[CHALLENGE] August, 2026
submitted by
August is named after Augustus, the first Roman Emperor. This is also our first ever challenge thread as this community is new. We’re going to keep this month’s challenge theme REAL basic. The challenge is “Anti-Imperialism.” Users who want to post challenges to other users are encouraged to theme their challenges around anti-imperialism.

I’m in too flat a region, but this one would be good:
Cross The Alps
In 218 BC, Hannibal marched an army, war elephants included, over the Alps to bring the war onto Roman soil from the one direction Rome was smug enough to think it impossible. Instead of horizontal range, we will focus on the vertical: climb or descend X meters each day. If you place it at 100 a day, it would total ~3000 for the month, around the height of the Alpine passes his army used.
As a variation on this - endurance rucking, especially with irregular loads. Would be a great combo with the rec of 1 mile a day from @quill7513@anarchist.nexus! And the route I’ll be going.
oooh! i might be able to do that. joining! we’ll see how it went on the 31th
Should the challenge be posted as a comment here or in a separate post? And how specific should it be?
please post it as a comment. the time frame should be the month of august, though subdivisions of the month (such as weeks) will also be acceptable. i would recommend the challenge come in the form of a completion metric (do X by time) or a frequency metric (lift weights 12 times this month)
Would “do X every day this month” be acceptable?
yup!
The term “going the extra mile” originates from a form of military sabotage practiced by early christians in which when recruited by a Roman Legionaire to carry their equipment, they would carry the equipment 1 mile too far. For the month of August I am challenging myself, and anyone who chooses to join, to run 1 mile every day for the month of August, totaling at least 31 miles this month.
For anyone wanting to participate who uses non-imperial units, such as the meter, the metric mile by olympic standards is 1500 meters, however, an imperial mile is closer to 1600 meters. Participates using the metric system or scientific units this month are encouraged to use whichever standard feels most comfortable and realistic for them. Your totals will, depending on the preference, be 46.5 kilometers or 49.6 kilometers.
Can you give an example please?
Here’s the challenge I created as another comment on this thread
I’m going to be creating a challenge every month after posting the top level [CHALLENGE] thread so that there’s always at least one thing for people to get involved with
