Sure but you moved the goalpost from ‘’they weren’t allowed’’ to “they aren’t being honest”. There’s people in this thread who are in the repos, so we can find that out without assuming.
Also, at least their model is opensource and can easily be selfhosted on consumer hardware. Helps with your datacenter point from earlier. Like if this project does what it says its supposed to do, it’s genuinely interesting. If they are pushing the boundaries of permissive licensing then yeah that is really concerning.
So they scrapped stuff that wasn’t permissive? Interesting… though not really surprising.
Their claim was they followed the licenses and only used code they were implicitly allowed to use. I’d like to see if that was just astroturf and bullshit.
Honestly, though this is one of the reasons why people prefer copyleft and avoid permissive licenses, because yeah anyone can profit monetarily off your work otherwise.
I do not believe a permissive license has any notion of consent. You can’t stop someone from forking your code as long as they follow the rules of the license, like crediting you.
Even in GPL, you can’t stop someone from using your code, see Gnome’s recent arguements with Mint over their usage of an old version of their Calender app.
Others in the thread have mentioned we’ll see permissive licenses with exceptions for Ai in the near future. It’s a solution because that door is currently open.
But if it’s permissively licenced, couldn’t I just copy bits and pieces for my own project without asking?
Like I understand asking is always better and an opt in process for “the stack” or wtv would have been better received. Nevertheless, did they really have a legal obligation, rather than moral obligation, to ask given how this is licensed?
Taking GPL code would be a different situation right? They would have to also include it in their model creation… which theoretically they just could.
In theory, it’s all supposed to be permissively licenced code and the opt out is more than other models give. I saw Starcoder as one of the more ethical models. I thought the underlying principals to be fair at least.
I’m interested in this gut hostility to it regardless. Kind of shows how you can’t present LLMs in a positive angle no matter what. They shouldn’t be using anything GPL or similar.
Not sure if you got your answer yet, but Windows 11 should be off the table. I don’t believe your CPU supports it at all. Therefore you get Windows 10, which is off security updates. If you must use your laptop and Linux is off the table, run Windows 10 (or even 7) offline.
Keeping it off the internet and just for your resource intensive tasks is your best bet.
Otherwise, install Linux on it to use it as a remote desktop and rent a VPS to run your stuff on it. It’ll run whatever latest distro you want and your laptop will stay cool as the VPS will do all the computing. That subscription can be very cheap, free even with some providers.
Don’t run windows 10 online. Same advice for outdated MacOS versions.
A pro trick for optimizing Windows is to look at all your startup tasks and prevent ANYTHING from booting when you reboot your system that isnt strictly necessary. Running it offline will also let you purge a ton of processes and applications that take up RAM idling in cache.

SelfhostedDo you really need 64gb though? Do you want a PCIe in a low wattage, low air circulation mini PC? Are you running a docker swarm of VMs within the same system? Why?

You won’t get Local LLMs if the PSU is minuscule. Best get a big old workstation with good cooling. Fried motherboards overloading them with local LLMs. That stuff is mean on hardware.
16gb is still fine for most people.

I remember getting free games with Gold back on the 360 and One. Eventually they became unplayable without the subscription. Kinda enshitified.
There’s just something about your progression being tied to a subscription that makes you want to invest less in the game.
There’s some kind of threshold of # of subscriptions and $ of subscription people are willing to be tolerant of.
Like most people were ok with Netflix/Prime when they were the only two in town and it cost like $20-$25 for both.
Now there’s how many different streaming services? You don’t even have an easy way to know which provider has what anymore either.
Microsoft currently sells 4 different passes… and I have no idea whatsoever which gives me what… And the prices range from $14 to $25 CAD, which is the upper limit of what people want to pay in total subscription cost alone.
People get games with Netflix and Prime on top of their existing subscription and I’m sure most people don’t play or even know about them. lol
I’m actually really surprised this didn’t work. They had acquired such a large amount of quality studios, IPs and a huge back catalogue. They had enough money to keep the subscription low indefinitely. Getting added to the Game Pass was a huge deal for indie devs at one point, but I think those who did were disapointed with returns.
Granted the article says they dropped 300 million on Jedi Survivor and Suicide Squad… which gets to the point of how unsustainable subscription models are. It’s like a smaller version of the Ai market. Just like how you can’t break even on 300 million selling a $10 a month subscription, you can’t break even on $30 billion investments with the same $10 subscription.
Still, how could you possibly mess this up. lol
The only requirement of the BSD license is you credit the code somewhere in a disclosure. That’s pretty much it.

Cynically though… they’ve been peddling nothing for two decades now. Big data, the cloud, SAAS, web 3.0, metaverse, nfts, llms, there’s always a new nothing born.
Most of the ‘’smart money’’ is just in it for the short term. Get all the value possible out of their position and be the first out. The bagholders will be the same wallets with legs, us, who hold all that shit in our pension funds, IRAs and whatever.
We are very much in a post sustainability mindset when it comes to the investment market. Enshitification is just scrapping the bottom of the barrel to keep the numbers good for another quarter.
Selfhosting Gitlab takes a bazillion RAMs lol. I think I got it up to 12gb idling without doing anything.
I’d say the ongoing thread is more the declining use of desktops/laptops in general in favour of phones or tablets. Cloudflare’s tools doesn’t allow us to compare between either.
MacOS is fine. Wouldn’t be as maligned if it existed in a vacuum outside the Apple business model.
Its like buying a Thinkpad new… its crazy for that price, but otherwise everything is excellent. Paying $500 for a once $5000 Thinkpad will change your opinion on the sticker shock.

I played it when standalone came out. I enjoyed the feeling it gave you of walking out alone in the woods, orienting yourself on landmarks and stuff. Mostly avoided players and did my thing though lol
Yeah, that’s the neat part about servers, they don’t necessarily need to be snappy. Most of what it does is background work and it doesn’t have anything else to do. DDR3 and DDR4 get the job done just as well, and save you a buck.
My NAS has 16gb of ddr3 ecc, it has 10tb of ZFS pools and it runs an embedded OS. No problems with that. Not going to use it to host Gitlab lol, but it gets the job done for what it has to do.
Farming equipment is a particularly annoying one, that and construction vehicles, are becoming increasingly locked down by proprietary software and impossible to maintain yourself. You can’t even employ mechanics outside the dealer network in some instances and it will be more so in the future.

I always wondered how much impact that has on interactions. It’s like road rage, people in cars are just way more aggressive than someone you meet on foot or even on a bike. You’ll never see people argue irl like they do online… but I still wonder how to avoid that overall and keep things positive?
Yeah, questions are always less confrontational. It’s also a good equalizer, especially if you show you aren’t scared to appear foolish. Puts people at ease I think. Gives them the space to explain their thinking rather than defend themselves.
