So, this is the end of the Journaling January event for 2026.

There is this thing that many people have problems doing: having a vision for themselves. They don’t want to think about five or ten years when they are struggling to make it through today. And it makes sense. But, there is something to be said for having a vision of where you want to be, even if that is just “not in my current situation.”

Are you the kind of person that likes to have alone time? Personally, I am the kind of person that really needs alone time. I cannot handle too much social activity, unless it’s in small groups.

Who are people you admire? Are they alive? The fact they are no longer alive would be one issue for me, another would be the likely language barrier. The person I am thinking of was German. As far as I am aware, they didn’t speak English. At least not to a level that an English interview would be possible. (I’ve read a fair amount about them, and read interviews - and all of them were translated.)

Collectors know all about this one - but in a bad way. You always want to get something that is special: a limited edition playing card, an album that was misprinted, that first edition book that there are only a hundred known copies of.

There are people that you come across in your life that you really appreciate. Some people have the power to leave an indelible mark on you and deserve to be remembered.

There have been places that I used to go to that don’t exist anymore. A coffee shop I used to go to everyday shutdown years ago. One of the schools I went to was torn down.

Numerology is an ancient mystical belief in the connection between numbers and events. While it is not a widely practiced belief system in modern times, many people still feel they have an association with a particular number.

Back on day twelve we used random words from news or social media for writing, and on day twenty it was suggested to use a random article from Wikipedia. Today is the next leg of the current events based aspect of journaling: choosing a news story that makes you upset.

Think back to a time when you were in a conflict. Was it something silly or stupid? Was it something that you thought was lifer altering in some manner?

So, we all experience traumas. But not all of them are serious. Some of them just cause a little embarrassment.

Loss is one of the things that we all have to deal with in life, either personally, or through someone else’s loss. This is one of those things that journaling is really great at helping with.

There are a ton of decisions that we make every day. But do we know what those decisions will lead to? Not likely, and yet our lives can be looked at as the sum of all the small decisions that we have made. This is the prompt that allows you to explore those small decisions, maybe see if your life is currently where it is because of some small decision you made way back when you were a child.

I will admit it here and now: the images used in these prompts were a mistake. Someone recently commented on these posts and said I should make some changes to them. So, I made changes to them - even thought I hate to admit to my own mistakes. ;)

I have the feeling that the title of this prompt would appear to be obvious since the words are in the prompt… But, in reality, it’s a reference to the song Sunrise, Sunset from Fiddler on the Roof. That’s just the way my mind works at times.

Life is full of lessons. I don’t think you stop learning just because you left school, or you left the workplace. Personally, I think we should make it our lives objectives to learn something every day. This prompt is about one of those lessons.

At some points I tried to pair these prompts. Some of them were to be complimentary, some of them to just bring together a theme.

This may seem like one of the worst prompts that I have posted so far. And, hopefully they don’t get any worse (honestly, I don’t recall, I put all these together over a month ago).

Here’s a prompt you can use whenever you are stuck for something to write about. There’s a similar idea coming up later involving another truly random way to get an idea for something to write about.

Okay, so this title is actually a reference to a song. It was something really obscure that I couldn’t remember for a moment, but when I searched for it, I found it. But the weirdest part: the song doesn’t have the lyric in it.

Some of the greatest inventions in the world have started from obscure ideas their inventors have had. What is yours?

Dreams, they are a fertile ground for exploration of your mind. But, it’s also a place that needs a lot of caution. Dream interpretation can be fraught with dangers that are best done with the help of a professional. This is a warning.

“Let’s talk about the weather.”

Love is one of those topics that can be either mature and deeply personal, or it can be immature and childish like. Looking at a subject like unrequited love can help us to understand some things about ourselves more. Maybe help us become the person that we need to be in order to give and receive love in a healthy manner.

Time for the reward from the stress of the last prompt. This time we’re looking at success, or at least we’re looking at how you define success for yourself. And, this may actually be one of the things that causes you stress – so it seemed like a perfect follow on prompt.

This is a topic that is perfect for dealing with in journals. The concept of stress is one of those things most of us deal with, anywhere from the daily work stress to something out of the ordinary.

Today let’s take a closer look at the flip side of yesterday’s topic. I think it’s a good idea to balance the things that we write about in our journals. One day might be about people that we need to keep at arm’s length, and the next about the people that we don’t have any limits on.

Weekends can be an interesting conundrum for people. While some of us are totally homebodies that have no problem setting limits, some of us are more actively engaged. This is the first time that you might have to think about how to go about integrating journal-writing into your weekend activities.

I hope things went well yesterday. Heading into this new year with a (hopefully) long weekend will give you some time to work on getting used to writing daily (if you aren’t already). But more to the point, just getting to the point of sitting down and figuring out what to write is a major part of journaling.

On this first day of 2026 we start a new adventure. One that will hopefully be rewarding, even if you do struggle from time to time.
