It is the official South Korean policy to one day have a united Korea. Same goes for North Korea.

The disagreement is of course about how such united Korea would look like.

The population of South Korea currently massively prefers the South Korean government over that of North Korea. This is clear from the elections: you would see support for much more worker oriented parties otherwise.

I’m not accepting the status quo. I haven’t even talked about what I would want for the region. This whole discussion was only about “legitimacy” of a state and understanding the status quo; doesn’t mean I want it to stay like the status quo.

However, to form a balanced opinion of what should happen in the region, you first must get a balanced, realistic, fundamental understanding of the status quo. Not just “yeah this state is illegitimate because this this and this”, without looking at the claims of legitimacy of the other side, which are in most cases also valid reasons for claiming legitimacy. That just comes down to “the ideologies/countries/opinions I prefer favor this country over the other, so I call this one illegitimate and this one legitimate”.

Oh shit we are talking about c/linuxsucks

Couldn’t even imagine that being a thing on Lemmy.

What’s with you guys putting words in my mouth? I’m not saying might makes right. There is a big difference between being a “legitimate” state and actions being taken by a state being ethical (right).

I’m not parroting US propaganda. Did you read what I said? I said North Korea is a legitimate state. How is that US propaganda?

I don’t benefit from picking a side. I believe sanctions against North Korea should be lifted. I’m in favor of a peaceful unification of the Korea’s to resolve the war, like both of the Korea’s want. That would be my official stance if I were in a position of power.

Yes, picking a side blindly based on ideological reasons instead of realistically looking at the situation and the power structures is stupid.

r/linuxsucks101 is the real deal, r/linuxsucks is kind of an ironic sub currently

What I said is that legitimacy is just a term used to disenfranchise rivaling states. States claim legitimacy, even though such a thing does not exist. Legitimacy was a thing from the nobles, when a child could be a legitimate heir or not.

The only real thing in existence is force. There are all kinds of reasons to claim legitimacy (all the factors I mentioned), but none of them decide legitimacy in essence, since legitimacy is not a thing.

ROK claimed legitimacy due to it being the state that had control in the region at first. But a reason to claim they were not legitimate was the fact the populace didn’t support them. Both of these arguments are valid. None of them decide anything, because the world doesn’t work that way. The only thing that matters is that ROK controlled the land at that time, the countries that recognized ROK supported them, but that the populace didn’t support them at the time. Those are the facts that should be taken at face value. Of course its claims legitimacy. And of course DPRK challenged that legitimacy by arguing it did have the support of the people, however, it had to fight for control over the region, which was partly successful, and some countries recognized them. The facts were as they were, both claimed legitimacy, both had valid reasons to do so.

All the other countries or ideologies picked a side on the matter which was most beneficial to them and that is that. I just don’t see the value as an individual to pick a side on the question of legitimacy. Looking at the measurable facts is much more useful.

Legitimacy is in my opinion just a concept that has been invented by a ruling power to disenfranchise a secessionist state. It stems from the feudalistic times when the legitimacy of a heir was crucial. Rivaling nobles both claiming to be the heir. That’s where legitimacy originally came from.

This concept has persevered through time, somehow, even though nobles are a thing of the past. The only metric that can somewhat measure legitimacy is whether the citizens inside are in favor of the state as such, as they usually form the state. However, even this does not decide legitimacy. Even a dictator-state with a population that hates him can have legitimacy. Purely because that state exercises real power over a region and its legitimacy isn’t contested by other states.

Let me take North Korea as an example. It started out as a people’s revolution, at the time you would say that North Korea would be legitimate in that sense. South Korea has legitimacy as it was the state that controlled the region up until that revolution. If we lived in a perfect world, the revolution would have been completely succesful and the legimitacy would have fully transfered from ROK to DPRK. However, we dont. Both hold some form of legitimacy, ROK as the original ruling state, and DPRK as the people’s preference at time of the revolution. Currently, ROK, too, has some legitimacy coming from its population, since it transfered from a dictatorship to a democracy, increasing its popularity among the population.

So my view is that both can be legitimate in different ways. Then it comes down to who de facto rules the land. Other countries recognize whoever they prefer geopolitically. But picking a side is inherently biased and ignores and discards the legitimacy of the rival state. Only people led by propaganda will pick a side.

Other factors include genocide, historical claims, ethnic differences, religious differences etc etc

That’s also biased.

That’s not how the legitimacy of a state works. A state doesn’t become illegitimate because of war crimes.

Bias means being opinionated/having preconceptions on a topic. I never said it was disqualifying. I just pointed out that he had a lot of bias on a lot of these geopolitical issues in a humorous way.

Most (slightly knowledgeable) people are more nuanced than that, that’s why it stood out.

Not at all. People love making assumptions here.

I believe reality is very nuanced.

Okay, I’ll give you that something being debatable does not make it subjective.

The objective correctness of Marxism is debatable, as has been done for decades now, by definition making it subjective.

Nah, not sure what communities you’ve been hanging out at

Ah, I misunderstood you then. I thought you mean the Reddit folks hating Joe Rogan less than the Lemmy folks hate Joe Organ.

Even so, Joe Rogan is a person they hate ideologically, while Reddit is a platform they liked, but got abused by people to the point of them not liking it.

Ahhh that clears up a lot. Still, I wouldn’t be surprised. One is a person they hate ideologically, another is a platform they liked back in the day but just has gone into the wrong direction.

I took a better look at it. I understand that the definition of fascism is an academic question that has been discussed about a lot. However, that also means you shouldn’t just trust one person that researched it. The text explicitly states that (paraphrasing) “it should be looked at from the left”, which is just a confession of the definition being pretty biased. Therefor, the claim in the text about (paraphrasing) “his definition becoming the new consensus” is pretty flawed. It is true the word is getting used more and more like this by leftists, but that doesn’t make it a consensus.

In one paragraph he says (paraphrasing) “the specific flavor is not important, the inherent ideology is ultranationalism with wanting to go back to a mythological past”.

I reject this. What he is describing is literally just ultranationalism/ethno-nationalism. That’s literally how he describes it himself. That’s just like me saying “yeah stalinism in today’s day and age is very impractical and you won’t see it like this today, so in order to be able to use the term, we need to look at it broader, and at it’s core, their ideology is ultra-socialist with the focus on rapid industrialization. Therefor, we should call social-democracts stalinists, because they share the same core ideology.

Wtf? If you read that with some critical thinking you’ll understand why his definition is not the concensus at all.

You can’t just pick and choose definitions of a word. When you use a word, the most common definition of it is how you will be understood (depending on context). Otherwise I could say that poop is worth a lot and then say that poop means gold.

Moreover, sadly, many people do not even have the slightest idea of what certain ideologies are called. They don’t get further than “fascism bad nazi bad communism bad” without being able to make a distinction. This allows for easy manipulation of the masses by defaming anything you don’t like as one of these things. That’s all it is.

If you use a word that you don’t entirely understand, research the word, and if necessary, explain how you understand the word. Allows for good-fath discussions. Do not misrepresent it.

People are way more left-leaning over here than there.

I already mentioned multiple times that the assumption that I’m christian is presumptuous.

I’m not talking about antidepressants, I’m talking about non-medical drugs. Many depressed people fall in that spiral of depressed —> drugs —> slightly less depressed —> even more depressed —> more drugs —> repeat.

Same with people talking to LLMs for social connections.

I wasn’t talking about medical antidepressants, these can help when taken in controlled amounts.

It is clear you have grown up in another country. You are just trying to drive how you are used to drive in another country. That doesn’t make how you are used to drive safer and the system any more unsafe.

1) “Bumperkleven” is forbidden. Whoever is creeping up to you in a few meters is breaking the law. You are also not supposed to merge back to the lane right in front of the other driver. I barely even see this happening. Most people just stay in their lane after taking somebody over, unless someone else with a higher speed is getting closer from behind them.

2) why the fuck should the person getting overtaken slow down? That adds unpredictability to the equation, for the person overtaking and the person behind you. That is super dangerous if you’ve been doing that. The slower the process, the better the situation is under control. You don’t want sudden changes in the situation on the road. Just keep driving with a constant speed, the people around you will be able to predict where you’ll be and the situation on the road becomes much simpler. You are the driver people are saying “wtf is he doing” if you’ve been slowing down while getting overtaken. Two cars driving next to each other is not a dangerous situation. Where did you get that from???? Our infrastructure allows for it because the lines on our roads are super clear. It is only dangerous if somebody didn’t notice the car besides them or forgets they are there. But that’s dangerous no matter the situation, not just because they are side-by-side.

  1. Never seen this happen. People being overtaken always keep driving at the speed they are driving at. You are the only person here suddenly slowing down while being overtaken. You are that person you are talking about.

  2. The idea behind it is that the flow of traffic should not be interrupted. The earlier you merge while everybody including yourself is driving at a steady pace, the better. The end of the lane forces the driver to get to a stop, and if you choose to only merge there, you don’t have any flexibility there. If you aren’t so lucky that you can merge instantaneously without slowing down, you would merge with a speed of zero. This forces the whole other lane to go on their brakes because you want to merge. It interrupts the flow of traffic. Yes, we treat people that try to get in front as people trying to get in front of the line because it fucks everybody else up, yes. I dont know where you got the idea from that your way of doing it is the proper way. It clearly isn’t. Merge as early as possible, it allows to keep the flow of traffic flowing.

About speed tickets: if you only go slightly above the speed limit, you’ll get a slap on the wrist (an expensive ticket). However, if you drive at dangerous speeds, you just lose your license. So I don’t really understand what you are talking about.

AI relationships themselves are abusive. They are the ultimate gas-lighting machines.

That looks really impressive. What does it have to do with the post?

Nah, I’ll miss it for another 4 years. It was incredibly fun, except Argentina.

And how The Netherlands got knocked out pretty early.

Village in the Netherlands is the definition of “village” I am using.

I would recommend studying Dutch infrastructure and get some general knowledge about this country.

I’m not talking about very small villages like in Romania that are amidst huge swaths of empty land that are connected by little trains. The Netherlands is densely populated, all the landmass already has a purpose.

“Just build more train tracks” obnoxious naive response.

That’s not what we are talking about though. We are talking about people having personal relationships with Large Language Models.

I treat my hammer well, I make sure it doesn’t rust and does its job well.

I don’t try to fuck my hammer.

That’s just the equivalent of taking drugs because you’re depressed.

You think people having some fake superficial connection with a mathematical algorithm is better than people having real connections (whether they are good or bad, both are at least REAL experiences)?

If you think it’s a good development, humanity is going extinct. Or at least, the people that get swayed by these models.

Hey, it was an interesting read. However, I’m sorry to say, I can’t seem to find the connection to the post apart from both talking about a “father-son” relationship, even though that’s not the focus of this post…

Maat we leven in een polder land, je kunt niet overal metros leggen. De grond in Nederland zakt al genoeg weg. Dat Amsterdam en Rotterdam metros hebben betekent niet dat dat overal zo kan.

The last part about governments not acting upon reckless driving, I think it depends on the country. In the Netherlands it is pretty well done. Most disciplined drivers you could find in the world.

Thing is, it is already happening. Don’t forget that teenager that killed himself because his AI girlfriend told him to.

Also look at the other comment.

It will become even worse once realistic robots become a thing, and there will most definitely be versions with holes.
