BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — Serbia ‘s populist President Aleksandar Vucic said Saturday he will resign his post within weeks, paving the way for early elections following youth-led protests that shook his tight grip on power.

I’m happy to see that the mass protest lead to him announcing his position. I sincerely hope that what comes next is better and can steer the complex issues in Serbia to a better future.
He is probably stepping down now to make it harder for the opposition parties to coordinate their efforts before an early election. From everything I read they were making lots of progress forming a strong pro-EU block but still face some challenges and not all parties that would be needed were fully on board yet.
Let’s hope they work better under pressure and get their campaign coordinated.
The Serbs have been protesting continuously since 2024. Mostly young people pushing against corruption. Wish young people in other countries would be as proactive and put pressure on their governments just like the Serbs did.
