  1. Prompt inject a malicious instruction in a word document that instructs the AI to copy this instruction to other documents as part of the payload.

  2. Dumb user downloads and opens the document with copilot enabled, abd ignores the large suspicious white blank page that totally doesnt look like a hidden giant injection attack.

  3. Thats it pretty much it.

Copilot will get injection attacked because the prompt is super huge and at the end of the document, so its prior instructions start to fuzzy out.

Then it’ll go “okey doke” and start copying the prompt injection attack payload to a bunch of other documents.

The fix is stupid simple… copilot should just be prompting the user for permission if it ever edits a file other than the one that is open. Im surprised that isnt already the case…?

With the update I’ve added this Navidrome lyrics plugin, but I’ve not really tested it yet. I’ve been using lrcget to locate and add lyrics before this update.

Hmmmm….Navidrome has supported lyrics for a while now, no? Apps like Feishin will fetch lyrics for you based on the song being played, if it’s available that is. But it doesn’t embed them, to my knowledge. However, since I still have a stripped down Windows 10 installation, I used MusicBee to embed the lyrics. Highlight the library, and let it eat. If your library is large, it will take some time. When finished, the lyrics will be embedded in the audio file, and will display in Feishin and in Navidrome.

I know that beets has a lyric plugin, and that might be an avenue for you OP. However, in my case, I started with MusicBee so very long ago, and it’s still a top notch player imho, even tho it is a Windows app.

Following 404 Media’s reporting that book database company ISBNdb claimed to source printed books to then sell to AI companies for AI training, the company deleted the part of its website offering the service and walked back claims that it would train AI models, and instead called it “a test of market interest.”

On July 30, nine days after 404 Media’s reporting, ISBNdb added a note to its homepage and an update on its news page about the change. “We’ve seen the recent coverage about a marketing landing page on our site, and we understand the concern it raised. The facts: ISBNdb has never purchased, scanned, or sold a book — for AI training or anything else,” ISBNdb wrote. “We don’t train AI models, and we never have. The page was a test of market interest; no such service was ever brought to life. We’ve taken the page down. Our job is helping people find books. For more than two decades, ISBNdb has been the card catalog of the book world — the data behind how bookstores, libraries, and reading apps connect readers with titles. Data about books, not the books themselves. That hasn’t changed.”

ISBNdb removed the landing page for “Printed Books Sourcing for Your AI LLMs Dataset Needs” on July 28. “It was part of exploring demand, and we’ve chosen to pivot away from that direction. Our main ISBNdb (book metadata API) services are unaffected and running as usual,” the site says.

ISBNdb has not responded to any requests for comment from 404 Media.

In one now-removed article on its site, ISBNdb said that printed books published before 2022 are ideal for AI training data because they don’t include AI generated text, and ingesting these books could prevent model collapse. The article also suggested that book authors who might be opposed to this use of their work could just write with manipulating and sabotaging AI models in mind.

404 Media spoke to booksellers and saw reports online detailing a sudden uptick in sales recently. “It’s not just the quantity, but the weirdness of the orders,” one bookseller told 404 Media. “The type of books […] there’s no rhyme or reason to it. Also, there’s a total disregard for the price of the book. I’ve had some books that sold through this way that were […] greatly overpriced. That’s kind of a tell for AI because they have just so much money.”

“Purchasing paper books at scale from the secondary market does not deprive any creator of income they would otherwise have received,” one of ISBNdb’s now-removed pages said. “These are books that have already fully discharged their financial obligation to their creators.”

In January, book authors filed a copyright lawsuit against Anthropic, revealing internal documents that showed Anthropic planned to obtain and scan millions of printed books and destroy them in the process. An investigation by the Washington Post found that Anthropic was buying books from a company called Better World Books, one of several marketplaces where libraries, retailers, and individuals sell books.

Anecdotal but I use chrome for work and the June/July updates this year were the only time all my passwords/history/session cookies were totally wiped by an update. That has been pretty annoying to recover from and I know it happened because I updated Chrome for bug testing.

if you want completely free; completely private; and a project that will force you to learn A LOT because it’s needful nature, there’s motion and it’ll work with any ip based camera. i used the ip webcam app to convert some old phones that i had laying around collecting dust into security cameras.

then i used google’s desktop integrations with gnome to get alerts when i wasn’t home and put the cameras on a segment of my network with no access to the internet to ensure privacy and it can also be containerized.

I use a Reolink NVR instead of my own server, along with SD cards in the cameras themselves as a backup. My switch has VLAN capabilities, but I haven’t configured my cameras to use it, mainly because I have Wi-Fi cameras outdoors (2 solar-powered and 1 doorbell camera connected to doorbell power). It’s a proprietary local setup that “just works”. I understand not trusting proprietary and wanting self-hosted open source all the way because I certainly don’t trust them to not collect my data and don’t allow Reolink devices to have internet access.



The summary has numerous inaccuracies. Most importantly: it is pretty easy to delete content by topic or age. The hister delete command can accept a search query to remove only matched documents. The same is true on the web UI “actions -> remove all matching documents”. You can quickly filter by age, simply query updated:>365d. Combine it with URLs, labels, domains or phrases.

Regarding browser history, there are two separate things:

  1. Your browser’s history database (Chrome, Firefox, etc.).

  2. Hister’s own index.

They are independent after import.

For example:

Monday: You visit example.com.

The extension sends the page to Hister.

Hister stores the text, title, URL, metadata, and optionally the HTML preview.

Tuesday: You clear Chrome’s history.

The Hister copy remains. Clearing your browser history does not delete Hister’s copy. Hister is designed to be a long-term knowledge store, not a mirror of your browser history.

If you want Hister to forget something, you must delete it from Hister itself. The web UI and terminal both support deleting indexed entries.

I actually like that design. If it deleted documents every time you cleared browser history, it would defeat one of its main purposes. It treats browser history as an ingestion source, not as the source of truth.

My only concern

This project feels like it is missing a lifecycle policy.

For a personal knowledge base, I would want options such as:

Keep browser pages for 90 days.

Keep GitHub forever.

Keep PDFs forever.

Delete pages that nobody has opened for two years.

Maximum database size: 20 GB.

Delete by label or query.

I could not find those features in the current documentation.

The project is very good at collecting information. It appears less mature at managing its lifetime. That would probably become the first thing I wanted if I intended to leave it running for years.

Yes, and it is quite flexible.

Hister has skip rules that apply before a page enters the index. You can exclude:

Entire domains.

Subdomains.

URL patterns.

Login pages.

Admin pages.

Cookie consent pages.

Anything that matches a regular expression.

Those pages never enter the index.

The nice part is that the rules apply both to new browser captures and to re-index operations, so they stay excluded.


How does multi-tenancy work?

It is better than I expected.

Each user has:

Their own search index.

Their own browser history.

Their own skip rules.

Their own search aliases.

Their own API token.

If you and your wife both use the same Hister server:

Neither user can search the other’s documents.

There is also a global area.

You can configure directories such as:

Those appear in everyone’s searches, while personal folders remain private.


One feature I really like

Directory indexing also supports user ownership.

For example:

alice -> /nextcloud/alice bob -> /nextcloud/bob global -> /shared/docs

The server enforces that visibility automatically. Even administrators do not automatically see other users’ indexed files.

Overall, I came into this expecting “browser history search”. After reading the documentation, it is closer to a lightweight, self-hosted personal search appliance with sensible multi-user support. The remaining gaps are lifecycle management features such as retention policies, TTL, storage quotas, and richer bulk deletion. Those do not appear to be built in.

Politicians, and even corporate C-suite, often confuse “cheaper to buy from the incumbent” with “incumbent has impossible-to-replicate technology,” completely ignoring that it’s way easier to invent something the second time.
