I’m Canadian. I can’t go to America cause when I was a teenager I ended up in a mental hospital once, and we apparently shared that private health data with the Americans, and the border guards can and will deny you entry for “you once tried to hurt yourself 20 years ago”, it’s been in the news.
The government will always find a vendetta against people. In this case they have something to anchor to, basically a historical paper trail used to manipulate you.
MaeveIsrael already has everyone’s data, for a long time and share what they want with any of the five eyes, Europe in general. So it’s probably safe to say all Western states have each other’s citizens data, plus a few states, if expedient toward US objectives.

I just commented something along these lines on another post of the same article. It really feels like we’re entering darker times.

lievenI’m not sure how many more ways VDL et al can find to sell us out to the US - every single time and neither to our benefit nor in good faith. Even strategically and politically this seems like an exceptionally bad move.
It’s absurd how little control we have over our own data even while we have the legislation in place.
DupaCyckiThe European Comission is not the only one to blame, since it has limited power on its own. The European Council (of which VDL is also a member) is in large part responsible for delegating the Comission to fulfill various duties such as negotiations with the US, as well as instructing the Comission on the expected results.
That said, any time the European Comission is assigned to any task or receives any power from the Council - it overwhelmingly acts in the best interests of the US, not the EU.
The main problem we’re dealing with is that many EU states and institutions are filled with American assets. The system seems fine on paper, but everything goes to shit as soon as several heads of state/government are aligned with our enemies.
This is true, but VDL has pulled an enormous amount of power to herself (not to the Commission - to herself) and when it comes to these matters (the US trade ‘deal’ is another good example) she has a lot of influence even if she operates under a Council mandate. I am not sure how big her influence is in the Council, she’s a member but without voting rights.
Most of our national leaders are letting us down again and again, indeed.
I strongly believe in the ideas and ideals in the EU, I just wish our leaders did as well.
Between this and Chat Control, the EU is getting darker.
The European Commission has always been dark as fuck. It’s the parliament where things used do get cleaned up. Also we should not forget that, right now, the Council, Commission and Parliament are firmly in the hands of the political right.
Since most things are kept secret, I assume the worst, meaning that the US gains full unlimited read access to databases and can pull data as they like, including from those people who do not even want to visit the US. Therefore everyone is affected.
RiQuYUnnecesary, you need a visa/permit to travel to the UK too. I don’t see the issue in filling a shitty form and providing ID pictures when the alternative is compromising the whole privacy of a country giving them unrestricted access to biometric data and more.
Simple: stop traveling to the USA.
Are you sure that you data is only transferred to the US if you’re travelling to the US? I wouldn’t be so sure…
eickerIf the price of visa free travel is giving a foreign government access to Europeans’ biometric data, then it’s a bad deal: The EU lectures the world about privacy and digital sovereignty, yet too often folds when Washington asks for another exception!
OoopsSome people (those stupid enough to visit the US) getting at least something (visa-free access) out of it is actually an incredible good deal.
The expected EU move would be to just give away all our data without getting anything over some ridiculous pretense because our corrupt politicians got some small favors from a lobbyist.
LumidaubNo, you have to understand, if you’re a company and, for reasons, you need to send 500 people to the US every month, it’s so tedious to apply for visa. Think of the economy u guise. /s
