In 1953, the BBC aired a science-fiction serial that entranced the nation of Britain. It was the first of its kind, and it was such a raging success that an enterprising movie producer quickly snapped up the rights to turn the story into a feature film. Two years later, that movie raked in money at the UK box office and, in the process, helped give an identity to one of the most iconic movie studios the British Isles has ever seen. Even more impressively, the film crossed the water to the US, becoming Britain’s most influential sci-fi film ever.

During the 2010s, a trend emerged that many dubbed ‘elevated horror’. It’s a lazy term, suggesting that all horror that came before it wasn’t artistic or explored deeper themes beyond scares and thrills. Regardless of the argument for and against ‘elevated’ horror, it is interesting to note that two of the most acclaimed movies from this period fell into the folk horror subgenre – The VVitch and Midsommar.

The thing with Midsommar is that the ending is no mystery. For eagle-eyed viewers, the fate of Florence Pugh’s character, Dani, is revealed from the very beginning. Hiding in plain sight, the ending of Ari Aster’s 2019 folk horror is on the screen repeatedly as Easter eggs throughout make it clear how the tale will end…

“It’s fair to say that, in recent times, horror movies have become some of the most popular cinematic offerings. For whatever sociological or psychological reason, the audience seems to love the experience of being scared, and the result has been that many horror films are enjoying unprecedented commercial and critical success.

Yet, the popularity of boutique Blu-Rays doesn’t seem to be waning, a sign that the interest in physical media is still going strong. The Criterion Collection is easily the biggest specialist company making Blu-Rays, having first released a series of DVDs in 1998. While England is undoubtedly the target of criticism when it comes to the many facets of its cultural offerings – say cuisine, for example – there’s no denying that the country provides some truly breathtaking natural scenery. It’s equally valid that English people possess offbeat humour and sometimes outright weirdness. In very few movies is this combination as succinctly married as in Ben Wheatley’s 2012 black comedy Sightseers.

With a mix of classic cinema and some new releases, King stated: “I am especially partial – this will not surprise you – to suspense films”.

Even though it’s regularly held up as one of the greatest comedies ever made, the brains behind Monty Python and the Holy Grail have been happy to admit they were resolutely ill-equipped and under-prepared for making a feature film.
