I didn’t get hit by the paywall when I read it. Just tried to get a paywall-free link thru the Wayback Machine, and even that DID get hit by the paywall :(

It’s not an app, it’s a protocol
It’s both. The article makes the distinction. The program (i refuse to call it an app) launched 25 years ago, which was also the first implementation of the protocol.
