

oh I get I can, I just think Twitter is horrid and I don’t even want to acknowledge it in that form lol

Wait I don’t mean to put any shade on these developers but don’t we already have Linux and wine, why would you try to copy windows?

Actually, ReactOS and Wine have historically worked together and share significant technical overlap in the goal of reimplementing the Windows API, though they have different approaches and end goals. They’re separate projects now, but a lot of work in wine happened thanks to ReactOS.

because a fucking depressing amount of computers are still running old windows versions for compatibility reasons, and it would be really nice if we could eventually replace it with something that isn’t a leaking sieve in terms of security.

why would you try to copy windows?

Because you may prove you can? I mean, this is an absolutely valid reason.

Never underestimate a dev’s willingness to do something simply for the hell of it

how does it handle Starcraft and Age of Empire 2?

I use a ReactOS vm to play Command and Conquer Red Alert. I haven’t tried the games you mentioned but they should work if they work in Wine.

That’s fantastic. Congrats to the ReactOS devs

Great, maybe in another 2 decades we can run Half-Life 2!

Shade aside, this is cool. I just remember about 20 years ago when I first got into free software that I was so excited about learning about the project just for progress to be excruciatingly slow.

That’s okay by me. In fact I prefer the utterly bloat-free Win2K-style utilitarian OS. Make the foundation solid, and let each user add their preferred bloat collections on top.

They will be ready for HL3 before it’s released then

ReactOS-0.4.15-release-1-x86.iso

Got it to install on Promxox 9.2.
PowerEdge R230 … CPU(s) 8 x Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1270 v6 @ 3.80GHz

It’s 32-bit.
It wouldn’t install until I used these settings. (only) 1cpu. (only) 2gb. IDE drive. SeaBIOS. i440fx machine.
It did boot. Failed to install device drivers. It did get online. Hehehe. Floppy disks controllers. Wine Internet Explorer.

Installed LZDoom/Freedoom using Applications Manager. It ran.

I don’t know. The OS runs. Interesting.

Peak Windows era achieved. Job done!

Seriously though, that is cool. Keep up the good work ReactOS devs.

…but can it run Doom? /S

I mean, i5-2400 and nVidia 8400gs - an overkill for a Half-Life, even Half-Life 2. But not exactly a powerful hardware that runs on a OSS windows. I say good job to devs.

It only took them 30 years! 👏

Yes but it is still very impressive in my opinion no where near close to like being something a common user would ever use but I love their dedication to it still.

ngl i thought it was dead

It was until Putin gave the creator the thumbs up.

I’d like to think that there’s a certain tipping point after which most things will fall into place and stuff will just generally work apart from the occasional bug or breakage.

I hope. Look, it feels like a pipe dream that’s not meant to happen, but I have to commend them for their tenacity and hard work. And if it does all fall into place, I’ll be happy and will celebrate with the devs that’s for sure. I’m just wondering if it will ever be in a usable state, if they’re wasting their time on something that simply will not work or work well enough. Only time will tell, but honestly, it’s starting to feel like they might pull it off.

Even if they never do, my understanding is that they have worked with developers for tools like WINE, so even if they never truly finish the project, they’ve already made some meaningful contributions just by furthering those projects.

That’s true, so it’s not in vain at all.

Yeah but when will they get DOOM running on the screens in Half Life on Windows in Linux?

But can it run Crysis?

Is this the shambling remains of lindows?

Na, Lindows was just Linux that looked like Windows (kinda). ReactOS is FOSS Windows, no Linux kernel involved. It’s an original kernel which apes Windows as closely as possible. The idea is that hopefully, some day, it’ll be a full drop-in replacement for Windows with full support for Windows software, no compatibility layer (e.g. no Wine) required.

Interesting. I applaud the efforts … though I do find myself wondering if that energy could have been focused on a more unified front for those compatibility layers instead. Backwards compatibility certainly would be useful but I feel like modern compatibility (parity) is a sisyphian task. You’d be eternally chasing a standard that a company is setting for you. The exact company with a history of file format and code changes to fuck with efforts identical to this. You’d never be able to pull ahead.

I’ll have to go read up on the project. I’m interested in the project itself - but deeply curious if they have addressed that elephant.

TBF this project started decades ago before proton and a lot of compatibility layers became mainstream.

Also, ReactOS is closely tied to helping WINE and always has been, so it’s not a complete waste. It’ll just never actually emulate Windows in any stable way.

Ive had some time to look at the timelines and that was definitely in the “era” of Microsoft making poor choices for the end user. Apparently lindows rebranded (who knew lol) and also crawled into existence around the same period.

I think, for good reason, people should be concerned with the direction of any consolidating market. I believe the devs were correct to have the foresight to anticipate this eventual reality.

Exactly what I was curious about considering the goals are similar and could benifit from shared knowledge. Very cool.

As far as the emulation layer discussion goes - I’m not so sure it will matter in the years to come. It needs to simply provide a ‘good enough’ bridge to other platforms to allow a critical mass to form. After that point those platforms can stand alone as a viable alternative and grow from there. Example: VMWare debacle.

Lindows “rebranded” because Microsoft sued them for trademark infringement. They’ve been “Linspire” since… 2004, I think?

This point comes up a lot with obscure and seemingly pointless open source projects.
It doesn’t have to be useful. Let the devs do what they like with their lives, they don’t owe anyone their free time.

No shade being thrown at the devs. Ive chased many a “what if” myself. I certainly have opinions but what someone does with their time is their business.

I wouldnt necessarily classify this project as pointless as the research has value. I simply was making observations and asking questions as an outsider looking at a project I wasnt familiar with conversationally.

People who do stuff like this often can’t redirect their focus at will. They get passionate about one specific thing and do great work for that. You try to steer them towards something more useful, they end up losing the passion completely.

First off, as others have said, Wine and ReactOS benefit each others’ development.

But second, for those folks, particularly less-tech-savvy ones, who feel like they “have to” use Windows for one reason or another, “Windows except FOSS” seems a much easier and more tempting option than “Linux but tries to be like Windows”. I do think that argument is a bit less compelling than it once was, but for sure, if ReactOS was “done” and fully compatible with Windows 11 or whatever, my mother, for instance, would be beyond thrilled to switch to that. As it is, she’s kinda sorta starting to come around to the idea of using Linux maybe at some point, but she fears the learning curve. (And I very much don’t blame her for that.)

iirc reactos research benefits wine as well

waiting for the day they migrate to nt 6.0

FOSS reimplementations of proprietary software feel like possibly the most effective way to wrest back all that companies like Microsoft have taken from everybody. (And it serves as a pretty effective “fuck you” in the process.) So it always thrills me to see such projects reach major milestones like this.

They’re unfortunately super labor-intensive. And progress on this one has been slow. But it’s good to see they still happen.

Which will come first, ReactOS being capable of running a hypothetical Half Life 3 or Half Life 3 being released?

Capability, since HL3 has been confirmed to not exist. Sad days.

Half life 3 is real

What else more do you need?

I would like to play factorio

I just want the rest of the Direct 2D draw calls implemented
