An effort to develop a sustainable, hydrogen-powered shipping network serving the Pearl River region was announced as China launched its largest hydrogen-powered inland cargo ship. Guangdong Yuntao Hydrogen Energy, which is developing the ship’s systems, reports it plans to launch a network of up to 100 standardized vessels, making it possible to maintain a commercially viable operation without subsidies.

Japan reports a breakthrough with the demonstration of a large hydrogen-fueled engine being developed by Japan Engine Corporation, working with Kawasaki Heavy Industries, for a demonstration project for an ocean-going vessel. It points out that most work so far with hydrogen is on smaller engines for coastal vessels, making this a major technological milestone toward the practical use of hydrogen-fueled vessels.
