Nice, but no longer open source as of like two years ago, and the creator apparently likes to put surprises in the installer that lead to deliberate memory leaks and random evil laughter being played over your speakers. This is supposedly to punish users for interfering with the installer (which normally tries to make you install shitware), but apparently this behavior has also been triggered by normal users accidentally. I’m not running that shit on my machine, it’s about a half step away from being malware now. A real shame as I remember CE 6.3 back in the day being really nice to use.

What the fuck

I know, right? all those years of reputation, gone like that.

Yeah, I mean this sounds almost like a joke if you don’t have a source lol Bit in all seriousness, it’s sad to let someone’s ego ruin an otherwise cool project like that

Used to have a portable version.

Since the CheatEngine dev is an asshole, there’s an alternative I use instead:

https://github.com/korcankaraokcu/PINCE

Probably not exactly matching in feature parity but tbh I only use it to edit RAM values to get around MTX currencies or bad game design choices like Wreckfest locking all vehicles/parts behind a boring as sin uninspired single player grind when I only cared about multiplayer shenanigans.

PINCE is an abbreviation for “PINCE is not Cheat Engine”.

lol

If there’s one thing FOSS folks love it’s recursive acronyms 😅

pawalled, also its been scummy for a long time regardless of platform, and all the cheat makers are moving to their own private platforms that don’t even seem to work in wine

Nice! It worked fine under wine when I tried it, but having a native version is neat

Turns out that it’s only available for Patreon supporters now and that the dev stopped updating the code on the public GH repo And in addition to that, when you use the official installer it plays a creepy laughter every 10 mins

Kinda weird, virus-like behaviour

You have no fucking idea how deep that rabbit hole goes. Cheat engine has a fantastic history of being literal malware and ran by one of the biggest pieces of shit I’ve ever fucking seen.

The fact cheat engine gets used at all is great proof that people are stupid as fuck and way over trusting.

Got some reading for us on those things? I’m really curious. I never let CE connect to the internet (blocked by firewall, but I don’t recall it ever attempting to), but it’s too useful for when I want to fuck around with a game.

Ye i just gave it a go and promptly removed it again after looking at github, seeing the version there ( with no binaries ) and having the patreon popup. CE can bugger right off if what you said is true..

I mean it used to “work on Linux” before but on Wine apps only.

Been using GameConqueror in the lack thereof, since it was the best replacement I could find. Let’s see how the Cheat Engine fares in this version now.

Last I used GameConqueror, some 3 years ago, it sucked major ass. Speedhack didn’t work and, half the time, it wouldn’t find the addresses I wanted to edit.

I don’t use speedhack so can’t comment on that. But on searching other values, I guess it’s a bit finicky if not looking for basic stuff indeed.

Neat. Does it require root?

No. There is a setting that has to be set as root, but once the setting is made, it runs as user.

chmod +s, just a setting!

Pretty cool, got me wondering how cheat engine actually works with memory translation and process isolation. I read through this article which was a good overview. https://www.guardingpearsoftware.com/blog/ever-wondered-how-cheat-engine-works-extended-41008

Hopefully someone does a similar one for linux

This must be the year of the Linux desktop.

I think it’s going to be the century of the Linux desktop the way things are going with the big tech companies right now. Age verification can fuck right off and only open source is going to give you any possibility of choice in the matter, laws be damned.

Does this also consequently mean it’s the Microsoft Century of Humiliation?

The fact it requires supporting the patreon to obtain kinda sucks for people who aren’t able to afford it, like me right now.

I personally would love to have it specifically for the speedup feature since I don’t know if any of the other alternatives have anything like it.

I tried this thing called PINCE, it worked dead simple for memory editing. IIRC it now has the speedup too

That’s huge if true! Last time I looked into it, I couldn’t find anything like it. But it has been a while since I last checked. Definitely gonna take a look!

I think, they tend to publish a version that doesn’t require patreon after some time, but I may be wrong

I kinda hope so, even if that means waiting for the next major release. I legitimately have no other use for it besides the speedhack thing, so I’d be down to either wait or support it to get a copy when I can.

This is awesome I was just looking for something like this for Linux. PINCE did the job and came close but the community support around Cheat Engine is where is shines.

That’s a name I haven’t heard in a long time…

Absolutely would have moved the needle towards Linux for 12-year-old me. (Already on Linux now.)

Wouldn’t something like this piss off distros with SElinux?

No more than a debugger.
