I have to admit that nearly 90% of the wikipedia finds that I post here are just me grabbing the wikipedia article related to watching a few minutes of the British telly chat show QI with Sandi and/or Stephen

FYI if you like the wikipedia community try QI shows yt. they are a hoot


I’m almost 100% sure this was a way for the clergy to act as anonymous judges in ambiguous cases. If they thought you were guilty… “here, try some of this bread we poisoned – I mean blessed! – for you.”

I mean they already have you eating flesh and drinking blood so it tracks


the deciding factor was whether they choked on it so you wouldn’t even need poison, just 3 day old baguette

also imagine getting accused of something and made to do this trial but you just randomly swallow wrong because you’re a human and there’s like a 5% chance of that happening every time you eat anyway



This sounds ridiculous but remember how strong the faith of these people was. It may have worked quite well due to the placebo/nocebo effect.
