Surely bloating up online environments with facsimiles and ghosts will keep actual people engaged. Just like it will with Facebook keeping your profiles and running them for you based on algorithmic engagement data after you’ve died or deleted yourself, surely no humans would be disturbed by the idea that they’re the only actual person left online. This plan to accelerate dead internet theory can’t possibly go wrong… Capital isn’t reducing the greatest human networking technology ever devised into botnets advertising to botnets at all…


Yuck. I bet you AI will be used in this production. Activision does this with AI bots in lobbies for their newer titles, due to the monolith that is Ricochet.

So basically Eve Online. A lot of your character development happens while offline. No thanks, one psychopathic playground / training grounds too many for me.

I tried to play that block chain moddable hardcore-EVE survival MMO and I found it confusing and unengaging … And that’s the most generous description I can come up with for it.

As someone that played EVE on and off starting with the beta for it I was kind of disheartened.

I used to be an EVE player for a few years, and also tried the blockchain thing during some closed tests, and you’re right.

Ngl, I have to admint the technology behind it is pretty cool, if you get past the blockchain hate, and I do think as a developer that it’s pretty interesting idea, especially the bit about modding and the idea of open source frontend (which I don’t know if they ever got to, didn’t really keep up to date with the project).

It’s a shame it didn’t work out well.




I always liked the time-based skilling in EVE. You don’t have to grind for skills. I really enjoyed that game for a few years.

If it is anything like EVE it just means that there are systems that work in real-time and operate even when you’re offline.

For example, if you tell your colonists to built a factory… it may take 36 hours but you don’t have to be online for them to work. Also, in EVE, your character’s skill progression happens if you’re online or not. Level 1 in a skill may take 2-3 minutes, and level 5 for some of the highest level skills could take weeks.

So, like Farmville.

Yeah, EVE is pretty much Farmville with spaceships and diplomacy.




as someone who has played EVE Online since launch…yup that sounds about right.

“leveling up” in EVE isn’t based on XP, it’s time based. you buy skills, had them to your skill queue, and they level up over hours, days, or even weeks. Or if you’re building something again that’s all time based. you either log off or do something else in game.

Hell due to the meta in the game and the massive player alliances there’s some alliance leaders that don’t even bother logging in. They just manage their alliance out of game. you can easily “play” EVE without actually playing EVE. so former EVE devs doing something like this shouldn’t surprise anyone.

This is very true. I spent a good year casually playing EVE and never undocking from Jita 4-4. I was basically playing spreadsheets and logistics contracts, earning more money than a person flying a ship and grinding isk. Then moved to doing carrier logistics for a large Bee-based alliance.

e: If you were into this kind of spreadsheets gameplay, look at Prosperous Universe. It’s basically EVE if they removed all of the spaceship stuff and left the trade hubs and planet/moon installations.

exactly. And your bee-based alliance former leader was the main alliance leader that never logged in. Mittani basically played EVE Offline.

I have so many memories of that game, boring 90% of the time but that other 10% was peak video gaming.

Mittens was the hardest working EVE player who never logged in. He made good propaganda though and the folks that did that kind of stuff were great for morale. The BoB director that defected and disbanded the BoB alliance did so mostly because we were having fun and BoB was super serious and toxic. A cultural victory, if you will.

Speaking of morale, Suas’ Little Bees song, sung to ‘Let it Be’: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-m-0RlqMHM was awesome. I was in the fleet TS when he demo’d the song and promised to release it if we could get a foothold into delve, which did eventually happen.

Also, RIP Vile Rat.

Anyway, I don’t know how the game is now (I haven’t played in over a decade) but it left an impression.

I’ll definitely try this new game.

Suas was awesome. one year at Fanfest he played Little Bees with a guitar at a bar. it was awesome.

Also his video of flying a Titan is still my favourite EVE video of all time. Yelling “BOOYA!” when his Titan went to warp.

I remember my first big battle.

One Friday afternoon as we started fleet operations, the subcap fleet was being aligned on a non-reinforced POS. This is normally a really bad idea considering the POS can blow subcaps out of the water in a cycle or two.

As it turns out they were staging their capital ships at a new, unarmed, POS who’s password was leaked due to a GIA agent who had an undercover Jump Freighter alt in the BoB alliance.

Just before we landed on grid the fleet commander posted the POS’s password in chat. This doesn’t let you shoot into the POS, but you could bump ships out of the POS shields by flying into them. This is (was?) even more effective against capital ships who have terrible turning radius and acceleration. We interdicted the shit out of the PoS, lit a cyno for a around 50 dreadnoughts and played bumper cars with a few Nyx while the seiged dreadnoughts chewed them up.

After about an hour, and 2 and a half Nyx later, they brought in their subcap fleet through the gate, dropped an Avatar on us, dd’d our entire subcap fleet, and then jumped in and bubbled our dreadnoughts.

We were reforming at a station 2 systems away and fleet command sent out an alert over Jabber (this was before Discord so we had an entire array of goonfleet hosted services) for cap pilots to login.

We ended up with an Erebus, another 20 dreadnoughts and some carriers and motherships for the 2nd wave. The Erebus DD’d their subcap fleet, our subcaps jumped on grid and tackled the Avatar. Our Dreadnoughts had it about halfway through armor and the motherships in the POS were logging/not coming out to try to save it.

They managed to get their subcapital fleet, 2 motherships and a few carriers back into the fight as the Avatar went into structure and by that time it was taking upwards of 10 minutes to get a lock (this was also pre-time dialation). We were chewing through their hictors so our dreads could jump out after the Avatar died…. the the node crashed.

The Avatar pilot didn’t log back in immediately so we camped that POS location for nearly 2 weeks straight. I think it got away by logging in right after maintenance and immediately getting cyno’d out.

Technically a win, isk-wise, but losing the Avatar kill hurt (it died a few weeks later in another large engagement but I wasn’t there).

I don’t think I managed to land a single attack between getting DDd and the lag but it definitely hooked me on the fleet combat side of things.

I’ve played in the Seed closed beta. It’s awful. It’s not a game that anyone should invest any time in. I would describe it as the kind of thing self-absorbed developers build because they enjoy the process of building it, not because anyone but them will enjoy using it.

It’s a lightly-interactive Sims knock-off with all of the soul stripped out, zero story or narrative creation, and instead we’ve got Baby’s First Toy Economy Systems that are so trivially exploitable that it’s ruined every play session I’ve participated in because the entire world’s resources become dominated by 3 players within the first two weeks. There’s a barely-funcional civics system where players can elect somebody national leader, and there’s a toy government of the president’s cronies who can pass policies to alter some national economy settings (tax rate, import/export priorites, etc.).

There’s almost nothing stringing any of the game’s systems together. The developers appear to have a lot of faith that the player will somehow care about the goings on of their bots. But there’s not really all that much going on. Bot-to-bot interactions are shallow and purposeless. There’s just nothing going on in the game to latch onto.

As the saying goes - Imitation is the strongest form of flattery that mediocrity can give to greatness.

I mean, that doesn’t sound fun, but actually sounds pretty realistic :(


It’ll take a lot of effort to keep the systems from being exploitable like that, I expect. And maybe so much structure will be needed that it’ll become rather un-fun.

I use to be excited about such systems and ideas in games. But I’ve come to realize that players will break and ruin anything you put in front of them.

Oh, that’s probally true. But those were a long time ago. And the users were still self selecting and in the right headspace.

We have crossed a threshold with the internet and awareness of possible places to be a shithead at these days. If you know what I mean. A certain mentality bands together to seek out how to fuck these spaces up, now.

It’s like the early days of VR. The social spaces were great until VR got cheaper and more common. Now you need to hunt out the good groups and social circles and they are hard to find.




Exploitability sounds pretty terrible as a possibility, but I will say that the devs seem aware of it and the possibility of exploitation doesn’t necessarily sink a game like this. Eve often was such an amazing experience early on precisely because the game had so many openly exploitable systems.

They mention they’re looking to attract the caregiver archetype, which I assume means they’re trying not to bring the purely competitive Eve player, so maybe a healthy starting mix will help with the exploitative feeling early on?


Tbf you played a beta. A lot can change between now and full release

It’s the curse of niche MMOs, the dream games of some people, that get shredded into disaster, because they don’t have enough players or they will mostly attract players who are clearly not the target audience.

One thing I actually disliked about GTA5 was that the game wouldn‘t exactly pick up where your last session ended. Instead, it felt like the world continued in my absence. I would save my game as Franklin in his house but the next time I boot up the game I‘m controlling Trevor waking up in a pile of garbage, feeling just as disoriented as he did. Even when it made for some surprising moments I disliked it overall.

I like the dragons dogma thing but I would like it to be with your character. like you decide if they are on the market when you log off and maybe being in a guild the guildmates can have your character in their group for free if your logged out.
