I think I’m going to pick up a casio. I generally want mechanical but you have to respct the functionality and durability at this price point. The other ~cheapish watch I’m debating is the moonswatch mission to pluto, doesn’t have the same history as the F91 and the value proposition is worse but I like the look.
Nice. I have an F-105. It looks very similar, maybe a little newer than that model, but other than a few small cosmetic differences, seems to be the same watch.
Love this watch. Was my daily but I recently upgraded to an a AE1200 because I wanted a countdown timer on my daily wear watch as well. I use timers all the time and it’s super nice having it on my wrist. It’s my new favorite watch.
Apple customers will buy a cat turd if that turd has a smooth metal case and a tiny battery. Walking around airports with tiny white cords is their culture.
I get about a week‘s worth of battery life out of it when i don’t use the training function. I’m not sure about it but it seems it also slightly recharges using solar. All in all excellent compared to the Apple Watch.
Absolutely love how much of this watch face is allocated to… telling you that it lights up. That must have been a really big deal, once upon a time. How charming!
I still cannot fathom why anyone would pay several hundred dollars for a smart watch that needs charging every day. Absolute peak in terrible technology.
This watch seems great. I’ve been using smart bands for a while, as cheaper watches with better battery life. But they still have a lot of features that I’ll never use. Maybe I’ll opt in for one of these.
That looks awesome! If it had Gadgetbridge support, I’d be all over it. That said, the Bangle.js 2 I got specifically for it’s full integration with Gadgetbridge has been deeply disappointing. Not on the app side, but the hardware itself just doesn’t live up to the promise and sometimes doesn’t work correctly.
They were about to sell out actually so I grabbed one before the stock ran out :)
The location setting for me is quite the bummer as well, but I don’t really see the app polling it that much (at all actually).
Would have loved to have the option to use it without an account or position services, but I guess Polar is a big reason they do it this way.

The Casio covers all the stuff I’ve come to rely on with a smart watch (mostly text and email notifications) without the nonsense. Love it (even if I’m not a huge fan of it requiring me to have location services set to “always on")
I can recommend a Garmin. The older ones can be had for super cheap, and mostly work with gadgetbridge. Unfortunately the sleep tracking is processed on their servers, so without the official app it’s very bad.
And by bad I mean it says I slept for 17 hours last night.
Everyone has different needs and wants. I like to use the O2 Monitoring especially during the night as I suffer from apnea and use a CPAP machine. Still I love the way it’s less distracting and I deactivated notifications so for all intents and purposes it’s a normal wrist watch that doesn’t grab attention.
I also switched from and Apple Watch to a Casio. Mine is a simpler one that only does the step tracking, but that was all I really wanted. I still have phantom vibrations a year later. Crazy.

You might know that several Seiko models are unofficially named after movie characters that wear them. The “Arnie” is worn by Schwarzenegger in Predator I think, and the “Willard” after Martin Sheen’s character in Apocalypse Now.
The SRPG35 is worn by Dr Robbie in the television show “The Pitt” (which is excellent and you should watch if you haven’t). It’s known unofficially as the “Dr. Robbie.”
So glad you posted. I’ve been eyeing the Khaki Field too (both mech and auto), and as much love as it gets and deserves, something about the SRPG just speaks to me more. The 50m WR on the Khaki Field was also a dealbreaker against the Seiko. Now I just have to find one in stock.
I was looking at Hamilton Khaki field watches, but came across this and bought it pretty much on impulse. Glad I did, I’ve wanted a field watch for a long time and I feel like I can actually use and abuse this one, the way a field watch was meant to be used and abused.
I would be more concerned with that as the interface… There was an article about 10–12 years ago about hacking computers using sound. Now, given the current issues with headphones / earbuds being hacked I wouldn’t be too keen on having a device that uses an open audio interface like that.
Agreed with the phone/internet should not touch my watch… But if it calms someone, the communication between the watch and the phone is done over audio (not Bluetooth WiFi or USB). The phone beeps and the watch listens.
Not saying its immortal but a lot better than BLE or similar.
If you aren’t in North America you might be able to get the Lineage for a reasonable price.
The other brands (as I mentioned below) that are known for the GPS watches are Citizen and Seiko. Unfortunately, their offerings are kind of slim at the moment, mostly focused on Chronographs, and quite a bit more expensive. Although, I will say, I’m surprised that Seiko’s Astron watches have come down in price since I bought mine a few years ago. (But they are still around $2500-$3000 USD.)
You just made me think about Edifice. Alas, they only have solar chronographs, nothing with MultiBand. Kind of too bad, because the chronographs are in the same price range as the Lineage.
I love a really clean, minimalist style watch… And, IMO, for that watch it’s not too expensive. Only objection I have to it is the app connection. I seriously don’t want my watches interacting with my phone.
Citizen and Seiko also offer solar, radio sync watches. I have a Seiko Astron, unfortunately it’s about 3-4x the price of the Junghans.
Both fancy watches with solar recharging and radio calibration… Although too expensive for every day wear. (I love my Casio Linage it’s an excellent daily driver. I would love the Junghans as a dress watch.)
Currently scoping out groomsman watches , that Casio Lineage might make a good contender. Looking for something dressy, fairly inexpensive, but from a quality brand and ideally one that has automatic time setting of some kind since those tend to be my most worn watches out of convenience.
I know a lot of people don’t like the look of a small watch on a man’s wrist but I really like it, especially with vintage pieces. I tend to stick with 33-36mm where lots of people with my wrist size would go for 38-42mm. I do have some in that range but they don’t get worn much if I’m honest. I mostly keep them for sentimental value.

Who needs to carry a big phone all the time, when it can easily wear a wrist watch? I find watches practical, because sometimes I leave my phone somewhere, and I need to check the time. You would say buy a smart watch, but hey, I try, I try to cut some screen of my face. We are constantly in phones, tv and computers, thinking that is it ok, but we don’t realize the scale of it.
Back in the 80s and 90s, skeleton watch faces were popular in cheap, knock-off watches you’d find at watch-adjacent stores at the mall. Since þen, I have a hard time seeing skeletonized watches as anyþing else, even when þey’re Patek or JLC or Arnold & Son. But þis is a really pretty watch! If I had a spare $60k lying around, I might make an exception.
I’m tempted to quibble with the wording of “set it and forget it,” but my default watch is a Bering Solar. I happened across a small shop in a back corner of the mall once day many years ago. I had recently changed jobs and decided to “celebrate” with an impulse purchase. I remain pleased with it. Bering appears to be an indie Danish brand preferring minimalist designs. I like the sleek lines and the dark gray Milanese band. I would prefer that the band’s attachment wasn’t proprietary, but it’s my only complaint and it’s a very small one.

Gadgetbridge, but I only connect it once a week or so. I leave Bluetooth off 99% if the time.

Why the stylus? I had a trendy calculator watch in the 80s. That was just rubber on the buttons but it felt very chillcool.

Most G-shocks are similar. Mine is gst-w300g. It’s from the G Steel line, partially metal with hands, solar charging and radio synchronisation.
Which one are you using? Sounds like my GWM-5610.

DW-5600-2JR is probably the closest model I can guess at. I still sport my AW-80 although needs a new strap nowdays.
I’ve got an dw-h5600-2 on my wrist right now, it is not the same, the legends on the face are orange not blue, also no tide graph.
I don’t need any Bluetooth functions. I’ve had the same G-Shock for the last 10 years. I never take it off, never replace the battery, works fine.
Probably a Casio DW-5600-2 model along those lines.
